Depth of Knowledge | Rethinking Learning - Barbara Bray - 81 views

  • DOK is about... what FOLLOWS the verb. What comes after the verb is more important than the verb itself. the complexity of mental processing that must occur to complete a task.   DOK is NOT about... verbs. The verbs are a valuable guide, but they can sometimes be used at more than one level. the difficulty of what they are learning. All levels of DOK have a place in a rigorous curriculum.

Mini-Activity: Take a look at the DOK Wheel--can you identify some verbs that are cross-level? How might they 'look' at each level?
  • Norman Webb identified four levels for assessing the DOK of content standards and assessment items. Level 1: Recall Level 2: Skill or Concept Level 3: Strategic Thinking Level 4: Extended Thinking
  • DOK implies the interaction of how deeply a student needs to understand the content with different ways of responding and interacting with the content.

4 Steps to Empower Student Voice | The Remind Blog - 39 views

  • The term “student voice” refers to the input and perspectives of students, and describes how their voices and actions affect what happens in the classroom. Through developing their own questions, seeking out their interests, and driving their own learning, students become more involved in their education. With this involvement comes empowerment, as students are able to use their knowledge to contribute to the greater community.
  • 1. Inclusion When students feel that they matter and are included in the classroom community, they are much more likely to open up and share their perspectives.
  • 2. Integration Begin to integrate student voice into your daily lessons by creating more opportunities for students to contribute. This can come in the form of whole classroom discussion, small group activities, input on writing activities, and more

  • At the transformational level, teachers can draw on student input to shape curricular goals for the class.
  • Student empowerment enables students to use their knowledge to contribute to the classroom and greater outside community. When students feel comfortable sharing their voices, they grow into positions of leadership.
  • Resources Encourage student voice in your classroom and school community with some of these helpful resources: Student Voice: Student Voice has toolkit filled with classroom resources, student voice stories, and more that will allow you to transform your classroom into one where students can thrive. Michael Sigman: When Everyone Gets a Trophy, No One Wins - 61 views

  • "A" grades, which once conveyed excellence, are now given to 43 percent of all college students, according to a study by grade-inflation gurus Stuart Rojstaczer and Christopher Healy.
  • a scandalous 86 percent of private school students, it turns out, get nothing lower than a "B."
  • the vast majority of all private school children are virtually guaranteed to be above average.

  • Grade inflation promotes ego inflation, the opposite of healthy self-confidence. "We want to encourage effort, especially among young kids," says Jean M. Twenge, author of The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement. "But the 'everybody gets a trophy' mentality basically says that you're going to get rewarded just for showing up. That won't build true self-esteem; instead, it builds this empty sense of 'I'm just fantastic, not because I did anything but just because I'm here.'"

Take a minute to share your thanks for one (or a bunch) of your favorite teachers and what they inspired you to do. Brownie points for sending your story along to them! (We've got a feeling they'd love to hear from you too.) Excellent tool to use with students to enhance writing and social emotional development
