Hospitality Management Program Implements State-of-the-Art Technology - 1 views

  • After considerable industry-wide research, Kendall College has added MeetingMatrix International to their hospitality curriculum. MeetingMatrix provides state-of-the-art meeting planning technology solutions, which will soon be taught to all students enrolled in the hospitality school at Kendall College.
  • Founded on the principle of expanding and enhancing communication between event sites and meeting professionals around the world, it has become the industry leader and continues to enhance the meeting experience. Because of its presence and value within the meetings and events industry, Kendall College saw the need to implement this high-tech software into their curriculum.
  • Glen C. Ramsborg, Ph.D., CMP, was recently appointed as a Professor in the School of Hospitality Management at Kendall College and actively sought out the MeetingMatrix event planning software. Ramsborg, who joined the Kendall faculty in September, is a veteran education professional with a 25-year career in meeting and event management. He is a longtime member of both the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) and Meeting Professionals International (MPI), and was formerly the Senior Director of Education at PCMA. Due to his extensive background in the industry he understands the value of MeetingMatrix and what it will bring to the classroom.

  • Planners have access to a venue’s measured and certified diagrams, and then are able to create event setups specific to their needs, all with that particular venue’s exact dimensions and inventory items. From there, with the MeetingMatrix 3D-VR Browser, planners can view their desired setup in 3D Virtual Reality so that they can feel as though they are actually experiencing their event. The technology is advancing the way in which business is done, which is why Professor Ramsborg and Kendall College understand its importance in the education field and will include it in their meeting and event management courses.

As this article mentioned, MeetingMatris will be added to the hospitality curriculum in Kendall College. MeetingMatrix provides State-of-the Art meeting planning technology solutions. In my opinion, it is very necessary to provide the students with useful technology solutions and it provides a lot of assistance for their future job seeking. In the rapid development society, accurate and instant information decides if a business success or fail in a meeting plan. Therefore, more and more people begin to pay attention on this issue.

HNN - Hoteliers use tech to communicate with guests pre-stay - 0 views

  • Hoteliers are leveraging technology to connect with guests before they even arrive on-property, leading to an enhanced guest experience and, in some cases, a boost to the bottom line.
  • The technology connects to the PMS and allows the team to communicate with guests and offer ancillary services that could help drive revenue.
  • Every guest whose contact data is recorded in the system will receive a standard pre-arrival email containing information about the weather or events going on in the city, he said. The email might also include an offer to make a reservation at the in-house restaurant, creating an opportunity to drive ancillary revenue.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • While that initial email goes out to everyone in the database, Sauceda said the tool gives the ability to segment guests and target information.
  • “We can click a box and send the email only to wine-lover guests. We can customize it,” Sauceda said.
  • Sauceda said hoteliers have many opportunities to install technology platforms that sometimes it can be difficult to keep up with them all. However, if a hotel is moving down the path of installing new technology, he said leaders need to really vet their partner vendors.
  •
In this article marketing software that hotel's can use to send pre-arrival emails to guests is discussed. This type of contact allows hotels to increase revenue by offering additional services or upgrades as well as create detailed profiles about their guests. These profiles can be used to further segment and advertise as well as just improve the guest experience.

Cloud security: The reason hackers have it so easy will infuriate you - 0 views

Cloud computing has created a very hacking prone storage system because companies have not been paying as much attention to security as they should. Thus, by not taking the logical measures such as not uploading credentials to cloud storage systems, they are becoming prone to hacker raids. However, with the turning of the tide, new methods of security have presented themselves in the form of online tools such as HashiCorp's Vault Microsoft's Azure Key Vault, and Amazon's AWS Secrets Manager, which stores sensitive credentials in very limited access windows, as well as UpGaurd's BreachSight which detects online data leaks containing exposed and volatile client data, and Amazon's Amazon Macie, which learns the access patterns of your cloud storage,

HR management systems: Better, faster, sharper | hrmasia - 3 views

  • Earlier this year, hotel search platform Trivago, was seeking out a cloud-based HR solution capable of providing one single source of “truth” for employee data, while empowering HR leaders and managers with better insights to make faster and more accurate decisions. The company also needed a platform that its 1,300 employees globally could access at any time and from anywhere in the world. Using Workday’s Human Capital Management, the deployment saw Trivago transform day-to-day HR processes, such as compensation, absence management, time tracking, recruiting, expenses and performance and development. “We needed an HR solution that provided the technological platform for a single, always-up-to-date database – a solution that was flexible and especially scalable as we grow,” says Sian Williams, Business Operations and Strategy – Talent Solutions at Trivago.
  • “A one-size-fits-all approach is no longer feasible in HR as different companies have differing needs. Therefore, we provide a basic platform which is flexible for customisation,” he says.
  • “AI will enable more productivity as menial functions such as delegation of tasks will all be done by the system.”

