  • On my computer, I had the zip file that contained all of the PDFs for each file pulled up so that as I was going through them with the whole group, if I wanted them to be able to see something better, I could show them the PDF version instead of the  tiny cards I was holding for some of the centers.

  • This is a really fun practice game for upper elementary and middle school! I also love this game for older beginners because it is an easy way to take those easy ta and titi rhythms and really make a more challenging game.

      We used to do a game like this for theatre. I would love to use this as a beginning of the year activity for assessment, or a way to practice certain parts for a concert.
  • This could be done as an ostinato pattern that is repeated, or you could rotate through a set of cards for the students to play.

      I like the idea of using cue cards with simple rhythmic ostinatos to accompany a cd track. You could introduce the ostinatos before the activity and practice by switching between cards. Once the kids feel comfortable, play the song and use the cue cards.
  • Use rhythm flashcards to create a song that the students know well. Have the students clap and read the rhythms and see if they can figure out the mystery song.

  • Music has existed in some form since the Prehistoric times, and the first likely use of music was a call used to communicate to other members of a family unit or group either for entertainment, spiritual purposes (for example, rain dance chants) or for survival in hunting or gathering situations.(6) Notably, the role of the shaman or healer has been well documented(7) and can be considered analogous to the role of the music therapist today.
  • Whilst bias and exaggeration is possible in music therapy trials (as with all research), overall music therapy costs less than a drug trial - which often need millions of pounds in support.(32) In addition, drug trials are more likely to be implicated in pharmacological corruption(33), with consequences for patients by virtue of skewing or altering results - as seen with the understatement of the negative effects of Agent Orange, a carcinogenic (cancer-causing) herbicide used in the Vietnam war, by Monsanto.(34)

    Musictheory.net is a free online music theory resource. There are lessons on: The basics, rhythm and meter, scales and key signatures, intervals, chords and chord progressions. These same lessons, as well as fretboard and ear training exercises, can be translated into exercises and also assignments that can be turned in and verified by a code checker. Beyond that there is also a set of tools that includes note, interval, scale and chord analysis calculators as well as a staff paper template and tempo tapper.     This website provides theory lessons ranging from beginner to advance. The lessons cover a wide range of material including: note names, note/rest values, accidentals, intervals, scale patterns and other music terminology. There are also exercises that can be completed by students. The exercises consist of various note name and ear training problems. Every exercise can be customized by the user to be at the beginner level or more advanced level. The website also keeps record of the user's score within as each exercise is completed.

    Musictheory.net is a great resource, not just specifically for music theory students, but for all students of music. The "lessons" section is great for introducing new concepts of theory, and the "exercises" section is a fun way to quiz and practice these concepts. The site contains lessons and exercises regarding notes, intervals, triads and 7th chords, scales, key signatures, guitar tablature, and other subjects. I have found it to be very useful for extra practice for my AP Music Theory students.

    Like many similar resources, this site offers both free and paid-for options. It functions in the could, so there is no need to download anything to a computer, though these is an mobile app available too. The site offers both lessons and exercises. The lessons take students through basic music theory concepts while the exercises practice these concepts. The exercises are completely customizable as can be sent to students as customized.

    Musictheory.net is a great resource to use if you have a student who is taking private instrumental lessons with you. I use it with my students who are beginning piano to practice reading notes on the staff. I can set the range of the staff on their iPad or computer in advance and ask them to practice reading notes on the treble or bass clef. This resource is great for creating independent musicians.

    Some of these music games don't seem very educational to me, but I think that they offer a variety of musical style games which could be interested for my 5th graders. I think that the zen musical composition games aren't too "babyish" (as my students would say) for the 5th grade students. However, it's something I would need to explore more.

    This site's purpose is to allow younger children opportunity to interact with music through games and listening. I explored Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, which I think would be perfect for my three year old. She can click using the arrows or mouse to create different sounds, and even explore different moods of music (happy, sad etc). The site also features other genres of music which is great to expose students to from an early age.

    This is a free, web-based, cloud-based notation software program. Users can create, view, print, hear and share scores. This program is similar to Sibelius and Finale, but has the advantage of being web-based. It is MIDI and iOS compatible. Users can participate in a community of sharing scores. Noteflight is free, but Premium features require a monthly subscription. Educators can purchase a "Learn" subscription which allows students to have their own accounts that are managed by one (or several) teachers.

    This is a document that is a resource for creativity and technology for music learning put together by Dr. William Bauer for the FETC in Orlando, Florida on January 31, 2014. Other headings include: technology to facilitate musical creativity and general cloud-based technologies useful for facilitating musical creativity. This page is an excellent resource to develop ideas for learning with technology in the classroom. Many of the programs are free, easy to use and applicable to many educational ideas.

    Musical Creativity in the Cloud is a Google Doc by Dr. William I. Bauer. It is a list of resources to integrate technology into the music classroom and encourage creative thinking. Each item on the list will facilitate organization, creativity, or music learning. Dr. Bauer comprised a list of fifty resources to integrate technology into the music classroom including notation software, cloud-based libraries, media players, and organizational tools.

    Toby W. Rush provides fifty PDFs for public use on his website "Music Theory for Musicians and Normal People." He not only invites people to print the PDFs but encourages teachers to make copies and use these resources in the classroom. There are worksheets on everything from simple meter to minor scales and counterpoint. He breaks the worksheets into topics: fundamentals, diatonic harmony, development and form, chromatic harmony, and counterpoint. This a great page to keep in mind for any age group or music classroom.

    Great website for band programs with limited instrumentation or for small chamber groups with nontraditional instrumentation.  Each band piece can be played as a solo or the full work.  The sheet music provides every instrument with the melody and the part for the band version.  New titles are added frequently!

    This site has a lot of powerpoints to download for instruction. Many of them are for song lyrics that could be displayed on a smartboard or TV. There are also some games and other resources. This would be great to use in the classroom instead of printing out song sheets or handing out old textbooks.

Specific Musical Content: This webpage contains the chord progressions of over 5,000 songs. The original song can be played as well as just the chord progression on a piano. Each song can be transposed into different keys and modes while preserving sonic relationships. Theory Tab also can display the chords being played on a piano keyboard or a Guitar Fretboard. The site includes recordings for use in interval identification, rhythmic dictation, chord identification, and a variety of other ear training concepts. This would be an excellent resource for teachers who wish to provide their students with practical experience in ear training via technology. Students could practice at home or in a computer lab.

    This is an excellent resource. I studied my music theory classes with Rodriguez-Alvira, the author of this program. Wonderful resource and music theory professor.
