Demonstrating ROI in Revenue Management to Hotel Owners Today : 4Hoteliers - 0 views

  • Advanced analytics built into today’s best revenue management systems use hotel and industry data for predictive price-sensitivity demand modelling. When used effectively to drive strategic decisions, data analysis leads to increased profitability and improved risk management that is associated with the uncertainty of demand.
  • When applied to its fullest potential, revenue management and technology can additionally positively impact efficiency and improve operational performance across an entire property.
  • And when it comes to new or improved technology, many hotel owners tend to view cost rather than undertaking an ROI measurement to determine when the technology will pay for itself.
  • ...9 more annotations...
  • To ascertain ROI, many often look to their performance over the previous year. But that number always has an asterisk next to it, or if it doesn’t, it should.
  • the hotel modelling removes automated pricing, inventory controls and overbooking strategies,
  • ROU can be ascertained by using advanced revenue management systems and provides much more detail than year-over-year revenue growth.
  • The first step involves monitoring a hotel’s performance over a typical 90-day window. Simultaneously, over this same 90-day period, a carbon copy of the hotel is made, except this clone does not have the revenue management system in place
  • This is where a better formula, called revenue opportunity uplift (ROU) provides a more authentic picture.
  • This means, on days of high demand, the manual-environment property is more inclined to accept business on a first-come, first-served basis,
  • What hotels discover is additional revenue opportunity hiding in each of those automated decisions
  • Overall, ROU provides a better measurement of the incremental benefit of a hotel’s technology purchase rather than reflecting an improvement from positive market conditions
  • Through utilising the ROU measure, hotel executives also have a powerful way to demonstrate the financial benefits of revenue management to owners and show a true ROI.
  •
Operators focus on cost, and this can prohibit the Operator from realizing the advantages and benefit of utilizing an RMS. When looking at an ROI they will often utilize Pacing data from a year over year perspective which is often, as the author puts it, asterisked. A simple explanation is the number of variables that can lead to impractical or flawed comparison such as mis-segmentation, unique events or otherwise. The author proposes instead that Operators should look at ROU, which roughly speaking takes market dynamics and most of the variables out of the equation. An ROU analysis (Revenue Uplift Opportunity) establishes a baseline measurement over a 90 day period that requires the establishment of two models (carbon copies) of the Hotel in question. The first, is a manual model that mimics the manual process of yielding and inventory management and overbooking, while the second utilizes the decision process of the installed or applied RMS. The author states that what Operator realize is the hidden maximization opportunity in both pricing and inventory controls based on manual processes reacting to demand conditions rather than anticipating. The value of this outside of the above application is how a KPI and a different manner of looking at the data can lead to valuable insight on what a real ROI can be. As an RM professional whom utilizes an advanced RMS on a regular basis it is sometimes it is difficult to see outside the box and perceive the value of the technology that is a mainstay in the Branded community. Being able to see the implications it can have for those not using or not having bought into the technology is actually a bit of a back step as it speaks to the value that this solution provides for the company.