The article talks about the integration of a new system called Rainmaker and RoomkeyPMS. The trend of using the "cloud" is ongoing, as RoomkeyPMS is software that is "cloud-powered" which helps to facilitate the way the front office handles their operations. Rainmaker integration with the PMS, on the other hand, is to help the back of the house. It is meant to increase hotel bookings and "streamline operations and revenue optimization processes". Highlights the first boutique hotel in Charleston, The Spectator Hotel, are the first to adapt this new collaboration to improve the way data is being accessed. Based on the article, the hotel is using these cloud based systems to be able to offer more innovative service to their consumers especially when it comes to how revenue is being handled. I think that having to cloud systems working together can be kind of difficult especially when they serve two different purposes. But with that being said, both softwares seem to work for the best individually. Having the ability to try this out on a smaller boutique hotel would be for the best because it allows hoteliers to conduct analysis for the systems on a smaller scale.

Businesses See GDPR as an Opportunity to Improve Data Privacy and Security - 0 views

  •
A new study done by IBM has discovered that nearly sixty percent of organizations are embracing the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), having their sights set on improving privacy, security, and data management. This is a relief to see as this particular subject in the hospitality industry has frequently come up as a major talking point with the developing technologies in the industry; the fact that industry leaders are viewing the GDPR in this manner rather than a compliance issue/restriction is refreshing. Seventy percent of survey responders are disposing data ahead of the deadline for compliance in an attempt to reduce their exposure. IBM did a separate poll that found only twenty percent of US consumers completely trusted organizations to maintain the privacy of their data. Due to this, businesses are using the recent GDPR compliance as a statement to consumers that they're looking to build trust and reliability with customers and drive innovation. However, even with the opportunities at hand, only thirty six percent of responders believed they will be fully compliant by the deadline. To minimize the amount of data an organization is managing, companies are taking measures such as reducing the number of people who have access to personal data or simply cutting down on the amount of data stored. Additionally, studies have found that the primary challenges organizations are facing with the GDPR include finding all the of the personal data stored in their business, ensuring the accuracy of said data, and making sure this data is in compliance in how it is shared or used. Another challenge to the new compliance is that companies are to report data breaches to regulators within 72 hours of the breach, yet IBM has found that only thirty one percent of companies have taken a look at the measures they have in place for incident response to account for this new rule in compliance.

Oracle Hospitality Stumbled in Micros Integration But Says It Has Recovered - 1 views

