  • Did you receive a gift of a new iPad this year? If so, you’re probably spending this holiday vacation week trying out all kinds of new apps. Here are ten that I recommend getting started with. Evernote is the Swiss Army knife of iPad apps. I use Evernote for
  • a little bit of everything from bookmarking websites to dictating notes to myself. The app automatically syncs with my online Evernote account so that I can access my notes, bookmarks, and saved files from any computer or device that is connected to the web. Learn more in the video below.

  •
Economics is a tough subject to learn about, and this website aims to make it easier to understand. We The Economy is a great tool for teaching economics in a flipped classroom. Have students watch one video for homework, and discuss it together in class. Start with "What is the Economy" and make your way to "Supply & Dance, Man!" and "GDP Smackdown."

I've Got Research. Yes, I Do. I've Got Research. How About You? | Donalyn Miller - 53 views

  •
I'm frequently asked to substantiate with research my opinions about independent reading. I don't mind. The research is ubiquitous and it doesn't take me much time to find it. While I am happy to provide websites, journal articles, and book recommendations for colleagues seeking more information about reading research, I often wonder why people ask for it. Does anyone go to the basketball coach and ask her to provide research to support why players are running plays and practicing shots? Does anyone go to the band director and ask him why musicians are playing their instruments during band class?

Teacher Librarian » Blog Archive » Web 2.0 Tool Review: Diigo - 0 views

  • Other people with similar interest would also be able to see your highlights. Diigo also allows a group of people to pool findings through group bookmarks, highlights, sticky notes and forums. Diigo has groups that are already formed. You can join any Diigo group for collaborative research. People are also using Diigo by posting to their blog depending on tags. For me the best feature is the highlighting of the website. As we all know, research on the internet can be overwhelming. The highlighting feature makes it much easier. Not only do I have favorite websites bookmarked but I also have certain parts highlighted on that website. Educators can join the education group to search the web for anything that can help them with their classrooms. I also think that teachers can use Diigo to teach students how to do research. Better yet, educators can teach them how to do some collaborative research.

Eric Mazur on new interactive teaching techniques - 19 views

  • “Some people talk in their sleep. Lecturers talk while other people sleep.”
  • they create the illusion of teaching for teachers, and the illusion of learning for learners
  • Sitting passively and taking notes is just not a way of learning. Yet lectures are 99 percent of how we teach!

  • Websites and laptops have been around for years now, but we haven’t fully thought through how to integrate them with teaching so as to conceive of courses differently.
  • “In the standard approach, the emphasis in class is on the first, and the second is left to the student on his or her own, outside of the classroom
  • you have to flip that, and put the first one outside the classroom, and the second inside
  • We have to train people to tackle situations they have not encountered before. Most instructors avoid this like the plague, because the students dislike it. Even at Harvard, we tend to keep students in their comfort zone. The first step in developing those skills is stepping into unknown territory.
  • hey’d much rather sit there and listen and take notes. Some will say, ‘I didn’t pay $47,000 to learn it all from the textbook. I think you should go over the material from the book, point by point, in class.’
  • It’s no accident that most elementary schools are organized that way.

  • Perhaps the key is to coax students not only out of their rooms, but into each other’s minds.