6 Must-ask questions to consider before buying a PMS | By Stuart Dickinson - Hospitalit... - 0 views

  • A good PMS controls and automates a number of processes within a hotel, ideally reducing time-consuming tasks and inefficiencies within your operation.
  • It's not just about capturing bookings or keeping track of finance, but as technology evolves and expands, so does the need for your PMS to play an integral role in guest experience and loyalty management. Ideally, it should form the core of almost all hotel activity.
  • According to the 2016 Smart Decision Guide to Hotel Property Management Systems, the biggest benefits of having the right property management system include: Improved guest satisfaction and quality of the guest experience Streamlined hotel operations and reduced costs Increased hotel occupancy, revenue and profitability Improved performance reporting and business intelligence
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • A good PMS offers unprecedented visibility that allows you to take full control of your hotel's administration, and will come with a wide array of options when it comes to data report dashboards. Having said that, it's still important to find out what level of custom reporting is available to you before buying.
  • With the constant development of new technologies, having a PMS with a growing integration partner list is becoming more important. An integrated partner could be anything from a channel manager to a mobile app or online guest feedback system. Less integration opportunities could mean that you end up with data spread over a number of different applications, or having to settle for apps that don't serve your needs like they should.
  • It's important to have a clear understanding of the PMS platform's customer support process before making a buying decision. It's also important to consider what kind of training is provided to hotel staff who will be using the system for the first time. More than 80% of hoteliers agree that user training is a key success factor in getting the most out of a PMS.
  • Thanks to rapid developments in technology, PMS platforms today aren't nearly as expensive as their predecessors. However, whether you choose a cloud-based or traditional computer-based system for your hotel, it's important to find out if you'll be making any surprise payments down the road – some examples include future software updates, technical support, infrastructure or maintenance etc.
  • How much time your new PMS will save in terms of managing front desk activities, like check-ins and check-outs, consolidating guest accounts, and managing rates and availability across all of your different channels (OTAs, travel agents and so on) is a critical consideration to make.
  • Lastly, it's important to look at the company's track record before making a buying decision. Even if they've been in business for years, check their client base to determine how reliable they are. The last thing you want is to be promised the world, only to be let down by poor service delivery.
  • Does the solution offer flexibility in functionality, including data access and performance reporting? How easily and seamlessly does the PMS integrate with third-party technologies and data? How long will it take for problems to be resolved? What is the total cost of ownership? Are there "hidden" costs? What return on investment (ROI) can be expected? What is the PMS solution provider's track record of success?
  •
This article makes some key assertions regarding points of consideration when choosing a PMS software. Getting the right PMS software is absolutely critical for any property, as it is at the core of the operation. According to this author, the necessary considerations involve asking six questions: -Does the solution offer flexibility in functionality, including data access and performance reporting? -How easily and seamlessly does the PMS integrate with third-party technologies and data? -How long will it take for problems to be resolved? -What is the total cost of ownership? Are there "hidden" costs? -What return on investment (ROI) can be expected? -What is the PMS solution provider's track record of success? The inception of cloud computing and faster data processing has led to a number of choices in PMS software. Obviously these questions are not a fool-proof path to picking the perfect PMS software out of the multitude of options, but obviously being able to answer these with a level of confidence is a step in the right direction.

How Technology has Shaped the Hospitality Sector in 2019 - BW Hotelier - 0 views

  • hotels have started investing in personalisation and AI technologies that take guess-work out of the equation and automate the entire process of creating personalised guest experiences.
  • We’re seeing an increasing number of hotels recognize this reality, and begin to integrate technology with the service they provide to deliver a better guest experience.
  • cloud systems connect with each other more easily and can help hotels make data-backed smart decisions instead of relying on fragmented data of disparate systems.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • 94% of business travelers and 80% of leisure travelers appreciated the ability to request in-room services and message hotel staff using their own smartphones. 38% of guests chose to use tech platforms like a hotel concierge to search for food and beverage options, activities and more instead of searching the internet, or asking recommendations from hotel staff.
  • millennials have a decidedly digital approach to purchasing behavior, and this demand is a primary driving force behind the need for business to adopt relevant technologies to cater to these generations of travelers.
  • Now, guest expectations include the need for an experience rather than a service, the ability to personalize their stay, privacy of data and more.
  •
In "How Technology has Shaped the Hospitality Sector in 2019," author Pranjal Prashar believes that the use of certain technological advances, will allow hotels to provide exceptional guest experiences. Prashar states that there has been an increase in the number of hotels that have recognized new and innovative technologies and have started to implement these advances to deliver a better guest experience. One of the benefits of using such advances as the PMS and RMS systems is that it can help hotels make data- backed decisions. In today's world, guest expectations have moved from basic needs such as clean rooms to including the need of an experience says Prashar. With millennial's projected to overtake baby boomers as America's largest population, I believe it is vital that the hospitality industry as well as other industries invest in technology to stay in front of the curve.