  • Three years ago, business software maker Oracle acquired Micros, a hotel and restaurant technology company, for $5.3 billion in cash.
  • Micros was the market leader. More hotels used Micros’s software to check in and check out guests than any other company’s reservation management software.
  • Oracle found the integration of Micros tough sledding in a few ways. Execution of the merger did not meet the expectations of many hotel customers.
  • ...19 more annotations...
  • Oracle was caught off guard. As a company not used to dealing with call-center-based customer service, it suddenly had to handle help desk requests for thousands of vendors
  • It took Oracle awhile to figure out how to plot a multi-year transition of Micros customers from license-based deals to Web-based, subscription services.
  • One hotelier said, “I know that Oracle recognizes that and [they are] very open about how much investment they need to make, but it is a risk to us as a business. As we are looking to try and innovate, not being able to plug other systems into Opera easily constrains what we can do.”
  • The first hotel group to agree to move all of its properties to Oracle’s cloud-based property management system is Mövenpick,
  • Oracle Hospitality is “growing above the market average.”
  • “We’re the number one provider of property management systems in North American and worldwide,” he said. “We’re also taking market share in geographies where Micros had operated through partners.
  • Since the acquisition, the company boosted its number of customer service representatives by more than 30 percent to better handle the volume of requests
  • One global benchmark was to cut the wait time for customers calling the help desk to under two minutes, on average. The company is now meeting that goal, he said. The company set a goal of resolving at least 70 percent of customer support requests within an hour. Webster said it is now achieving that.
  • A typical global brand might have a dozen agreements with local Micros offices. Oracle streamlined the patchwork of deals into a single worldwide agreement.
  • “We’ve made massive progress in bringing [the Micros property management system] Opera to the cloud,” Webster said.
  • Oracle Hospitality has boosted its research-and-development headcount by about 50 percent.
  • et us reduce the training time for staff by almost half and improve the speed of service for guests by nearly 40 percent.”
  • We’ve innovated in hardware, too. In the last year, we’ve been able to bring our complete new line of hardware onto tablets, not just fixed work stations, and a complete line of mobile solutions for our Opera property management system. We brought out a new housekeeping operations application via mobile, too.”
  • We’re now focused on helping our hotel customers create exceptional guest experiences while reducing the cost and complexity of IT.” He said hotels using Oracle no longer need database administrators or other IT support staff to manage the technology.
  • Opera Property Management System for multi-tenant hotels has integrations with more than 1,400 third-party tools, such as for accounting and revenue management.
  • Christian Weste, the boss of Hotel Lundia in Sweden, wrote: “Seems to be the same all over Europe and probably the rest of the world also. It takes months to get in touch with someone and even then the issue will most likely not be solved.”
  • Oracle Hospitality has responded to competition by widening the aperture of its target market. While Micros had tended to focus on larger hotels and chains, Oracle Hospitality says it wants it all — from so-called tier-one hotels in global capitals down to small independents in tiny corners of the globe.
  • Oracle’s pricing strategy may tell a different story. Its relatively high fees tends to favor large chains and pose obstacles for small group and independent hotels.
  • Oracle will win the day only if it acts as a platform that can play nicely and affordably with new third-party tools, such as for revenue management; new businesses, such as alternative lodging, and new ways of doing business, such as alternative forms of payment like Apple Pay, Alipay, bitcoin, and Google Wallet.
  •
Three years ago Oracle was able to buy out the leading company in hotel and restaurant technology, Micros. But the transition was quite tough on the company leaving many customers dissatisfied with the service they were receiving. One reason for this is because Oracle was not used to call-center based customer service making it quite difficult for them to adapt on their side but it was also difficult for the customers to adapt to taking all their data online to the cloud. In order to keep happy customers Oracle was able to boost the number of customer service representatives which made each and every customer have a shorter wait time and also the they are able to serve more customers as well. Oracle has also taken the step into streamlining the agreements with their customers into one global agreement making the service across the board on the same level, they were able to get more companies on the cloud, they were able to reduce training time by making the systems more user friendly and also have changed the PMS system to be on separate hardware such as tablets. They have also decided not only to focus on the hardware and IT aspect, but make it possible for hotels to give the best experience possible by adding more tools to track guest information but also for revenue and accounting management. At the time there are still many opposers to the systems and are being voices by many General Managers of the world but with the improvements they are bound to please more customers.
  •
This article talks about hotels investing and implementing micros as their main system.
  •
For three years now, Oracle has been the owner of Micros, a software that manages payments and reservations for more than 300,000 hospitality owners. This article speaks on how Oracle has been handling the transition, and the obstacles they are facing now, including competition from other hospitality softwares that hotels around the world are using. Most softwares today are using cloud based systems, but Oracle was having some mishaps with that transition, therefore making customers unhappy. To relieve some of the tension between customers and the company, there hired about 30% more representatives to handle the volume of requests, and questions from Oracle users. With more research and more representatives, 70% of customer support requests are being resolved within an hour. With time of the essence in the hospitality world, this is an important aspect for users of the system. Competition is out there, and price is a large factor for small and family owned businesses that cannot afford the Oracle system, but they are now working on widening their marker to independently owned hotels from anywhere around the globe. Being a user of Micros in my own place of work, the computer software makes it easy for both the employee and the guests, with straightforward prompts and payments that deliver little to no hassle. Oracle would like to keep on growing and with the rate that they have overcome their mishaps and learned to adapt to new technologies such as ApplePay and Bitcoin, it seems it can only go up from here.

