  • Approximately 15 to 25 percent of guests who book rooms at participating hotels engage with Flip.to, and for every 100 engaged guests, an average of 10 to 20 additional room nights are booked within six months.
  •
Hotel Concepts- Brilliant, a leading global provider of advanced PMS, recently announced its integration of Flip.to into RezExchange. For a small monthly subscription, Flip.to acts as marketing platform for hotels, restaurants, and airports. Customers can use it to comment, post feedback, and recommend the establishment to friends who in turn can get discounts. It also allows loyal guests and customers incentives to spread the word. RezExchange allows customers to manage their sales channels directly from the hotel management system and will receive all reservations from these channels directly into their own database. With this integration customers don't have to present printed coupons and any earned incentives are automatically credited to their hotel profiles. Hotels, restaurants, and airports that already use RezExchange and integrate Flip.to into their system will become more streamlined making it that much easier for customers and guests to build up and use their incentives.   L'Auberge Carmel hotel in California is the first property to go live with this integration and thus far, this integration has proved successful. Approximately 15 to 25 percent of guests who book rooms at participating hotels engage with Flip.to, and for every 100 engaged guests, an average of 10 to 20 additional room nights are booked within six months.

Cornell Center for Hospitality Research Examines Daily Deals and Sustainability Issues - 0 views

  • A survey of nearly 200 international hotel operators found generally favorable results for those that had offered a daily deal, also known as a flash deal, according to a study posted by the Cornell Center for Hospitality Research.
  • Piccoli and Dev found that Groupon and LivingSocial were the two sites used most heavily by these respondents, and their top reasons for offering a deal were branding, customer acquisition, and boosting occupancy in shoulder periods. Ironically, the hotels that were avoiding daily deals were especially concerned about compromising brand standards.
  • David Jerome, senior vice president of corporate responsibility at InterContinental Hotels Group, three critical myths are (1) that "green" is expensive, when in fact sustainable practices save money; (2) guests do not care about sustainability, when in fact many guests and group planners specifically look for "green" practices; and (3) hospitality firms can wait to implement sustainability programs, when in fact waiting is costing them both money and business.
  •
This article comments on the perceived effectiveness of daily "flash" deals distributed through the internet to provoke the usage of services of a hospitality enterprise. It also addresses current industry challenges hotels face with regards to sustainability and corporate social responsibility. The first Cornell study surveyed approximately two hundred international hotels. The results showed half of the hotels have used the e-Marketing "flash" deals technique while the other half abstain siting concerns of brand reputation. However the issue of dissatisfaction from those hotels who use daily deals is also prevalent. The conductors of the study recommend those who use the deals to "start small," clearly define the reason for the deal and examine every aspect of the deal, including limitations, to increase ROI and satisfaction. If the deals are tailored to fit both the hotel and guests' needs they should attract and retain customers. The roundtable discussion then dives into an important branding issue of CSR. It highlights common misconceptions related to sustainability such as going "green" being being costly, guests not appreciating sustainable efforts, and the "wait and see" approach being smart for implementation. With education and communication the hospitality industry can inform their internal and external customers of their sustainable business practices and increase customer acquisition. Rather than being reactive, businesses should be proactive and concentrate on their "long-term brand focus."

How is personal data tracked and sold? | SmartPlanet - 0 views

  •
This article describes how third party companies are able to track and record consumer information and sell to companies. The way these companies gather the information is done when social media users sign in to their accounts via their mobile device. The information gathered by these companies are: the user's number, data that has been transmitted, the size of the data, the time and the date. Depending on the mobile carrier, this information is held for a specific amount of time. In my opinion, I think this is very valuable information for companies but there has to be some sort of legal regulations to ensure that the information is not misused, lost, or hacked. If companies wish to have access to this information, they should and must be willing to pay a significant amount of money for it.
  •
Is this similar to Google releasing the information when consumers use their search platforms? Unlike the old days when consumers read the fine print to calm their suspicions, I fear everything being done on any mobile device is free game without any warning. I agree there should be some legal regulations.

Reflecting on the Future for B2B Email | ClickZ - 0 views

  • email certainly remains the king of the digital channels, with an installed base of email accounts growing to 3.1 billion in 2011 and expected to grow to nearly 4.1 billion accounts by 2015.
  • corporate email accounts will increase faster than consumer email accounts because of the growth of affordable cloud-based email services.
  • Subscribers have begun to expect you to keep the conversation going via social media and mobile channels. Witness the increased activity for B2B users on LinkedIn, Twitter, and other social networks and likely on your own corporate blog, too.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Emailing without permission can taint their impression of your brand. They can slam you and your brand in social media channels even if you meet legal minimum standards.
  •
It is clear that email is one of the most effective and efficient ways of reaching out to your consumers directly, however there are always the ups and downs to this form of marketing. It is predicted that by 2015 there will be an increase of nearly 4.1 billion email accounts compared to the 3.1 billion email accounts as of 2011.   The most common form businesses used email marketing was to send out newsletters, coupons, ads, alerts, etc., now consumers also are looking for more interaction with the business through social media. They want instant responses through Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs and other social networks.  With using all the social networking sites in relation to the business, consumers can also see other consumer reviews.  Using these forms of communication for the business and client, helps to build their customer relationship with each other. As businesses track the movement of their website and emails by monitoring what the consumer clicks on, they gather information on what the consumer is looking for and can then cater to their needs. As positive as social media can be for a company, it can also be negative with bad user reviews and complaints.  Word of mouth is the fastest marketing tool for consumers when they have a bad review.