Is 2020 the Year of the GDS? | By Scott Falconer - Hospitality Net - 2 views

  • Technology can play a major role in helping properties win more bookings, through advertisements, display, and keywords
  • It will be interesting to see how GDS usage and other distribution channels continue to evolve throughout 2020.
  • The overall contribution of GDS bookings indicates that it is still a very relevant and growing channel and often delivers the highest ADR.

  • However, certain keywords can and do drive them to book a property, such as "price", "offer", "rate" and "discount". Globally, 4 out of 10 survey respondents agree these types of words would encourage them to book.
  • In our survey, 7 out of 10 agents say it's important to include icons with the words "free" or "complimentary" in ads. In 2020, hoteliers should review their current strategy for the GDS and consider whether they are using the platform to its full potential.
  • Rate parity (ensuring that the same room is priced identically across all distribution channels) will continue to be of utmost importance.
  • Our research shows that 9 out of 10 travel agents rank rate parity as 'very important' or 'important' in their search.
  • When the GDS does not offer full rate parity, 6 out of 10 travel agents actively book away from that hotel property.
  • Travel agents are booking hotel reservations on the GDS in record numbers, from 42 million ten years ago to 79 million in 2019. On average, they book 22X more room nights than consumers, making the GDS a prime channel for hotels looking to increase revenue.

This article speaks on how GDS are doing in the age of 2020. Not only does it talk about how its doing over all but it also goes over how they remain successful with the new times. Keeping up with changing demands and trends.
  •
This article talks about how GDS system usage has been and continues to increase over the years. While many owners prefer direct bookings on their site. GDS has been increasing at a faster rate than other channels which are used by travel agents. Hotels need to e using the GDS platforms in 2020 and beyond to maximise the benefits that it brings.
  •
Scott Falconer's article, "Is 2020 the year of the GDS," entails discussion of the survey results of the DGS site as the most sued and rapidly growing site for booking by travel agents. Falconer also advises hotels and other travel agents to optimize the use of the GDS site to increase bookings and therefore profitability. In discussing the survey results, Falconers also suggests the GDS increase its potential by maintaining parity, observing prices, and promotions are critical in its continued growth. Falconer's finding first indicates that GDS usage has significantly grown in the past ten years. The author notes that by 2019, the number of travel agents using the site of GDS to make bookings had increased from 42 million to 79 million between 2009 and 2019 (Falconer). In the recent past, Falconer argues that the ratings and growth in usage of the site provide hotels with opportunities to grow revenue as the site makes 22 times more bookings than consumers. Through surveying with 900 travel agents, Falconer concluded that GDS is a prime channel for bookings because of its recent fast growth compared to other alternative booking sites. Secondly, Falconer notes that there is a need to stabilize the parity rates for the GDS channel to succeed. Based on the survey, most travel agents indicated that parity rates are influential to the decision to book a facility using the GDs site or others. Therefore, Falconer advises the GDS management to ensure the consistency of the price that properties offer to clients on other channels. The services listed in the sites are available as indicated at the property. In this case, the GDS can improve booking experience by clearly stating commissions, discounts, or cancellation policies at the site to increase the availability of information to the clients regarding the nature of commitment and expected services as the promised value. Falconer also highlights the importance of adver

We believe accounting serves a purpose beyond presenting the historical financial position of a hotel. Timely accounting information, properly presented, is information that management can use to improve future performance and compare income and expenses to past performance and future goals. Accounting data is processed using an offsite Application Service Provide (ASP) over the internet. This enables our hotels to input daily revenue and statistical data while accounts payable is processed regularly. The end result is that managers, owners and corporate staff can review financial data on line at any time over the internet using a web browser.

