Participatory Culture is a culture that everyone inside the society can talk, share and control the media. People with loud voice and much money have the equal opportunity of joining in the culture with people with nothing. This is an ideal situation. In the article, Aaron Alan Delwiche and Dr. Jennifer Jacobs Henderson express their idea on Participatory culture. They think that people should join the culture and join in efficiently. People can not bully on minority or hurt others. On the other side, it is more harmful not to join the culture. I think they are right to a large extent. However, participatory culture is an ideal situation to a large extent. People can not achieve equality on the social media

We are now in a world with new media, such as Facebook, Twitter and so on. These tool spread knowledge and information. They help people to work more efficiently. However, on the other side. There are also some false information on the internet. Some people may deliberately post some information to hurt others. It will hurt people. So, we must teach people how to protect themselves from all those dangers. This is media literary. The article emphasizes on how to create such a literacy. Only with this literary, people can control the social media. As a result, they can create a participatory culture.

a huge citizen science project in the USA, formalizing the sharing of the traditional (and ancient) practice of Phenology. Phenology is an important way to be connected to the natural world around you--basically observation of seasonal changes. People have been collecting observations for all of human history--this project seeks to help standardize recording of the data so that it can be shared en mass, creating huge and flexible data sets for many different current and future scientific experiments. "Nature's Notebook is a national, online program where amateur and professional naturalists regularly record observations of plants and animals to generate long-term data sets used for scientific discovery and decision-making."

Descubre, Fundación Andaluza para la divulgación de la Innovación y el Conocimiento I would like to introduce the Spanish Fundación Descubre (http://fundaciondescubre.es/) and, inside it, the network called "Divulga red" (http://divulgared.es/), thought to connect people (professional and amateur researchers and citizens in general), communicate and collaborate among them. DivulgaRed let people reveal research topics and the value of the science in different fields, sharing ideas with other researchers and group of people, all with the basis of a collaborative work. I had the pleasure of giving two talks in high-schools telling about optical communications and novelties that people can have in a near future. In a very good atmosphere, students and their own teachers asked me questions and I can enjoy a very nice atmosphere making my knowledge in this topic public. Even more, teachers in the high school were later discussing with me about possibilities in Education, and both they and me built some experiments to be made by students in the high school during the semester. So, as a concluding remark, every body who wants to share a new idea, or to obtain a new point of view, or simply who wants to introduce or simply to learn about a new topic is welcome in Fundación Descubre and DivulgaRed project. Interesting lecture on citizen science given at UBC. Professor Jennifer Preece gives several interesting examples of recent citizen science projects, and the research being done on citizen science. She also presents some of the roles computer scientists and librarians can have in citizen science projects.

Two competing views on the future of publishing, and how shifts in consumer behavior to purchasing or consuming electronic content is causing such a shift in the literary world. I found it interesting to read that a number of open source software platforms were identified as the harbingers of today's self-publishing model online. I never knew Wattpad existed - watt an awesome site (pun intended). I agree with the articles viewpoint about the role that public libraries can play in this shifting landscape. A good read.

Unfortunately, the webinar itself is not free, but the slides are here. In particular, Mark Coker of Smashwords provides a good overview of the trends and future for self-publishing.

I found this article trying to learn more about 3D printing and museums after seeing a recent headline on the topic. This article reminded me a lot of what was discussed in the module on participatory culture. Visiting a museum is a fairly "closed" experience in most museums the visitors are separated from the objects on display (for obvious reasons), it is interesting to see museums "open" in this very limited context, giving people ways to interact with certain museum objects in more ways than just the standard way one would in a visit to a museum.

This is my favorite article and it shows that old fashion publisher represent a barrier for knowledge flow, and they were misusing it. "Introduction:There is concern within democratic societies that a growing number of individuals are disconnecting from their role as citizens (Merritt and McCombs 2004: 47, Turner, G., 2005: 135, Dyrenfurth, N., 2005). Much of the blame for this disengagement has fallen upon the gatekeeping practices of journalism (Schechter, D., 2005: 70). These practices are often held to be counterproductive to journalism's primary purpose, which is to create an inclusive and diverse space for conversation between members of society about issues affecting their lives. Gatekeeping practices have the capacity to create gaps and silences, giving voice only to those already holding power. They give media corporations, politicians and large lobby groups the capacity to set the agenda on their terms and in their own best interests (Schechter, D., 2005: 70). "

Useful resources for Citizen Scientists who wish to publish, so sharing valuable data which otherwise may have been lost. Of course, caution should be taken to ensure that all data recorded is done scientifically and is reliable.

In an age of proliferating media and news sources, who has the power to define reality? When the dominant media declared the existence of WMDs in Iraq, did that make it a fact? Today, the "Social Web" (sometimes known as Web 2.0, groupware, or the participatory web)--epitomized by blogs, viral videos, and YouTube--creates new pathways for truths to emerge and makes possible new tactics for media activism.

This video did a great job of illustrating the shift from critical media consumption to more participatory culture. We are no longer just consumers, we are now producers, curators and publishers. We must develop critical digital literacy skills in order to creatively express ourselves online.

Many of the articles I have read through the course and videos that I have watched are showing big gab. We are living in places that most of the knowledge we are receiving in this course is new or not implemented at wide level. But one thing that you can be sure about in our papers, it is morally driven.
