    This free downloadable version of Finale NotePad is great for basic composition projects. The software boasts its "Human Playback" feature which is designed to demonstrate expressive musical nuances, giving it a more realistic sound rather than being merely computer generated. NotePad has excellent sound quality and includes over 128 built-in instrument voices.

    A free download for basic music notation. You have the ability to make simple scores and compose exercises or any music really for several different instruments. A great introduction into the full Finale product and an easy tool for students to use on simple composition projects.

    One of the original titles of music notation software. Finale was first available in the late 1980's and has been in constant development ever since. The software is available in 3 service levels: Finale, Printmusic, and Notepad. Notepad is a free version and only offers limited features. The full version of Finale has full capability to produce professional-looking scores and is also capable of exporting audio and MIDI files. Finale also comes bundled with Garritan Aria player VST and a decent-sounding instrument pack. Finale also features educational worksheets and templates which are very useful for teachers.

    This site is something that most music educators today are familiar with; Finale. it provides a free download of Finale as well as blogs and training tutorials about how to use the program. The purpose of Finale is to all teachers (and students!) to create their own music. It can be anything from an original composition to an arrangement of a familiar song to a replica of something that has already been created. Not only does finale help build musical creativity, but it also teaches students about the basics of music notation. This site is a great source because it takes you step-by-step through downloading Finale, making it more user-friendly, especially for those that might not have as much experience with more recent music software.

  • I think it is commonly understood that it's important to do your research on the district/school/job for which you're applying before you go into the interview at all. The question time at the end is where your preparation, or lack thereof, can become most apparent! You don't want to ask a question that can easily be answered through an internet search.

  • This is a great opportunity to showcase your knowledge about different teaching methodologies (like Orff, Kodaly, MLT etc) even if the interviewers don't know what you're asking!

      Certainly helps with curriculum planning. Are you allowed to bring a notepad in the interview room to write down questions/answers?

    Flat is a full-featured online music notation tool. The product has commercial and educational versions. The educational version has teacher administrative controls and allows an educator to integrate Flat into common learning management services including Google Classroom and Canvas. Students and teachers can collaborate on the same notation projects, and have the ability to integrate and link to external content (e.g. YouTube). Flat also has a plugin for Google Documents which allows users to create and embed short selections of music notation into their work.

    This website is a music writing software that can be used online as well as offline. The layout of the program is simple to navigate and grasp. Students can easily learn how to arrange or create compositions here. Collaboration on projects is simple. Projects can be shared with one another. There is also a feature in which a teacher can leave written notes within the scores themselves.

    FLAT is essentially Google's attempt at notation software. Thus, it is extremely intuitive. Though more limited than other programs, it essentially does everything a student composer would need. Students can sign up for an account with a Gmail address and can easily share their scores with each other and their teacher.

    Music notation softwares like Finale and Sibelius are quite costly for students to purchase and use. Flat.io is a free online music notation software that allows you to notate music online, and share it with your friends in the cloud. It is collaborative in a way that people get to comment on your music, and you also get to comment on other people's compositions. All you need is to sign up with either google, facebook, or with your email address. It is a good resource for teachers to set notation assignments, and while students do the assignments, they learn many concepts in music such as tempo, speed, dynamics, phrasing, structure, to mention but a few.
