The power of citizen journalism | The Rapidian - 3 views

  •
It explores why people-powered media matters and why we need them
  •
Very good article. He makes good point about journalism being a stronger tool as more people participate.
  •
Yes. Very good point about journalism being stronger as more people participate. But, an inherent part of citizen journalism is the consumer's ability to sift through what is news and what is opinion. Who checks the facts with "citizen journalists"?

New media literacies - 3 views

  •
Cool short video describing skills we need to be part of the participatory culture.
  •
This video did a great job of illustrating the shift from critical media consumption to more participatory culture. We are no longer just consumers, we are now producers, curators and publishers. We must develop critical digital literacy skills in order to creatively express ourselves online.

Interesting lecture on citizen science given at UBC. Professor Jennifer Preece gives several interesting examples of recent citizen science projects, and the research being done on citizen science. She also presents some of the roles computer scientists and librarians can have in citizen science projects.

The rise of citizen journalism | Media | The Guardian - 1 views

  •
With the development of technology, more and more people can join the media and become reporters. However, the rise of citizen journalism also has revolutionary effect on different kinds of careers, such as publishers and other aspects of news and sociey.
  •
Dated from 2012 but an interesting read that really puts the importance and significance of citizen journalism into perspective
  •
Citizen journalism is especially powerful when it disagrees with the popular paradigm of the mass media platforms. This article specifically talks about occupy, Syria, and other movements where the media was not necessarily on the side of the protesters. This is particularly powerful because it disinter mediates the mass media and shows a balanced perspective - something that history prior to the internet lacked all too often. Citizen Journalism, although often biased and unfiltered, gives a raw perspective on events which helps people form more informed opinions.

We are now in a world with new media, such as Facebook, Twitter and so on. These tool spread knowledge and information. They help people to work more efficiently. However, on the other side. There are also some false information on the internet. Some people may deliberately post some information to hurt others. It will hurt people. So, we must teach people how to protect themselves from all those dangers. This is media literary. The article emphasizes on how to create such a literacy. Only with this literary, people can control the social media. As a result, they can create a participatory culture.

Scanner tags, comic book piracy and participatory culture - 0 views

  •
This essay takes a look at comic book scanners and why they do what they do -- namely, risking legal repercussions for the violation of IP laws without monetary reward. It's an interesting look at the participatory culture aspect of fandoms in the digital age.
  •
Chirospasm22 thank you for posting, I had never heard of comic book piracy until now!

Journalism, citizens and blogging - 0 views

This is my favorite article and it shows that old fashion publisher represent a barrier for knowledge flow, and they were misusing it.
"Introduction:There is concern within democratic societies that a growing number of
individuals are disconnecting from their role as citizens (Merritt and
    McCombs 2004: 47, Turner, G., 2005: 135, Dyrenfurth, N., 2005). Much of
the blame for this disengagement has fallen upon the gatekeeping practices of
journalism (Schechter, D., 2005: 70). These practices are often held to be
counterproductive to journalism's primary purpose, which is to create an
inclusive and diverse space for conversation between members of society
about issues affecting their lives. Gatekeeping practices have the capacity to
create gaps and silences, giving voice only to those already holding power.
They give media corporations, politicians and large lobby groups the capacity
to set the agenda on their terms and in their own best interests (Schechter, D.,
    2005: 70). "

African Citizen Journalists' Ethics and the Emerging Networked Public Sphere - 0 views

Many of the articles I have read through the course and videos that I have watched are showing big gab. We are living in places that most of the knowledge we are receiving in this course is new or not implemented at wide level. But one thing that you can be sure about in our papers, it is morally driven.

Digital Media and Democracy - 1 views

  •
In an age of proliferating media and news sources, who has the power to define reality? When the dominant media declared the existence of WMDs in Iraq, did that make it a fact? Today, the "Social Web" (sometimes known as Web 2.0, groupware, or the participatory web)--epitomized by blogs, viral videos, and YouTube--creates new pathways for truths to emerge and makes possible new tactics for media activism.

Please Feel the Museum: The Emergence of 3D Printing and Scanning - 0 views

  •
I found this article trying to learn more about 3D printing and museums after seeing a recent headline on the topic.

This article reminded me a lot of what was discussed in the module on participatory culture. Visiting a museum is a fairly "closed" experience in most museums the visitors are separated from the objects on display (for obvious reasons), it is interesting to see museums "open" in this very limited context, giving people ways to interact with certain museum objects in more ways than just the standard way one would in a visit to a museum.

DIGCOMP: A Framework for Developing and Understanding Digital Competence in Europe - 1 views

  •
In week 3 we've addressed how open knowledge can promote active citizenship. A pre-requisite for that is that individuals are equipped with the right set of digital skills. Being digital native does not necessarily imply that one is digital competent.
The promotion of digital skills is at least as important as ensuring accessibility to technology.

This document is a reference framework to identify what are the different elements of digital skills as these go much beyond than merely knowing how to use a computer. This has been developed by the European Commission, engaging several different stakeholders from several countries, and is being used as a support to strategies for the promotion of digital skills.