Industry Pulse Poll Analysis: the Numbers Prove Hotel Mobile Websites are a C... - 0 views

  • Smartphone use continues to rise this year, especially in regards to using smartphones to participate in social media channels. 2012 has truly been the year of SoLoMo and hoteliers are acting accordingly by focusing on mobile initiatives such as website development.
  • According to a HeBS Digital Industry Pulse Poll performed last month, hoteliers are more interested in mobile website development than any other aspect of mobile marketing, including mobile app development, mobile banner advertising and other initiatives
  • As HeBS Digital President & CEO Max Starkov wrote in his “Hotelier’s 2012 Mobile Marketing MUST Dos and Don’ts,” developing and maintaining a quality mobile website is much more important than building, maintaining and promoting a more labor-intensive mobile app
  •
Since more people are using smartphone and the number of people using mobile devices keeps rising, hoteliers are trying to focus more on mobile marketing, especially on establishing completed mobile website. Based on a survey, 60% hoteliers are interested in mobile website marketing. More and more hoteliers realize that establishing mobile apps are not that efficient and it becomes an unnecessary expense. Considering cost and revenue, hoteliers have to balance mobile marketing and traditional marketing methods.

How EBay Failed In China - Forbes - 0 views

  • In 2004, eBay had just entered China and was planning to dominate the China market. Alibaba was a local Chinese company that helped small- and medium-sized enterprises conducting business online.
  • As a defensive strategy, Ma decided to launch a competing consumer-to-consumer (C2C) auction site, not to make money, but to fend off eBay from taking away Alibaba’s customers.
  • While visiting Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou, I felt the same “insanely great” energy of entrepreneurship as I felt in Silicon Valley.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • A new Web site named Taobao—meaning “digging for treasure”
  • Knowing that most small business people would rather watch TV than log on to the Internet, Ma secured advertisements for Taobao on major TV channels.
  • Unlike eBay EachNet, which charged its sellers for listing and transaction fees, Taobao was free to use.
  • According to a Morgan Stanley report, Taobao was more customer focused and user friendly than eBay EachNet.
  • Taobao had also better terms for its customers: it offered longer listing periods (fourteen days) and let customers extend for one more period automatically. EBay EachNet did not have this flexibility.
  •
This is a very interesting article. As a Chinese teenager, I can experience all the changes and development of Taobao and how it won Chinese market that the author mentioned in this article. eBay can be successful in an international market, while failed rapidly in Chinese market. Firstly we can see how competitive the online market is. After this we also want to ask why eBay was beaten in China? The author of this article listed four reasons: 1) Compared with eBay, Taobao has better marketing strategies in dealing with local market. At the beginning, Taobao promoted itself through TV ads and later used short messages, which were more popular than Internet in China. 2) Taobao has less limitations on buyers and sellers through the whole process. For instance Taobao charges no listing and transaction fees on its sellers and it's free to register as a user in Taobao 3) Products made in China gives Taobao more chances to sell goods in competitive price. 3)Taobao has better terms for its customers, which helps it o to earn a good reputation and also makes Taobao more flexible in customer service. 4) The way that Taobao lists its items are more customer centric and adaptable to Chinese customers' tastes. E-commerce can bring unlimited chances and is full of adventures. As for me, marketing skills, excellent customer service and high-tech are the same important for a company if it wants to increase the share of market and makes profit. Taobao can be set as a good example in e-commerce history.

New website lets hotels bid for your business - 0 views

  •
A very interesting website that allows users to post an existing hotel reservation and then receive "bids" from other hotels in the area to give the user better offers and deals. It essentially allows the hotels to pursue customers, allowing them to take advantage of offers such as upgrades and amenities. As mentioned in the article, the website is very user friendly and transparent - allowing users to get a good feel for the hotels that are "bidding" on them. I believe this website is a very interesting and creative application. The company has put an innovative twist on e-marketing that allows for the user to feel "wanted" by the hotels. By giving a customer so many options, they are able to create a competitive lodging market and hopefully, in turn increase profits in the industry.

Was hotel marketing always this complicated? Part Two of Three - GDS consolidation and ... - 0 views

  • These four GDS vendors controlled the marketing and distribution channel for the entire industry. They had market power and could impose higher fees at a whim on both the agent and airline. At the same time airlines sought ways to lower their distribution costs.
  • For the most part the hotel industry did not have the coordination or the moxie to fight like the airlines and simply paid the higher distribution fees and travel agent commissions.
  • But the larger effect was that the travel agency industry was shrinking; in a short period of time hotels saw their traditional distribution channels dry up. No longer were agents sending customers to the hotels.

  • The arrival of the internet as a commercial device only accelerated the demise of the travel agency business. Of the nearly 40,000 independent travel agencies in existence, less than a third still exist today.
  • In 2001, the early years of our hospitality consultancy, general managers walked through our doors describing their online marketing strategy as “having a static online hotel brochure, email, and Expedia“.
  • The catchphrase “direct online distribution strategy” described the new world order in hospitality. Yet hotel managers were slow to embrace the idea that they would soon be entirely responsible for the marketing, sales, and distribution of their hotel inventory.
  • hotels locked themselves into OTA contracts that required steep discounts, ever-increasing inventory, and multi-year agreements. To this day OTAs resemble GDS-like oligopolistic behavior.
  •
This article introduced how GDS controlled the whole industry in the last decades. Most airline companies and hotels use GDS and the traditional distribution channels and travel agencies dry up. But after 2001, things become different. Hotels need to do marketing and distribution by themselves to survive. But many of them are not professional, so they lock themselves into OTA contracts. They need reinvented hotel marketer by themselves.
