Immersed In Too Much Information, We Can Sometimes Miss The Big Picture : All Tech Cons... - 48 views

Although we find ourselves as travelers in the age of over sharing, it turns out we remain quite adept at avoiding the really tough topics.

Google’s Eric Schmidt recently stated that every two days we create as much information as we did from the beginning of civilization through 2003. Perhaps the sheer bulk of data makes it easier to suppress that information which we find overly unpleasant. Who’s got time for a victim in Afghanistan or end-of-life issues with all these Tweets coming in?

Between reality TV, 24-hour news, and the constant hammering of the stream, I am less likely to tackle seriously uncomfortable topics. I can bury myself in a mountain of incoming information. And if my stream is any indication, I’m not alone. For me, repression used to be a one man show. Now I am part of a broader movement — mass avoidance through social media.

The Principal of Change - 27 views

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world." Gandhi I am an advocate of change. Change to me is about growth and learning. Change to me is about getting better. The hard part for many is that change is also about reflection. Taking a hard look at what you are doing and wondering if it is good enough is a tough practice. Taking the next step and CHANGING the practice is even harder as some take it as a sign of things that were not done right. I see it as growth. Although there is the type of DRASTIC change that happened in Rhode Island where all the teachers were fired, but that is not what I am talking about. I can ALWAYS get better and so can you. That is how I want to change.

Rookie head of science - toughest year yet? by @secretsciteach - 6 views

"Starting in the final term before I officially started in September was tough. I wasn't anticipating having such a full teaching timetable and my own classes were incredibly unsettled. I found it difficult to establish myself as an average science teacher let alone attempt to lead a department. I was seriously considering if I had made the right move! I remember one student in what I thought was a difficult Year 9 class saying "sir why don't you go and get the head of science" to which I replied "I am the head of Science!"."

So with all of this confusion, many ask why it is hard for people to accept change.
-
The problem with this is that people are more comfortable with what they know and have experienced, as opposed to what “could be”. The other issue here is that if we cannot clearly articulate examples of powerful learning, why would anyone buy “change” in the first place?
-
It is clear to the world that something just isn’t working with institutional education and most people say that we need to CHANGE institutional education. But to the educators of the world, I am here today to say that I disagree. You don’t need to change anything, you simply need to understand that the world is changing, and if you don’t change with it, the world will decide that it doesn’t need you anymore.