Do job seekers' social media profiles affect hospitality managers' hiring decisions? A ... - 0 views

  • Social media plays an ever-increasing role in recruitment and selection
  • Likewise, many hospitality businesses are now using social media as a powerful recruitment tool, which is believed to be cost-effective and can quickly generate candidates for vacancies
  • Although SMPs could provide additional valuable information to hiring managers, they found that Facebook ratings actually did not do a better job in predicting job candidates' future performance, such as supervisor ratings of job performance, turnover intentions, and their actual turnover than the more traditional predictors, including personality, cognitive ability, and self-efficacy.
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • Moreover, they disclosed that recruiters using Facebook ratings tended to favour female and white applications, raising cautions of whether organizations can legally justify using SMPs in screening candidates.
  • According to their findings, job candidates' SMPs can also reveal personal information prohibited by the U.S. employment law.
  • Contradicting other studies that suggest social media has been widely used in employee screening (e.g., Kluemper et al., 2012; Sameen & Cornelius, 2015), the informants in this study hold reservations of such practices due to privacy concerns
  • LinkedIn was used by 45% of the informants (M2, M3, M5, M6, & M9) in screening candidates, but nearly all (10 out of 11) of the informants said they did not screen candidates' profiles on other social media networks than LinkedIn.
  • While most informants did not admit they screen candidates based on their SMPs, they showed favour to the following posts shared by the candidates: pictures about food, catering, and events (M1, M2, M3, M9, & M11), news articles (M4, M6, M7, & M10), organizational social activities (M3, M6, M7, M8).
  • Specifically, the informants looked for extroversion (M1, M3, M6, & M10), professionalism (M2, M5, & M6), good match (M6, M8, & M10), conscientiousness (M5 & M7), and agreeableness (M1 & M8), supporting the hospitality literature about the Big Five personality traits
  • Contrary to the business reports that suggests social media plays an increasingly important role in recruitment and selection (e.g., Becton et al., 2019; Evuleocha & Ugbah, 2018; Kwok, 2011; Ladkin & Buhalis, 2016), our findings suggest that hiring managers in the hospitality industry are screening candidates' SMPs with caution primarily due to the concerns of legal compliance.
  •
This research article looks at how social media has been used in recruitment for the hospitality industry. It highlights that while it has become common practice, there are many layers of concerns including it violating certain legal rights of potential employees, generating biased decisions based on gender and race, and the practice not producing demonstrably better results than hirings done without reviewing potential employee Social Media Profiles (SMPs).

  • Using an MIS system can improve the performance of a company in many ways
  • Any organization that does not use MIS simply will not exist for long
  • Beyond the need to stay competitive, there are some key advantages of effective use of management information systems: Management can get an overview of their entire operation. Managers have the ability to get feedback about their performance. Organizations can maximize benefits from their investments by seeing what is working and what isn’t. Managers can compare results to planned performance by identifying strengths and weakness in both the plan and the performance. Companies can drive workflow improvements that result in better alignment of business processes to customer needs. Many business decisions are moved out of upper management to levels of the organization that is closer to where the knowledge and experience lie.
  •
This article explores the existence and significance of management information systems (MIS) in modern businesses. The article also explains the meaning of MIS, its types, and its benefits. Besides, the author explains how MIS can be improved.
  •
This is a great article in that it does certainly measure productivity of the industry's work force. Perhaps it will take a few years for any one who does not use the system to fail as a business, but I feel that it is more depending on the size of the business and caliber of the business itself. A little mom and pop business may not need MIS if they have established themselves and already created a brand within their community. Although a new place that is opening with a brand which is not established, MIS is perfect for them so they can cater to the clientele and become profitable by collecting data of things such as "repeat guests", "common items bought when", "trending combinations of items bought"- given what the business is and what it is selling. Overall, MIS is a very good tool to assist in building a brand either from scratch or bringing its profitability to the next level; therefore allowing the business to stay competitive.

