  • In today’s highly competitive job market, creating the right video resume to accompany your traditional CV can make you stand out from the crowd. The wrong one, though, can make you a laughing stock.

  • Don’t just create a video resume because you can, create one because it’s relevant to the job you want to do.

    If you’re applying for a role in the online, media, social or creative professions, then it’s more likely a decent video resume will have the desired effect, i.e., getting you invited for an interview.

    Don’t send a video resume to a more traditional type of company that won’t “get it.” You might do your chances more harm than good.

    Graeme Anthony, from the example above, is a public relations executive. His cleverly thought out online content adds an extra wow factor to his already outstanding experience.

    2. Don’t Just Read Out Your Resume

    The whole point of a video presentation is to offer a potential employer greater insight into you than a traditional resume can, so

    just reading aloud the contents of your CV is a waste of everyone’s time.

    Use the video to help the employer get a sense of not just what you have achieved, but what you are capable of achieving in the future.

    “Tell them why you would be the right person to hire and what you can do for them,” says Mario Gedicke, account manager at Mayomann.com, a video employment platform.

    You can, however, highlight particularly relevant info from your resume. “Focus on your experience and skill set (and possible education/training) especially relevant to the position,” advises Tyler Redford, CEO of resumebook.tv, an online resume management system.

    And if it’s appropriate and relevant to the job (as in the example above), then don’t be afraid to talk about your passions.

    3. Keep it Short

    “Keep your video resume short,” says Gedicke, who advises that a

    one-minute mark is ideal. Redford agrees that a video resume should be “short and sweet.” He suggests staying within two minutes.

    “Keep in mind that recruiters would likely want to use the video resume as an initial filter for applicants,” Redford says. “However, recruiters do not typically want to use the video resume in lieu of a real, in-person interview.”

    Think of your video resume as your own personal teaser trailer. In the example above, the clip is less than one minute and 20 seconds in length, while the extra time is made up of a

    bloopers reel accompanied with credits, a clever way to show off your personality (and that you don’t take yourself too seriously).

    4. Don’t Be Afraid to Be Creative

    If you’re opting for a video resume, then go the whole hog and make it spectacular. Be creative, whether that’s with the concept of your pitch, use of humor, clever production values or brilliant editing.

    In the video above, James Corne creates a spoof AA-style confession, but maintains a certain veneer and dresses like he was headed to the office. This demonstrates creativity and humor whilst showing him to be a professional person.

    Here is another list to help me spark my ideas on how to create a more proficient blog. Some of the options on this list are a bit ridiculous for this class and I couldn't really see myself doing them like hiring other writers.     This site lists out 50 ways to help improve your blog, specifically for WordPress which is relevant to what we are using. It groups all the sections of WordPress and underneath those has tips to help that section. There was stuff that I didn't even know that would help improve the blog. However I'm not sure if we will get that in depth with our WordPress blog but nonetheless it's a good resource to look over.

    This article was another good one I found. Even though there are so many options it discuess but it breaks down into sections depending on what you are looking to change for your wordpress. The chunks the author chose to break these tips into are navigation, Design, Performance, Security, SEO, and other. Each section consists of 5 or more specific tips that fit into that category.

    D#6, HW#6-- I really enjoyed this website for many different reasons. Firstly, for the way t is set up. It is easy to read and enjoyable. They have a main bullet point to look at, and then list and shortly describe different aspects of that bullet point. Also, it covers just about every aspect from design, to performance, to even security. It has a lot of great information!

    The Phoenix, and in general every location, craigslist website is prone to the repetition guideline of CRAP; every column is listed in only a blue hyper-link. When you pull up a certain category, every listing is also in blue hyper-link and there is no bolding what so ever.

    This is not one of the most trusted sites that I have ever been to but however it is highly used in trying to sell items that are local in the area. It is known for having some questionable items, but this is efficient in custom service because instead of worrying of shipping you can find other people in the same city for quick service or fast money. A huge difference in this site is that this does not carry as much restrictions which may worry some but it does provide different services in this way.

Practice what you're going to say ahead of time. Start by mentioning your name (first and last). Focus on your professional endeavors, not your personal ones.     Video resumes are different than a Typical resume because you're actually the one in front of the camera and speaking about who you are and what you do. This is a lot different and I would say harder then writing your information on a piece of paper. But the advantages of this are they can see you for who you really are and not what's written on a piece of paper. A disadvantage of this is that you have to make sure you pin point your audience is and that can be difficult at times. When writing something on a paper it's easy to address certain people but when you are actually in front of someone or in front of a camera you have to work a little harder to present yourself in the right way.

    The page is a great illustration of the western flow of reading. There is not much that distracts the reader from the information being given out. The covers of the books guide the viewer to continue downward despite there being any actual guiding line of any sort. Each book is accompanied by a short caption that distinguishes the title of the book from a brief quote or description of the book. All this information is in a easily written font. This whole page is an un-ranked list and it just flows downward allowing the reader to follow the books downward.

      For my project I am still not sure what I want to do yet, however I do know that if a list of materials is needed I will list it first.

      These three tips are very important I can see that they will be important in the future, thinking through my instructions are going to vital because if I don't take control of what to list and in what order then the instructions will be difficult to understand.

    I really enjoyed how the layout was easy to read and follow. The author gives good tips on what to look out for and what to say in your instructions. The author also has lots of other links on her website to help a writer out.

    Aside from the creepy lady at the top lol there are some great instructional writing techniques. The tips I found to be of most use were testing out your instructions and having others try to make sense of them.

    This website supplements the book's topic of emphasis techniques by giving a straightforward tip list. I would recommend this list to anyone who wants a quick check list.

    This is a very helpful website that explains the importance of emphasizing in web pages. It says to use a lot of repetition, to stick it in the reader's mind. It also says give the major points more space to discuss. Use different font style to catch the reader's eye.

    A whole site dedicated to using Wordpress! There are so many themes that it's incredibly difficult to choose!  This site suggests going through the various view options, such as the front page view, single page view, and the comments, and them comparing how each appear. Is the sidebar present in all views or just some? Does the header change, etc.? The author of this site suggests going through and investigating every aspect of the new theme. The site also lists the various layout options and also suggests that content match theme. What impression do I wish my audience to have?

    I like this site because it breaks down each individual part of the aspects that need to be included in writing instructions. Something that will help me when I am doing Project #1 is that this page gives me a list of what sections are required to write instructions and explains them all. It states that instructions need a title, introduction, list of tools, steps, and finally a conclusion.
