The options for voicing and parts in very broad which makes the amount of music available vast. When searching composers, it is best to know specifics as some composers share similar surnames.

    This website is suitable for teachers who give students free time to work on music games. Many different music topics are taught by the music teachers and a better way for students to retain the information would include turning some of their assignments into competition. One thing i have learned, elementary students love to be competitive, so if the students are able to get high scores on music games, then they are retaining and getting the information.

  • Although it exists in the larger context of music practice in general, the concept of deliberate practice requires sustained concentration and effort and is therefore somewhat distinct from unstructured activities engaged in for the sake of playing for fun.
  • Deliberate practice encompasses effortful, goal-directed, and intentionally structured activities.
  • When taken together, the findings suggest that those who took a more strategic approach toward practicing (e.g., breaking parts down and putting them back into context, identifying difficult spots) also achieved the highest performance scores.

  • Although several lines of research (e.g., deliberate practice, mental practice, modeling, self-regulation) have begun to show links between general practicing approaches and achievement, relatively little is known about which specific behaviors are most effective in eliciting performance gains. Information regarding which behaviors are beneficial to school-age musicians is especially needed, given their often limited formal training and the scarcity of studies with this population. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships among observed practice behaviors, self-reported practice habits, and the performance achievement of high school wind players.
  • In general, the results of this study have shown that the quality of practicing that takes place may be more crucial to improvement than the quantity of time spent playing.
  • The results also have practical implications for music educators. Although the findings cannot be considered causal, the correlations between performance achievement and the behaviors repeat section, slowing, whole-part-whole, and skipping directly to or just before critical musical sections of the étude indicate that these may be particularly useful strategies for making improvement.
  • It may be that those who were more accustomed to practicing with specific musical or technical goals in mind were able to practice more effectively during the study
  • This suggests that teachers should guide students toward practicing with musical and/or technical goals in mind.
  • This could be done by assigning specific musical passages to students or by asking students to practice applying specific musical concepts (dynamic contrasts, vibrato, expressive tempo manipulation, etc.) to various pieces when working alone.
  • This suggests students may need to be trained to distinguish between efficient and inefficient practicing.
  • For example, teachers could demonstrate characteristics of inefficient practicing, such as repetition of errors and physical and/or mental fatigue, and warn students to guard against them. Conversely, teachers could also highlight characteristics of efficient practice, such as focusing on problematic passages and taking appropriate amounts of rest.

    This 100 Years of Rock link contains a chronological display of how popular music has evolved.  It provides listening examples for dozens of American genres of music, from rock to country, blues, pop, and countless other sub-genres.  This link would make for interesting conversation with a History of Rock N' Roll class or classes about American music.  I especially enjoyed the listening examples because they give evidence to how much culture has influenced the different styles of American popular music.  I feel that students would very much enjoy this link because the listening examples cater to their interests, especially as the viewer scrolls toward the bottom of the page.

Resources include worksheets for pitch, rhythm, composers, specific songs, like the Star Spangled Banner and so much more. A valuable resource for a teacher who does not want to "recreate the wheel" OR who is creative and likes to "recreate the wheel" and earn a little cash doing it!

    This is a great resource for any educators. Teachers pay teachers is an online website where teacher share and sell their creative ideas for other teachers to use in their classrooms. You can purchase materials, lessons plans, assessments, and pretty much anything for a lesson plan you are using, or in need of. You are also able to upload and sell your creative ideas to collaborate with your colleagues. This is a useful tool if you find yourself in a jam for a lesson or in need of supplemental materials.

    Teachers Pay Teachers is a resource for a wide variety of teacher-created lesson plans. Teacher-authors can share their lesson plans and resources via digital download, and receive payment in return. The search function allows teachers to find materials related to a particular subject and view the ratings from other users. Music teachers need to use careful keywords and search tactics to weed out lessons aimed at incorporating songs in the general classroom, but there are many great music education plans about music elements, instruments, guided listening, etc., as well as rubrics and visual aids.

    Teachers pay teachers is a website that allows educators to purchase curriculum and resources from other educators. There is a wide variety of resources available on the website for every age group and subject area. I find this website to be incredibly helpful when I am looking to use technology in my teaching. Many teachers upload their lessons including links and videos, which allows students to see and hear many great examples of music.

    Teachers pay teachers is basically the amazon for any educator to find lesson plans, games, manipulatives, and much more. I love to check out teachers pay teachers when I need new ideas on teaching music and generally I look for music games. I actually have a store on TPT, but hardly upload anything because I stay busy. I believe my most popular buy is my music jenga game, if any UFME students want it I would be more than happy to send it your way, for free!

