Should You Use HRIS for Employee Scheduling? - HRIS Payroll Software - 3 views

  • Using HRIS for scheduling can be of particular benefit to workplaces in industries such as retail, medical, food service, and hospitality where shifts may vary widely.
  • HRIS can be configured to alert you to uncovered shifts or shifts where more coverage is needed based on forecasts.
  • It is not an exaggeration to say that employees base their lives around their work schedules. Having scheduling information in advance regularly can quickly and dramatically increase employee contentment.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Depending on the available features, employees may be able to submit feedback regarding preferences in regards to scheduling. Knowing which employees prefer the late shifts, which prefer the early morning shifts, and which employees would like to pick up available additional shifts can simultaneously make scheduling easier and make employees happier.
  • HRIS can help you to identify times when it may be possible to assign certain employees training tasks or simply take employees aside and teach them new skills.
  •
This article was great to read because it focuses on how HRIS can be beneficial for scheduling, which I previously haven't thought about. The part that stood out most to me was the fact that it can forecast future sales and rush hours so that it can assist you in making sure there are enough staff members scheduled to cover those extra busy hours. In turn, the employees will also be a little bit happier with their schedules because they are able to get them earlier, request days off, and switch with other staff. As the industry is moving into being dominated by Generation Y and Z employees, who want their jobs to work around their lives, I think this can really help the companies.

New HVAC Hotel and Apartment Technology Obtains Large EPAct Tax Incentives - Energy Tax... - 1 views

  • New HVAC technology called VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume system), also known as VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow), is substantially reducing hotel and apartment building energy expenses. This new technology began to mainstream into the U.S. market after the enactment of the Energy Policy Act and is now being widely recommended by the architecture, engineering, and HVAC industries.
  • there are tax deductions of up to $0.60 per square foot for each of the three major building subsystems: lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning), and the building envelope.
  • VRF/VRV is an air conditioning system most efficient for commercial buildings because of the ability to individualize control for different zones/rooms, whereas conventional systems condition a building as a whole. The system is very beneficial for buildings with varying cooling needs and different zones.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Often hotel investment groups own multiple properties so if they are pleased with VRF/VRV technology incentives, they will replicate it across their hotel portfolio.
  • For both hotels and apartments building HVAC is the largest energy cost item. VRF/VRV’s will annually reduce total energy costs for these two markets by at least 20% and may reduce current building energy cost by as much as 40%
  •
The obvious initial measure hotels take to reduce energy cost and become more "green" are by replacing lights bulbs with LED, switching to paperless options, and other small tasks. The most cost efficient though is the conversion of their central air conditioner and heater, as this makes up a large percentage of costs for the hotel, which is also a burden on the environment due to the excess use of gas and electric to power the system. The new Energy Policy Act that was put into effect helps hotel not only save on long-term costs in the HVAC department, but also get a tax credit. This credit can range from $0.60 to $1.80 per square footage of the hotel. This is helping to encourage hotels to make the switch. This type of technology allows the air to be controlled by different zones in the hotel, which can be each individual room, floor, or however the hotel sets it up. This also prevents the air constantly running in the hotel room when it is unoccupied by hotel guests.

Transforming the Guest Experience with iBeacons - Blog - 0 views

  • One of the latest trends to impact hotel marketing and the guest experience is the iBeacon, which sends a Bluetooth push notification to guests’ mobile devices when they come within close proximity of the iBeacon. This presents an opportunity for on-the-spot guest marketing. Beacon technology is the key to improving guests’ experiences. It can help you streamline check-in and check-out, guide guests around the property, and notify them about targeted offers at your restaurant, bar, or spa.
  • Beacons are a super effective source for gathering customer insights. By measuring things such as dwell times, how much time guests spend at certain areas in the hotel, and which areas of the hotel are the most popular during specific hours of the day, hotels can plan reward offers accordingly.
  • Beacons also are useful in measuring and enhancing staff productivity. For instance, beacons can alert housekeeping staff to service a room when the guest is out or to not disturb a guest when she is in the room. No more door hangers!
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • If your hotel is equipped with beacons, guests can simply walk into your hotel lobby where they’ll receive ‘check-in’ push notifications on the hotel app. The push notification shows the reservation and asks for confirmation. Guests can confirm their reservation with a quick swipe of their finger–the result is a hassle-free guest experience that begins as soon as they enter your hotel.
  • These can also be used to build an interactive tour of the hotel, directing guests and providing info about specific amenities or features.
  • By providing the right offer, at the right place, and the right time, location-based mobile marketing can yield exceptionally high conversion rates with precise ad targeting.

