Teachers Can Do Harm | transformED - 51 views

• Teaching is a professional craft. Thinking that any high-scoring college student could come in and excel demeans it as a profession. No one would consider letting smart English majors perform surgery on low-income patients, or allowing cum laude math majors to do legal work for poor clients.
• Stuffing under-prepared rookies’ ears with confidence and sending them into the fray doesn’t have a net neutral impact on our students or our national conversation on education.

BYOD is the "most radical shift" in the workplace since the PC - 2 views

•
Last year, research firm Gartner heralded the bring-your-own-device, or BYOD, phenomenon as the "most radical shift in enterprise client computing since the introduction of the PC." Such headlines often smack of hyperbole but so far, BYOD has lived up to expectations. If we are preparing students for the world of work, BYOD has to be part of that. Companies are experiencing the same challenges that schools are.

A truly amazing Apple App for learning maths. Download the host or client app to your Apple device and set maths quizzes to complete in real time together in class. The apps communicate through a wireless network or Bluetooth and the host device tracks and keeps all the data for each quiz so you can see where your class need to improve. To set questions you just turn the sections on or off and the app chooses questions from these at random. http://ictmagic.wikispaces.com/Maths

The proposed DSM-5 changes with regard to ASD | Autism Support Network - 30 views

•
The American Psychiatric Association (www.apa.org) is responsible for writing and publication of the DSM. At the bottom of this blog find their proposed changes to autism spectrum disorders (ASD), as copied from their website. In a nutshell, effective with the release of DSM-5 in May 2013 we will change the way we describe autism-related disabilities to the singular "Autism Spectrum Disorder." Clients will no longer be diagnosed as having "autism" versus "PDD-NOS" or "Asperger Syndrome" as all of these different classifications will officially go away. However, individuals with ASD will be referred to as having one of three severity levels (see chart at end). When is it in the public interest to do something unethical and unprofessiona... - 27 views

• When is it a matter of legitimate and compelling public interest to do something unethical and unprofessional?
•
'Blowing the whistle' on wrongdoing, misconduct or incompetence is usually considered heroic. There have been some celebrated cases in the last couple of years of people who have done it , with mixed success. Nurses and teachers for example, have found themselves in front of disciplinary panels of their professional bodies for taking hidden cameras in to their workplace and secretly filming their clients - the patients and students they believed were getting a poor deal.

NOTE: 1849 has information primarily from 1839 except first highlighted yellow section
• Indirect elections are “in use between 1840 and 1872. Indirect elections enhanced the political power of the hacendados, because voting districts often coincided directly with the boundaries of haciendas. The first stage of an indirect election, when voters gathered to choose electors, occurred in the cantones, the administrative sub-units of a municipality. Cantones often were made up of nothing more than one or two haciendas, giving landowners a clear advantage to control the selection of electores. Above and beyond all other aspects of the electoral system, the oral vote [in use until 1950] insured the predominance of patron-client relations” (pages 65-66). Describes process for recording oral votes. “Throughout the nineteenth century, national politics followed to a great extent the rise and fall of alliances between departmental networks. For instance, in the mid 1840s San Vicente and San Miguel were allied against Sonsonate and San Salvador” (page 163).
El SalvadorAcronyms1811-18491850-18991900-19341935-19691970-19791980-19891990-19992000-2009More than one electionSources UC San Diego 9500 Gilman Dr. La Jolla,
