What Arne Duncan Thinks of No Child Left Behind - US News and World Report - 0 views

  • creating better student assessments, and improving teacher quality
    • Ed Webb

Well, sure - but the devil's in the detail, as always. If better assessment means fewer standardized tests, then I'm sure we're all for it, right? And if improving teacher quality means giving teachers more time and space and less bureaucracy, then great. But I suspect he may not mean what I wish he meant.
  • dummy those standards down
  • rebrand
    • Ed Webb

      Because rebranding changes everything, right?
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • the problem by developing better tests.
    • Mr. Carver

So apparently they are not going to revise much, just change the company writing the tests.

Vimeo, Video Sharing For You - 1 views

  •
This is a great video sharing site. I love the features, especially the ability to password protect AND embed else. The pricing is incredible and well worth it for classrooms that produce a lot of video. Check Vimeo out! Excellent community and some neat movie challenges that could be used at the high school level

Pterosaur.net :: Home - 19 views

  •
From the site: "This website was conceived at the 2007 Flugsaurier pterosaur research meeting in Munich when we, a collection of pterosaur researchers and artists directly working with us realised that there was no comprehensive, high quality website dedicated to this popular group of prehistoric animals. This acts in stark contrast to a number of excellent dinosaur-based websites and, frankly, we couldn't quite figure out why when pterosaurs are equally famous, popular and, in some respects, better known than their dinosaur cousins. With this in mind, we set out to create a pterosaur based website that: figure * Presents up-to-date information on pterosaurs in an accessible fashion * Sources information from the primary scientific literature * Is written by qualified, experienced pterosaur researchers * Can reflect the active research occuring in pterosaur science * Provides professionally produced pterosaur art and photographs of pterosaur specimens"

OATS - oats - 29 views

  •
Open-sourcing offers great potential for AT software users. However, currently there are a number of barriers that stop its wider use within the AT community. It is generally difficult to find on the Internet and, until the OATS Project, there have been no specific websites dedicated to developing or downloading AT software. Open-source software can also be unfriendly to install, often obliging the user to download many different packages before it can be set up and used. Often it is still "under-development", poorly documented or technically demanding, something that the end user finds frustrating and irritating. To see just how complicated this can be for the lay enquirer, one need only visit the most well-known source of mainstream open-source products, Source Forge (http://sourceforge.net/). Finding OATS products here is like experiencing death by a thousand cuts! The OATS Project's repository will strip away all the technical complexity and provide via its database and search engine an efficient and intuitive way to access good quality OATS. By removing these barriers to open-source AT software, users will not only have a single point of contact for obtaining open-source software but volunteer developers will also discover a forum where they can develop ideas and write software that meets the real needs of specific end users.

MHS Lip Dub to "Firework" - 16 views

  •
Magnolia High School (Magnolia, TX), which happens to be where I went to high school once upon a time, created a very cool and inspiring lip dub to Katy Perry's "Firework". The quality is not amazing or high tech, but it doesn't matter. Watch the students. See how much fun they had. The sense of pride and community is almost tangible.

It suggests courses with simulations, with constant feedback, and with interactive software that can tailor instruction and tutoring to individual students. It likes courses that students can use to teach themselves. And it demands open access to everything: "All online and technology-enabled courses must permit free public use and distribution, including the ability to re-use course modules, via an online repository for learning materials to be established by the federal government.... That's because the government is requiring that all work supported by the grants be made available under what's known as a "Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License," which Mr. Green described as 'one of the most open content licenses that exists.'"

In an Iranian Image, a Missile Too Many - NYTimes.com - 29 views

  • In a sentiment no doubt echoed by news organizations everywhere, an MSNBC editor acknowledged that the four-missile picture was initially welcomed with open arms. “As the media editor working the msnbc.com home page yesterday, I was frustrated with the quality of a fuzzy video image we published of the Iranian missile launch,” said Rich Shulman, the network’s associate multimedia editor. “So I was thrilled when the top image crossed the news wires.”