I found this article extremely interesting! Just last weekend I was in Key West at the Hilton Doubletree and I had my first experience of using the keyless entry, which was by using my cell phone as a key instead. My bluetooth was turned off so the staff informed me to turn it on and that was how the phone communicated with turning the door unlocked. This article discusses about how bluetooth technology now enables guests to do more than just unlock their hotel door. Checking in, setting the room temperature, ordering food, and managing the television can all be done. When a guest is walking near a restaurant in the hotel, bluetooth marketing technology can send a notification to the guest offering them something, which can lead to an increase in sales. The future of hotels is ever-changing with technology. Great article to read!

Must-Know Event Technology Trends for 2020 | Social Tables - 3 views

  • In addition to speeding up registration time, incorporating RFID technology into events will help with both qualitative and quantitative data analysis, thereby making it easier for planners to target what worked during their event and what didn’t.
  • Though event apps are admittedly helpful, they now have a new hurdle to face. Producing an application to be used for one event is costly, time consuming, and inefficient, as users must learn how to interact with the app for each new event attended. Phone storage space is very important to consumers. Many are hesitant to download an application that they will only use once. Thus, event apps that can continue to deliver value to customers beyond the date of the event itself, are going to become a huge trend.
  • RFID also has the potential to allow attendees to become more engaged with the event across various social platforms.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Menu options, travel directions, appointment updates, facial recognition software and contact information are just the beginning of the very real ways that event planners will soon be able to use wearable tech.
  • Event technology trends aside, the number one thing for any event professional to remember, is to let your tools work for you, rather than the other way around. The purpose of implementing advanced technology is to make your life, and the life of those whom you plan events for, as easy as possible.
  •
RFID, event applications, wearable technology, virtual reality, and social media are upcoming popular uses for event planners. With RFID event planners are able to keep better track of the guests attending the event as well as keeping them more involved. I first heard of this a few months ago when attending an event and it described that a chip with RFID was placed inside the wristband-type ticket. For me, the most interesting thing is the wearable technology! Imagine an event where you can have directions given to you or a layout of the event right on your wrist! Also, the watch can notify you of events happening within an event or you can see order your food or see the menu. To know that soon enough it will be a norm for everyone to have some type of wearable technology and that event planners can truly get the guests involved through this use is exciting.

Budgeting for Cybersecurity: Risk vs Reward - NuData Blog - 0 views

  • Companies are facing an onslaught of cybercrime – everything from DDoS attacks to breaches to insider theft – and the numbers are staggering. Cyberattacks typically cost large businesses $861,000 and small business on average about $86,500, according to Kaspersky Labs. Jupiter Research is estimating that the cost of data breaches will reach $2.1 trillion globally by 2019. It is the frequency of attacks and the cascade of numbers which now makes this a CEO and Boardroom issue as cyberattacks could cause some major damage or even take whole businesses down.
  • IT Security budgets are set to grow 14% on average over the next three years with small business spending as little as a $1,000 all the way to a million dollars for large companies. While some analysts like Cybersecurity Ventures predict that there will be a burst of spending – 12-15% year over year growth through 2021, Gartner Research reports that IT security spending will account for less than 5% of worldwide IT spending.
  • You can also get more budgeting dollars by leveraging bottom line increases such as incentives for VIP customers, revenue increases, and spend increases throughout the customer lifecycle.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Security spending does not equal security effectiveness
  •
I found with this article that cyber attacks are becoming alarmingly more common than we have prepared ourselves for. Businesses now need to invest in their own cyber security department or, as the article suggests, apply a cyber security budget to each department. With security budgets predicted to increase 14%, money should be collected through the customers over a lifetime of the customer so that the budget is continually there. I found this article to stand out to me because I never thought of cyber security being so crucial, but it easily makes sense. I think a lot of business lack in providing the proper amount of security to prevent cyber attacks. Personally, I never heard of a cyber security department so this was new for me to read about.