    Teachers Pay Teachers contains music lessons, interactive media, and administrative aids developed by music educators around the world. While many of the resources are for purchase the cost is minimal and there are many available for free. The musical content ranges from specific learning objectives (like steady beat for elementary classrooms) to entire curricular supplements using specific teaching methods (such as Kodaly). While there are resources for performing ensembles, most tend to be for elementary or beginning performing ensemble classes.

    Teachers Pay Teachers a website where you can look up different resources for your classroom from sub plans, posters, to fun activities to play with your students. When teaching a specific concept in music class such a dynamics, this resource will have vocabulary with pictures, power-points, and activities to play with students in order to reinforce the concept. It is a great website that eliminates the time component of creating these documents on your own time, while also supporting others teachers with inexpensive prices for their products.

    Some of these music games don't seem very educational to me, but I think that they offer a variety of musical style games which could be interested for my 5th graders. I think that the zen musical composition games aren't too "babyish" (as my students would say) for the 5th grade students. However, it's something I would need to explore more.

    This site's purpose is to allow younger children opportunity to interact with music through games and listening. I explored Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, which I think would be perfect for my three year old. She can click using the arrows or mouse to create different sounds, and even explore different moods of music (happy, sad etc). The site also features other genres of music which is great to expose students to from an early age.

    The Music Education Blogs link contains links to blogs for all sorts of music educators.  The links are catered to specific school settings, teaching methodologies, ensembles, and free online services.  I enjoyed exploring several of the blogs because blogging is something I've just become acquainted to within my graduate studies with the University of Florida's Online Master of Music.  For example, I clicked on the "Elementary Blogs" tab to see what some of my elementary music educator colleagues have to say/share.  A handful of links to other teachers' blogs and websites were made available at a click of the mouse.  I clicked on the first link, "Mrs. Miracle's Music Room," and was able to read posts from "Mrs. Miracle" about her teaching strategies for classroom management when utilizing technology.  Her blog contained other features like a personal bio and links.  My blog for this course doesn't contain those things, and perhaps exploring the blogger.com website more would allow me to make similar changes to my Blog. Being able to share ideas within any online community, in this case a blogging community, could be so useful for any sort of educator.  Considering we are currently enrolled in an online Master of Music program, we are capable of sharing ideas from across the country and even across the globe.  This blog link just makes that possibility more accessible with more educators.

    The Music Tech Teacher site is an online extension of Karen Garrett's band and music technology class. On the site, she provides lessons, quizzes, and artifacts of student work. One nice feature is the scrolling set of images with students modeling the activities that take place in the piano lab.

    This is my favorite site for games that can be used as informal, formative assessments. There are many options under the "Quizzes/Pianos" tab. The games can be played as a class using the smartboard, or individually if you're lucky enough to get time in the computer lab.

But this same skill can become a disadvantage when those same students want to move into more complicated repertoire or advanced improvisational music-making. Here, their lack of foundation in the theoretical language of music will impede their progress, and it will be frustrating for already advanced players to stop and ‘go back to the beginning’ to pick up the language and basic theoretical concepts they need in order to move forward with their playing.

So many of the old marches and waltzes are out of print and difficult to come by, but this website has an extensive list of great works that are all public domain. One of these podcast collections is about Music and the Brain where research related to music and how it affects the brain is reviewed and discussed. This is an excellent resource for music advocacy. It is also a great resource for better understanding music learning.

    As a beginning band teacher, this program is incredibly valuable. Be Part of the Band is a fantastic resource to aide music educators in the recruitment process. The program offers high quality tools to help attract as many students to the band program as possible. Proper recruitment is crucial to the success of a program but is sometimes overlooked, and this program has a variety of ways to help bridge the gap between participating and non-participating students. On top of everything, the resources on this website are completely free of charge.

This website provides free resources for both recruitment and organization for bands. Individuals are able to make donations to the program, but no payment is required. Beapartoftheband.com not only provides demonstration videos for each instrument, the site also provides eighteen documents to assist with the recruitment process.

    Band recruitment is the biggest event in the life of a band director.  This site features high quality tools to help make our lives easier. It also features famous people that have been band members.  Students need to relate to the bigger picture sometimes.  They need to see that big athletic stars can be in the band as well.  I am always looking for new perspective to recruitment.

    The University of Indiana has provided a comprehensive set of individual instrument instructional videos for all instruments. These instructional videos include woodwind, brass, percussion, harp, keyboards, strings, and fretted strings. The view can pause the videos at any time and interact with the musical passages on the right side of the video. In addition to this being a comprehensive set of resources, it is also through a reputable source.

Teachers should use social media cites, e.g., blogs, to facilitate discussion and feedback from students, create online PLNs. The cross curricular benefit is increasing writing facility and literacy. A couple of concerns are cyberbullying and parents who may question how much learning is taking place with social media. Educators can help others, including students, understand that music learning can take place outside of the classroom through social media and broaden the audience.