Those Tiny Hotel Toiletry Bottles Are on Their Way Out - The New York Times - 1 views

  • In what might become the first such state law of its kind, a bill, A.B. 1162, is making its way through the California Legislature that aims to scrap the tiny single-use plastic bottles at hotels and other hospitality establishments. It was passed in the Assembly last week, and has moved to the Senate for committee examination.
  • “The goal is really to start to phase out single-use plastics in our state in general,”
  • “This is really low-hanging fruit because the industry is already moving in that direction.”
  • ...12 more annotations...
  • The city council of Orlando, Fla., on Monday approved a partial ban on straws and bags, and last month, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, banned plastic bags starting from next year.
  • In March, lawmakers in New York agreed on a statewide ban on most types of single-use plastic bags from retail sales, making it the second state to do so after California, which has been at the national forefront of legislative action to ban plastics clogging shorelines.
  • In 2016, the world generated 242 million tons of plastic waste, according to the World Bank. North America, which it defines as Bermuda, Canada and the United States, is the third largest producer of plastic waste, totaling more than 35 million tons.
  • The California bill says that from the start of 2023, lodging establishments with more than 50 rooms would be prohibited from providing a small plastic bottle containing a personal care product in a bathroom or sleeping room. Establishments with 50 rooms or fewer would have until Jan. 1, 2024.
  • The California Hotel & Lodging Association had pushed for an extension of the deadline to make it easier for hotels to comply.
  • He estimated it could cost about $70 for each of the 500,000 hotel rooms in California to be transformed to accommodate multi-use dispensers.
  • Generally, hotels and hospitality organizations assume guests will nick toiletries. But if they don’t disappear from rooms, bottles left behind are often repurposed.
  • Some donate extras to homeless shelters or other organizations helping people in need.
  • “In one month alone, this can amount to over 380 pounds of toiletries diverted from the landfill and sent to those in need,” the hotel says.
  • InterContinental Hotels Group said last year that it would remove plastic straws from more than 5,400 hotels in nearly 100 countries by the end of 2019 and introduce bulk bathroom amenities at some of its brands.
  • Some hotels work with Clean the World, an organization in Orlando, Fla., that recycles soaps and leftover plastic bottles collected through its partnerships with 8,000 establishments.
  • Like grocery bags and straws, the miniature bottles of toiletries and cosmetics that many guests swipe from hotels are in the sights of legislators and hotel establishments who are trying to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste.
  •
This is a smart move, both from a environmental and a cost cutting perspective as refillable containers will likely reduce costs over the long run. Marriott has been looking at replacing this process for years (Marriott Banning Little Shampoo Bottles By 2020 Associated Press - https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/marriott-banning-little-shampoo-bottles-2020-n1047116) However, even Marriott admits that it doesn't have the process right yet. There will be a significant impact to smaller operators whom 1) Will be challenged with an additional increase in cost for new dispensary options 2) Have less access to big brand economy of scale purchasing which specialized dispensary products will require. Though this is as a policy almost a foregone conclusion, there seems little doubt that extensive thought has to be put into the impact on operators as a whole, and the customer made cognizant of the fact that costs will rise due to this change.

Council Post: Technology Is The Key To Hospitality Success - 0 views

  • In today’s world, it’s imperative that companies and businesses constantly evolve
  • here are two different groups of people that you need to cater to as a business: your guests and your investors.
  • technology has helped my business grow and improve exponentially.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • If implemented correctly, it can help optimize everyday procedures and render them more efficient.
  • The program not only provides our investors with a more convenient and transparent experience; it also allows us as a company to be more efficient.
  • It seems pretty obvious to combine service with technology, but it’s actually relatively uncharted territory in the hospitality industry.
  • I firmly believe that the future of the hospitality industry is heading in this direction,  and I encourage leaders in the industry to explore, test and implement these systems and see the benefits for themselves.
  • So go ahead and implement all of the cool, high-tech systems you want.
  •
Information technology has become extremely important to the hospitality industry. It has helped with customer service, financial status, and in many other ways. With so much changing with information technology it is vital that companies keep up with all these changes in order to not fall behind. As stated in the article if information technology is implemented correctly it can help a company become the most efficient it has ever been. This has also helped improve the communication between companies and their investors, now communication can be done via email or call in a matter of seconds. As I stated above it has also improved guest service and communication, this includes apps, messages and allowing guests to have immediate assistance with any of their needs. When you improve customer service and create an open window for communication, it brings in more guests to want to stay with your company and give their business to you. Not only this but, technology has helped companies save money by needing to provide less staff. This is why information technology has helped so many companies succeed financially.