What a perfect analogy - the MIS can be compared to the role of the heart in the body. While large corporations are able to afford this, what I would consider a luxury in my world, I think most Executives or Directors find themselves playing this role without the desire to, or the recognition - and of course not to the level a MIS can produce/process I am sure. The MIS holds so much weight, it really could make or break your fiscal year should the wrong decision be made. This article is great at summing up such an important and not really spoken about position.

Thank you for the great read. I enjoy how the article compares the MIS function to the heart in the body. With this direct comparison, we see how important MIS is to an organization. • Merchants that integrate the Banked and Avios checkout option stand to gain increased customer loyalty, conversion rates and a higher average order value.
  • With 78% of consumers making purchasing decisions based on loyalty points, being able to offer Avios through the Banked network will help our merchants increase conversion rates and improve customer loyalty
  •
Fintech startup company, Banked, has partnered with British Airways to provide a new and effective form of payment for their airline loyalty members to pay for online purchases using BA Avios. BA Executive Club members can now use their bank account via Banked and merchants will be able to offer the Avios option at a fraction of the cost of credit card processing fees. (2-4% vs 0.1%) This new partnership will lead to increased customer loyalty, conversion rates along with higher average order value. Banked is currently integrated with may of the largest banks in the United Kingdom, including Barclays and HSBC. Banked CEO stated that 78% of consumers in the UK are making purchasing decisions based on loyalty points, which will extremely increase customer loyalty from the British Airways Executive Club members. In my opinion, this is an excellent way for loyalty club members, especially airline and hotel rewards members, to be able to utilize their points or miles that have been of no use due to the pandemic. This has already been integrated in the United States through Chase, American Express, and Citibank where rewards points can be used for purchases online and even on Amazon. This was the correct step for BA because they will be able to retain loyal customers until travel restrictions are lightened.

This provides some insight into artificual intelligence with a primary focus on developments in digital marketing. I especially found this helpful because it discusses analyzing large amounts of data that we as humans cannot make fair and unbiased decisions on. This is similar to the revenue management systems in use today. It also discusses the role fo chatbots in marketing. The article also ends with a few case studies.
  • Menial and redundant tasks like data entry, segregating leads from a marketing campaign, and responding to FAQs by customers can be easily handed over to chatbots and AI.
  • a machine learning model estimating the likelihood that a customer will churn can uncover factors driving churn rates and enable decision-makers to change business strategies and processes.

  • By analyzing data, AI can easily predict the purchasing behavior and decision-making of target customers, improve user experience, and provide customers with what they really need.
  • AI is unlocking the potential of hyper-personalization through personalized product recommendations, intelligent content recommendations, and customer support suggestions.
  • According to a recent survey, 71% of marketing respondents say that brands do not understand consumer fundamentals. Therefore, 66% of marketers said they want brands to invest more to build customer awareness and relationships.
  • You no longer need to invest your time into menial tasks like responding to repetitive queries or FAQs to market yourself and your business because AI assistants like AmazonEcho can do it for you.

  • Managing risks properly will require an empowered IT leadership that is given a say in strategic decision-making processes – something you'd might assume is a given, but continues to be a complaint among tech leaders.
  • "Higher-wage and more skilled staff are required to develop modern SaaS applications, so organizations will be challenged as hiring is reduced to control costs," wrote Sid Nag, vice president analyst at Gartner.

As spending on cloud services jumps up almost 21% from last year, everything seems to be positive for this fast growing technology. It is, however, facing some challenges along the way that companies are going to need to take into consideration when spending on these services. Making sure they have a well qualifies and capable team to keep these services secure without burning them out is one of the concerns employees are bringing up in recent conversations. The security and safety of the data held by these services is very important, and needs to be prioritized in the day to day decisions made by all companies that utilize these services. Threats and malicious code taken advantage of by hackers is ever growing, and requires a constant, educated team with empowerment to protect to constantly watch out for these threats. Cloud computing still continues to grow, and is still a great advancement in business, but it also still needs to have it's threats carefully assessed and addressed to make sure it remains secure.
