    Despite women leading the way in scholarship and culinary education, they are suspiciously vacant at the top of the leadership ladder. According to Bloomberg, only about 7% of executive chefs are woman, and "67% of executive women are in support roles...as opposed to running their own line of business." This doesn't appear to be because of a lack of entrepreneurial spirt, as "405 of restaurants are women-owned businesses or WOB, and startups by women are growing much faster than the industry overall." This made me reflect on my own city, as I do see women in executive positions, such as Stephanie Izard, Sarah Grunenberg, and Mindy Segal, they all got to their positions in very different ways. Probably the most successful, with currently 7-8 restaurants, is Izard, she got her start by winning a reality tv show and then joining forces with two male business owners (BOKA). Grunenberg also started visa vi the reality TV route, and now eventually owns and runs a very successful restaurant downtown. Mindy Segal is the only woman executive in this group that has built her business, her cookbooks, her brand, and now her cannibis retail, mostly by herself. It is interesting to relate these women to this article because while they are all three incredibly successful, only one was able to pull herself there through the three points mentioned in this article. In order for women to break the glass ceiling in restaurants and culinary, they will need to accomplish three main goals: 1. Gain confidence, 2. Increase their aspirations, and 3. Learn and Maintain Financial literacy. The "grim reality (is) that 96% of WOB do not cross the $1 million in revenue...(and) fewer than 8% seek external financing. Women "receive less than 4% of Small Business Administration loan dollars and less than 2% of venture capital dollars. For confidence, this article recommends to women to learn how to advocate for yourself. Use coaches, practices public speaking, and learn how to pitch your business

    This article discusses a new trend in hotels - women-only floors. Some hotels are starting to dedicate entire floors for women. I think this is an interesting concept. I would have thought this would only exist in places like hostels where there may be public bathrooms. However, this seems to be a growing trend in hotels that cater to business travelers. The floors are accessible only with the room cards and they are only given to women.  The article mentions a couple of times, that it makes women feel more secure but it didn't really explain why. One woman said she was new to the area and that's why it made he feel more secure. Seeing as how I am a man, I don't really see how being on a same sex floor of a hotel room could make you feel safer. Ladies could you help me out with this?

    This article is in essence about the broken tipping system within American culture today. The title in my opinion is a bit exaggerated but is truthful nonetheless. People within the service industry are being horribly mistreated by being underpaid and forced to rely upon tips for wages. The issue with this is that specifically women are being forced to dress skimpy and act a certain way (possibly flirtatiously) In order to possibly get better tips. With their salary being on average around $2 an hour, without tips they are being forced to live far below the poverty line. So, it's not tipping that makes you inadvertently sexist, it's that tips contribute to woman acting in a more appealing way to male customers in order to pull the standard tip percentage (20% to 25%).

I believe hotels will begin to implement more measures like this in large cities like New York. Similar to airports and large department stores, safety is a major concern. Asides from now being able to turn in your cell phone for monetary value and recycling purposes, you can also donate your used to battered women shelters, I have done this before. While some countries like Japan have used Robots for a while, it hasn't always been successful, but it is now becoming a norm in the industry to obtain them for service. Some makers say that robots are meant to "work beside people rather than replace them." Some researchers say that large cities like Vegas are at risk of jobs being automated at more than 60% in the Hospitality sector. This could wreak havoc on employment and harm those that are most vulnerable those living in poverty or just above and women of color. Those in official positions with the government do not take the threat of automation as seriously as they should when it comes to sectors that rely heavily on employing many people but are turning toward automation. I definitely viewed an uptick in the use of a variety of technologies to he;p clean and sanitize buildings. While I never came across a robot, I know that there was an emphasis on various low-tech devices to help clean. I think while there are certainly positive outcomes of using robots in service-oriented positions within the hospitality sector, I dare say we should be concerned if we start using them more than people. And while the Pandemic certainly helped push us towards accepting technology in day-to-day and in work, it shouldn't be the end all. I would like to further read as to why Henna Na Hotel in Japan had such a disappointing result from their all-robot hotel. I think it could shed some light on the do's and don'ts of robot usage.

    I really enjoyed reading this article. It gave lots of insight for the future of AI. I actually came across a website called chai.ml which is an online chatbot. You can talk to literally any kind of chatbot. From ones that make itineraries for you for wherever you go, to ones who want to experience a breakup situation. Its pretty neat but also really weird. I can for-see jobs being lost after playing around with that website.

My main concerns lie with the option to obtain rooms and keys through PCs and mobile phones, the smoke alarm aid and the energy management. One technological failure could cause any of these to cease operating, which means that guests could be locked out of their rooms, in danger if there is actually a fire (or inconvenienced because of a malfunctioning alarm), or inconvenienced because of a nonworking room temperature gauge. These issues could lead to many problems for the hotel that hosts these developments. So, the companies should analyze these issues before installing these developments.

      Conde Nast is a mass media company publishing well known magazines such as Vogue and Conde Nast Traveler. Over the past few years their brands have incorporated more and more events into their repertoire, so I wasn't surprised when I came across this article a few months back. In 2017 they acquired an event concierge platform called Ribyt which has evolved into Concierge.com. Not only is it a guest management software system - it also gives users access to a team of hospitality professionals who can handle project management, staffing, web design, and branding details. I was in the event industry for 5 years prior to starting the graduate program at FIU so I am always excited to see how tech and the events world intersect. I think this software is really innovative and believe it can be a great resource for meeting planners.

    I liked this article, but thought that it could have been more detailed. It offered many suggestions, but not that much intel into the systems that have been created or are in use to actually connect with candidates. For example, video interviewing. The best fit for the job might not always live close enough to travel for an interview. Skype interviews have become increasingly popular with hotels allowing them to quickly interview candidates without a person having to carve out a large portion of their day. The article did touch on the importance of following up very quickly which I agreed with, my property specifically is down 42% of our management due to hiring processes that are often drawn out.