A viewpoint on GDS surcharges and the evolving airline distribution landscape | PhocusWire - 0 views

  • The fact is that the current system is old. It’s been around since the 60s and it has serious flaws baked into its older mainframe approach. Not so long ago, research revealed security flaws in PNRs as used by the GDS, which meant they could be easily hacked.
  • This means that travel agents’ bookings are swayed by the airlines they have preferred agreements with. It earns them bonus payments if they reach a certain volume each year. This can skew the equation away from the traveler's best interests.
  • The fact is that three main players still dominate the global travel distribution system.
  • ...8 more annotations...
  • Recently, there have been disputes between certain airlines and the GDS.
  • Tensions between airlines and GDSs have been further exacerbated with carriers making more from unbundling their fares and then offering services like luggage, food and drink as add-ons. This move has been hugely profitable for airlines -- and has increased airline revenues by shielding these add-ons from middlemen.
  • European airlines have perhaps been most active in exploring models outside the GDS.
  • The fact is that it’s new technology that will guide and change the travel distribution system. Smaller players have more of an opportunity to create innovative solutions that do not involve the big three.
  • They have direct access to consumers and are pushing hard into selling travel. If Facebook opens up its user base of more than one billion people to travel companies you can imagine that many will jump on board.
  • Airlines have been heading towards a merchandising strategy for some time now, increasing profits and shifting from a service provider to a retailer.
  • However, there is no doubt that this is the path they need to take to grow and attract wider sales.
  • The fact is, in order to make these changes successfully they cannot be restricted by financial burdens, outdated systems and old technology. New platforms and systems need to be continuously developed to support them as the airlines’ business model evolves and passengers demand more from their carrier wherever they book their tickets.
  •
Some argue that the GDS is a fair system. It it does enable travel agents and clients to access travel data, make price comparisons, access special rates and book travel. The big 3 Travelport, Amaadeus, and Sabre do generate billions of dollars of global travel sales for travel providers. The fact is though that the current system is old, dating back to the 60's, has serious flaws, and can be hacked. It is also biased as travel agents bookings are swayed by the airlines they have preferred agreements with, which can skew the equation away from the traveler's best interests. Having 3 Big players with a virtual travel monopoly is not an ideal situation. Carriers are fighting back and airlines are changing strategy. Tension between airlines and the GDS caused by disputes has European airlines exploring models outside the GDS. To make the changes successful they cannot be restricted by outdated systems, old technology or financial burdens.
  •
It discusses the high fees of the GDS and the fact that their system needs to be upgraded. Also, the challenges airlines face with paying those fees and ways the airlines are making additional revenue without having to pay fees to the GDS.
  •
Due to the high fees some airlines were or are paying to the GDS companies, they are re-thinking their strategy to get more revenue out of the passengers, in order to mitigate the lost of revenue for not being anymore in an open GDS market like Amadeus. Amadeus knows they are the big gorilla in the market with a 44% of the share, compared to Sabre or Travelport, the other two leaders in the GDS market.

New Technologies Will Revolutionize The Hospitality Industry - 1 views

  • In fact, Gartner believes that artificial intelligence (AI) will create 2.3 million jobs in 2020 while only eliminating 1.8 million, for a net gain of half a million jobs added to American company payrolls.
  • Inevitably, the course of every industry will continue to evolve, incorporate and need more technology to be successful
  • Only very recently have voice and natural language processing technologies advanced enough to truly interpret questions

  • Humans in the hospitality industry won’t be fully replaced, though.
  • While augmented reality (AR) has yet to become a prominent feature of most businesses, consumers should expect to see more adoption within the hospitality industry in the next few years
  • Restaurants are also taking advantage of AR promotions
  • In a hospitality context, we’re getting closer to seamless processes where consumers can authenticate a purchase without a phone or wallet, digital or otherwise.
  • Some hotel chains like Wyndham Grand have offered promotions to guests willing to give up their devices and go “off the grid” during their stay.
  • Technology is no match for the warmth and personality of the maitre D's welcome

This article is about AI (Artificial Intelligence) and its impact in the hospitality industry. Although innovations in voice recognition, biometrics, and AR (augmented reality) are not expected to replace human contact, AI technology will revolutionize the industry by taking over mundane, simple, and routine work. Since these ordinary tasks could be time consuming, AI will allow hospitality personnel to focus on more meaningful and complex transactions. AR, for instance, was already implemented by Holiday Inn during the 2012 Olympics to provide realistic thematic and virtual representations. Biometric technology allows customers to authenticate their purchase without a wallet or human interaction. Nevertheless, the article also touches on an interesting concept called 'tech detox.' Some hotels already have promotions for guests willing to stay disconnected in order to be aware of their surrounding environment. In my opinion, AR is the best innovation, especially in a hotel. From TV programming, internet access, interactive city maps, hotel information, restaurant menu, and room service, this technology has endless opportunities to make any hotel experience unique.

