The British government is doubling down on the notion that open data can be a catalyst for increased government transparency, civic utility and economic prosperity. Patrice Leroux: Quel avenir pour l'éducation supérieure ? - 0 views

  •
"Le secteur de la formation - et l'enseignement en général - subiront et subissent en ce moment même des bouleversements importants, au même titre que les industries de l'imprimé et de la musique dans les années 2000. Les établissements d'enseignement et même les centres de formation professionnelle qui ne réussiront pas à s'adapter aux nouvelles réalités de diffusion des savoirs (et à leur accès) risquent de devenir obsolètes à court et à moyen terme."

How to Tell if You're an Entrepreneur [VIDEO] - 0 views

  •
"tarting a business is not for everyone. You need a strong constitution and the ability to face failure. Because if statistics are any guide, you will likely fail. But the web makes it easier for first-time entrepreneurs to tap into that spirit of risk. What do these go-getters have in common? They likely started a "business" in childhood (a lemonade stand, a paper route, etc.). They've likely used their own money to fund their dreams (and are likely to have maxed-out credit cards, as a result). And they are less averse to risk than the average human. Check out this video by OnlineMBA.com for insight into the mind of the entrepreneur."

Microsoft patent application shows Holodeck-style "immersive display" | Ars Technica - 0 views

  •
"A newly published patent application shows Microsoft potentially planning to take console gaming beyond the barriers of the TV screen by projecting a "peripheral image" around a room, providing a 360-degree view of a virtual scene. Microsoft's patent application for an "immersive display experience" was published by the US Patent Office last week after being filed back in early 2011. It describes a standard video game system with a connected "environmental display" capable of projecting a panoramic image that "appears to surround the user.""

Oculus Rift head-mounted display finds funding from developers | Ars Technica - 0 views

  •
"The idea of a mass-market virtual reality headset that totally immerses players in a game world died out pretty quickly in the '90s, a time when the technology wasn't quite up to the heady concept. Now, a hardware designer named Palmer Luckey thinks that technology has finally caught up with the dream, and seems to have done a good job convincing a lot of game designers that he's right. Luckey's head-mounted display, the Oculus Rift, launched on Kickstarter today after first being previewed at E3. The device quickly surpassed it's $300,000 funding goal (approaching $600,000 at the time of this writing), primarily by selling $300 development kits to thousands of backers. Those developers include id Software's John Carmack, (who'll be bringing Doom 3 BFG as the first game to support the headset), Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski, Unity CEO Dave Helgason and Valve president and owner Gabe Newell, who offered up supportive quotes on Rift's potential for truly immersive virtual reality."

"Les platines ? C'est dépassé ! Mixer en digital, avec son corps, et en projection murale : voilà à quoi pourrait ressembler le travail d'un DJ du futur. C'est en tout cas le surprenant concept qu'explore le V Motion Project, une collaboration entre des designers, des programmeurs, des musiciens et des animateurs réunis autour de l'agence digitale Assembly : ici, grâce aux capteurs de mouvements de la Kinect, le corps d'un danseur devient un instrument de musique par la magie d'une nouvelle interface.  "

Augmented Reality Is The Story Of Projection Mapping And Its Rise | The Creators Project - 0 views

  •
Projection mapping has officially become an essential skill for any audiovisual artist. The technique, which involves the projection of 3D motion graphics onto the surface of a three-dimensional form, can transform static objects using only light. The result is stunning-the exterior of the form appears alive with the projected animation, transforming it into a dynamic object. Because of the possibilities it opens up for interactive experiences, this technique is rapidly gaining popularity with visual artists and musicians like Lumpens and Amon Tobin. In his short documentary, Augmented Reality, Belgian filmmaker Dane Luttik provides an overview of projection mapping. Featuring works by Creator AntiVJ and Jean-Michel Verbeeck, the film offers insight on the process of projection mapping and its significance to art, music, and technology.

Video Games: An Industry in Flux [INFOGRAPHIC] - 0 views

  •
Video games aren't going anywhere. But where and how we play them has shifted dramatically in recent years, thanks in large part to the smartphone explosion. Sales of physical media are down after a peak in 2008 - no surprise there. But despite the proliferation of apps and digital delivery systems like Steam, Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network, discs still drive the majority of the industry's revenue, and consoles remain strong. But tides are slowly turning. In 2011, it was a 69% / 31% split on physical vs. digital downloads.