Enhancing the Travel Experience Through Personalization - 0 views

  • By looking beyond fare revenue and basic services such as excess baggage fees, airlines have the opportunity to enhance their revenue through the development of personalized, branded services higher in the value chain
  • 79 percent of passengers preferred to buy additional services directly from the airline rather than a third-party vendor
  • One example of using technology to develop a personalized customer service strategy comes from Emirates airlines, who signed an agreement in January to adopt Sabre Corporation’s technology that allows consumers to easily purchase a range of customized fares. The two companies will also use the solution to provide the airline’s fares to global travel agents who use Sabre.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Travelers can select from Emirates’ branded fares that offer the option of choosing from budget fares, the most reward miles or the greatest degree of flexibility.
  • Utilizing technology to enhance the travel experience reflects a growing trend of airlines operating more like the retail industry. This trend will continue as travelers come to expect increasingly personalized service, and airlines that adopt a retail-oriented customer service strategy will better meet the needs and desires of travelers before, during and after their journey.
  •
The leader in the airline industry, Emirates airlines is collaborating with Sabre Corporation Technology to provide better services for it's customers, as well as receiving more in revenue. Studies have shown that customers enjoy customizing their travel plans and by working with this new type of technology partnership, the software is being developed that will allow the customers to customize every aspect of their trip. They can filter based upon price, miles earned, and date/time while then adding on any other options, but rather through just one airline, this software allows guests to choose from all airlines within the Emirates family. I think this type of investment technology is the future, because the airline industry has already changed the way we purchase airline tickets, by no longer including seat selection, checked baggage, and now even carry-on baggage. Instead of trying to make the customers feel like the airlines are charging for every littl thing (which they are), this type of technology can let guests feel like they are truly creating their own trip.

  • ergonomically friendly, allowing them to fit into small spaces at the POS counter and eliminating arranging and rearranging the POS counter to accommodate larger units.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • power-packed tablet technology becoming more sophisticated and primed for clean, seamless integration into the customer experience.
  • 4. Big data from on-site and external sources will be more accessible to small businesses. Among other POS predictions, in 2017 the playing field will begin to level with more options for small business to access data. Data mining and analytics tools are now within reach of SMBs, both from usability and budget standpoints, and they will use them to gain a competitive edge.
  • Merchants that stay ahead of the curve, stand the strongest chance to be firmly in the black through the year and beyond.
  •
This article predicted POS trends for 2017 and narrowed it down to convenience, mobile retail, smarter technology use, accessibility, and media. I found this article interesting to read because most of this I have seen throughout the hospitality industry. As cloud storage systems are becoming more common, tablets are being used in placed of large desktop computers because they are cheaper and not much storage is needed. The article also stated that Global Market Insights, a research firm, predicts that POS terminal market will increase 19% from 2016 to 2023. This shows that the industry is changing as a whole and for those who haven't converted yet to this type of technology, they may want to consider doing so. It also explained how technology can be used to gather more data about the consumer/customers and also to use the technology to attract customers to dine in at the restaurant or shop because they want a more interactive experience.