This article talks about the evolution of IT sector and how this has positively impact the hospitality industry. It brings examples like retail stores where we went from simple cash register to the use of AI in recent times.
  •
Forbes articles are infamous for discussing some of the most relevant topics, and this one discussing the technological advancements in the hospitality industry is no different. The article mentions currently growing forms of technology that are already being used as well as possible future technologies that might begin to be used. For example, Speak-to-order is disussed as a technology many customers are already using via their phones with siri or in their homes with alexa and the potential for a voice controlled intelligent system is discussed as a virtual assistant possibility in the industry. Not many businesses are using something like this yet, but it might be something implemented in the future. The article also provides information on how new technology could possible effect people and job cut backs. I was intrigued to read their estimate that Artificial intelligence would actually create 2.3 million jobs and only cut away 1.8 no longer necessary positions. Numbers like this give hope to many people that fear the implementation of technology for fear of losing their jobs. In closing, the article aims to remind readers that no amount of technology or innovation will ever be able to replace the service industry completely, people will always enjoy human interaction.
  •
Technology has evolved over the years to a point where we rely on artificial intelligence to assist with our daily tasks. Examples of this would Amazon's Alexa or Siri. It is not surprise, that the hospitality industry will not shy away from this technology, but rather infuse this technology on within our operations. One would think that having technology to take our restaurant orders would replace hospitality professionals, but it actually would do the complete opposite. With the implementation of this technology, those working in the industry would have more time and opportunities to spend with guest and enhance their experience.
  •
Technology has become a must-have part of hospitality industry. It helps serve guests faster and more efficient. Data of guests regarding to their special wants and needs is saved into the system will create customized service for guest. However, technology cannot replace people because we're in service industry. It always requires human interaction, that's why it's called hospitality. Technology can be used as a powerful tool to make our job better and easier.
  •
I believe the article glosses over many of the potential implications of AI in the industry. For one, to date, technology advances have actually increased the workload of the more highly skilled management personel. A General Manager in a hotel now has to have degrees of knowledge in pricing system logic and demand economics, knowledge of systems and system implementation and the skill sets of individuals required to implement and sustain these systems. As AI and AI logic does begin to invade the Hospitality Industry, it is going to require our leaders to become far more cognizant of the uses, and maintenance costs involved in these technologies. This is not to say that this is necessarily a negative, however the implications for the skills sets required in the industry are a necessary talking point when citing that this technology wont replace jobs. Those mundane tasks which the article refers to are deemed as simple processes, but when discussing the already complex process of an agent reserving a guest in a Forbes rated property (as an example), this is going to get even more complicated in how we leverage these technologies, how we approach to market with the consumer.
  •
Technology is continuing to revolutionize daily. All industries are experiencing such change but the hospitality industry will not completely take away is human employees. In fact, tech revolution will simply take away from mundane tasks simultaneously assisting with efficiency and customer satisfaction. With the advent of augmented reality (AR) guests are now able to electronically visualize themselves at the location. Technology cannot outperformance the warmth of guest service reps. yet, the future of hospitality will integrate both the advances of electronics and human interactions.

This article talks about how companies make the grave mistake of thinking that cybersecurity is merely an issue that should be addressed by an IT team and that no one else is responsible for addressing risks and understanding them. Most C-suite employees don't understand what the risks are, and usually these risks vary from company to company. It is not that you should only consider that you can get hacked, but you should consider and identify what kinds of information can get hacked and why. The article denotes an example of an Asian automobile company that needed to implement a new system to mitigate security risks and in the process, ended up locking up other companies who needed to use their systems to find out about their products. So those companies started to create fake profiles to try and access the information -- all so that they could just do their job. This showed that people are more interested in just getting their job done than understanding cybersecurity and why certain systems are in place. The way of thinking up security systems should be creative and involve all parts of an organization. Departments won't know what their role is until they identify what information is important to them, what their purpose is in the company, and what is valuable to them. By identifying this, they can come up with ways to secure this information and monitor its delivery. Businesses don't look at cybersecurity as a risk of their business just as a shipping company would look at weather risks as a potential threat to their revenue. It is looked at as more of an abstract concept and this stops people from implementing successful strategies to keep their information safe. Cybersecurity shouldn't be viewed as "so impenetrable" that no one would ever understand it. This requires everyone to get involved and understand the implications of cybersecurity on their own work, specifically, and identify who their main adversaries may be.
