What Does Your Brain Like Better: Paper or Ebooks? - 6 views

  •
This is an interesting post. Thank you for your sharing. As mentioned in this post, new research shows that electronic readers promoted more deep reading and less active learning. However, from my own experience, I feel like electronic reading leads to less deep reading but more active leaning. For me, I will never choose to read electronically if I have the physical version of the book because reading from digital devices, such as e-readers, tablets and smartphones, make me feel it's not like reading, it's more like looking through some online content or some one else blog posts. When read electronic books, it easy for me to skip around, and lose focus, attention or patience. I always need to read a second time for fully understanding a paragraph, when I read electronically. Also, with out the convenient of highlighting and making notes, reading electronic books prevent me from better understanding the content and thinking deeply. However, reading electronically, especially reading online might promote active learning because in some online reading website or softwares, there's interactive section on the side where readers of the book or article post their own opinions or form a discussion. This promote people to read, think and learn actively and collaboratively.

For the topic of whether you like physical book or ebooks, we have discussed a lot during our class discussion. And the result is, all people prefer physical book other than ebook, the main reason that people said for their choices is the same one, the reading speed could be much faster when they are reading with ebook because they are scanning the texts in the device, however, by this way, they don't remember much about what they just read and have to read again and again in order to understand what the content is talking about. Reading with physical book make them feel more comfortable that they can take some notes in the margin of the book and they all like the texture of physical book.

"electronic readers promoted more deep reading and less active learning" Some of my observations. I believe the future is for electronic reading only.
  •
For me, maybe I am old school, it depends on the mood. I am wired towards both the print and electronic books. I cannot wait to have a printed book in my hand this Christmas holiday. The smell of the new selection of books and the paging through is a wonderful experience.

AL GORE, TEDTALKS AND THE FUTURE OF PUBLISHING - 2 views

I have used the term mind-blowing in 30 years or so but this is truly mind blowing. The link is to one of the talks at April's TED conference last month. (Follow the like for an explanation of the conferences.) This one is truly inspirational - and for those of you in publishing - you may know of it already (2011)...a true ebook.

Un esfuerzo encomiable, para plantarle cara a Google, cosa que soepecho que todos sabemos, no es asunto fácil. Robert Darnton, uno de los prmotores del proyecto, publicó varios textos que ubican el contexto general del proyecto. Uno esA World Digital Library Is Coming True!, en http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2014/may/22/world-digital-library-coming-true/, donde concluye: "It would be naive, however, to imagine a future free from the vested interests that have blocked the flow of information in the past. The lobbies at work in Washington also operate in Brussels, and a newly elected European Parliament will soon have to deal with the same issues that remain to be resolved in the US Congress. Commercialization and democratization operate on a global scale, and a great deal of access must be opened before the World Wide Web can accommodate a worldwide library."

This website is an open source of information on a book resources. This is great, easy to download thru pdfiles. As technology spreads all throughout the world, the way we communicate to others and also the way we find an information has changed just like e-books or e-learning process.

i love open library, although the digitized books often have issues, the pdf formats are not great. many entries are not so great either. However, the important part of Openlibrary that no one has mentioned yet, is the lending model for digitized modern books. they have digitized books that are still in copyright, but do not have ebook editions and are usually not being reprinted. they lend one digital copy for one physical copy held in storage. they idea is to use the traditional rights of buyers provide under copyright rather than the contract law licensing of most ebooks.

Very good and will be helpful to all

Another independent bookstore shutting down: Oscar's Art Books will close - 0 views

  •
Oscar's Art Books, an independent bookstore that has been operating for 24 years in Vancouver is shutting down. Chain bookstores were once thought to be the biggest threat to small, independent bookstores, but it appears the rise of e-books, not Chapters or Indigo is behind the demise of Oscar's Art Books. Appparently this is not the first bookstore to close the down due to people preferring e-books. What started this? Local bookstores are already competing with chain bookstores, but now, they have new threats that they have to face. If more and more people are turning to e-books, there may be possibility that printed will become a rare thing. There has been a lot of debates of printed vs. ebooks, by the looks of it, e-book is winning.

Adobe is Spying on Users, Collecting Data on Their eBook Libraries - The Digital Reader - 7 views

Adobe has just given us a graphic demonstration of how not to handle security and privacy issues. That anonymous acquaintance was examining Adobe's DRm for educational purposes when they noticed that Digital Editions 4, the newest version of ...

Why? For what purpose? Sorry I am clueless. But any spying could have serious consequences.

Privacy doesn't exist anymore. And yes it does have serious consequences. Any rouge agent can take all the information about you and do whatever they want with it because no one is watching the watchers.

Linux Command Line By William Shotts (free ebook, website) - 0 views

  •
Are you a new linux user? (and why not give a linux a try! There are many great, stable, simple to use distributions out there now! And you can try many of them out with out even installing via live cd) The GUI is great, but to "unlock the POWER" it is great to learn about a few more advanced commands. I don't bother memorizing the command, but you will be amazed at the things you can easily figure out how to do with Linux, making your computing life easier and more powerful... The website is very helpful, and the book version is free and CC.
  •
I LOVE linux. I have let my brain turn to iOS mush in recent years, but since it's open source, I was able to google --er search via duck duck go-- fixes for a wifi connection issue and that shellshock thingie. And in far less time than it ever took to fix a Microsoft or WIndows issue. There are guys you can find online who will ship you a machine pre-loaded with Linux or Ubuntu or Debian, if you can't or don't want to bother with wiping and doing it yourself. If an easily distracted and slightly airheaded person like me can handle it, imagine how a more 'normal' person can do! Great post. Thanks for sharing. In fact, all your shares are interesting.

Smashwords: Indie Author Manifesto - 0 views

  •
"Where once self publishing was viewed as the option of last resort - the option for failed writers and an option marked by stigma and shame - self publishing is increasingly viewed as the option of first choice for many writers. Over the next couple years I think we'll reach a point where more first-time writers aspire to indie-publish than traditionally publish. "

Bruce Willis versus Apple: do we own what we download? - Telegraph Blogs - 1 views

  •
This is an interesting article that scotches the surface of what happens when digital rights meet physical deceives. Who owns the songs on our iPhones? What about eBooks? Can these be passed down? An interesting discussion follows in the comments - and even though Bruce Willis' name has been erroneously attached, the subject is still worth examining.