Top 5 Trends in the Modern Hotel PMS - StayNTouch - 1 views

  • Cloud
  • it’s also dynamic and scalable for the future. In addition to these savings, cloud-based PMS also offers immediate advantages like remote login allowing for anytime, real time access, distribution management, automated tasks, multi property management, mobile guest journey, and real-time data analytics, to name just to name a few.
  • Mobility
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • However, with new PMSs, technology has evolved to the point where it has the capability to deliver any type of data to any type of device at any given moment.
  • Guest engagement
  • provides a real insight into guests stay and spending habits
  • Endless Integration
  • One of the biggest strengths of a cloud-based hotel management system is that it can be easily connected to other software applications, even if these applications don’t share the same provider
  • Sleek Design
  • business now also need to be mobile.
  •
This very interesting article explains the top 5 trends currently with the hotel property management systems. The obvious top trend is the cloud-based systems because the cost is so much less and the efficiency is so high, that many don't have more con's than pro's so there is almost little to no reason for hotel companies to jump right into this trend, if they haven't already done so. The other trends mentioned were mobility, guests engagement, endless ietegration, and sleek design, which all in a way tie in with the new cloud-based systems. The one I found most interesting was the guest engagement because with the cloud systems, employees are able to connect with a guest and other employees at any time and essentially anywhere because the cloud PMS is able to be used on mobile devices. The systems are also more integrated with other software that understanding the true nature of the guests is easier and therefore the best service can be provided to accommodate that guest to his/her specific needs, without him or her needed to ask for it.

Why a global distribution system is an effective booking channel for your hotel - SiteM... - 0 views

  • All the evidence points to suggest that the GDS is not a dying channel – and there are good reasons why.
  • A global distribution system can increase hotel bookings and revenue by placing hotels on more ‘supermarket shelves’ globally. This approach is particularly effective at capturing international corporate travellers.
  •
This article stood out to me because it stands behind the future of the global distribution systems. Direct bookings have increased .8% in the first quarter of 2016, but GDS also increased during the time at 1.3%. Having rates and rooms availability easily accessible for travel agencies is still crucial for the hotels, especially due to the increase in business travelers. This article mentions GDS by SiteMinder, which is a platform that connects the hotels to all the GDS systems, making it easier to manage and control because when one room is sold on one platform, all the other platforms are recognized that that room is gone. I mentioned in my post on the discussion board that I think the future of the GDS can still survive as long as it continues to adapt to what the industry trends are heading towards. This SiteMinder I think is exactly that. An easily controllable system that is supportive of a pool inventory, that operates as if there is only one GDS system out there, although there are several.

About SERI | SERI - Sustainable Electronics Recycling International - 1 views

  • Recognizing the need for comprehensive best-practices
  • that addressed the operational and environmental challenges in electronics recycling and repair, the US Environmental Protection Agency convened a multi-stakeholder process to create a voluntary, market-based mechanism for ensuring best practices in electronics recycling.  What emerged from that process was the “Responsible Recycling practices for Use in Accredited Certifications Programs” (R2) Standard.
  •
SERI is multi-stakeholder group made up of the Environmental Protection Agency, Regulators, Trade Associations, and many others to commit to recycling in a non-harmful way electronic waste, more commonly known as e-waste. This group certifies recycling centers to ensure that the most environmentally friendly practices are put into place and a locator can be found on their website for one to use. It is estimated currentlybthat at this rate, wasted electonics will increase 33% by the end of the decade, which is an alarming amount. This shows that governement officials are starting to take a stance.

Predicting the Future of Computer Networks and the Internet - 0 views

  • Broadband routers and other home gateways become obsolete: As people end up owning hundreds of wearable and mobile devices that need to communicate both inside in the home and away, installing fixed routers inside a home to manage traffic will no longer make sense: Devices will all communicate with each other and the Internet directly.
  •
This article predicts the future of networking and the internet, which is a challenging thing to do, considering how complex this technology is. Among some things predicted are that web site address space will eventually run out and the domain names will crash as human recognition will be able to navigate through web pages. The most interesting thing I found is that broadband routers will soon disappear due to multiple internet capable devices will be able to solely communicate with each other, meaning our phones, watches, and computers will all be connected without a router. It also goes deeper into the possibility of a future without an internet network. It's hard to predict that we will also be able to fight against cyber attacks and spam and keep our internet at use. Imagine a future with no internet! What will be the next big thing then?
