DD#7HW#1Print - The 75 Books Every Man Should Read - Esquire - 0 views

  •
The page is a great illustration of the western flow of reading. There is not much that distracts the reader from the information being given out. The covers of the books guide the viewer to continue downward despite there being any actual guiding line of any sort. Each book is accompanied by a short caption that distinguishes the title of the book from a brief quote or description of the book. All this information is in a easily written font. This whole page is an un-ranked list and it just flows downward allowing the reader to follow the books downward.

D#6 HW#2 - Gestalt Principles - 0 views

  • Gestalt is also known as the "Law of Simplicity" or the "Law of Pragnanz" (the entire figure or configuration), which states that every stimulus is perceived in its most simple form.
  • Gestalt theorists followed the basic principle that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. In other words, the whole (a picture, a car) carried a different and altogether greater meaning than its individual components (paint, canvas, brush; or tire, paint, metal, respectively). In viewing the "whole," a cognitive process takes place – the mind makes a leap from comprehending the parts to realizing the whole,
  • 1. Figure/Ground
  • ...12 more annotations...
  • This principle shows our perceptual tendency to separate whole figures from their backgrounds based on one or more of a number of possible variables, such as contrast, color, size, etc.
  • Tips Clearly differentiate between figure and ground in order to focus attention and minimize perceptual confusion.
  • Camouflage Camouflage is the deliberate alteration of figure-ground so that the figure blends into the ground.
  • 2.  Similarity
  • Gestalt theory states that things which share visual characteristics such as shape, size, color, texture, or value will be seen as belonging together in the viewer’s mind.
  • 3.  Proximity
  • The Gestalt law of proximity states that "objects or shapes that are close to one another appear to form groups". Even if the shapes, sizes, and objects are radically different, they will appear as a group if they are close together.
  • 4.  Closure The satisfaction of a pattern encoded, as it were, into the brain, thus triggering recognition of the stimulus. This can involve the brain's provision of missing details thought to be a part of a potential pattern, or, once closure is achieved, the elimination of details unnecessary to establish a pattern match.
  • 5.  Good Continuation (Continuity)
  • This Gestalt law states that learners "tend to continue shapes beyond their ending points".
  • 6.  Symmetry or Order
  • If an object is asymmetrical, the viewer will waste time trying to find the problem instead of concentrating on the instruction.

The Public Domain: How to Find & Use ... - Stephen Fishman - Google Books - 0 views

  •
This book covers copyright rules for everything from writings to music and even to maps which was something that I hadn't seen or even thought about. I have not read the book but glanced through it and it looks easy to understand and is packed full of information.
  •
I'm all about the easy when it comes to books like this and after glancing through this material, it not only looks easy to read but also easy to understand. It gives very good descriptions on public domain and makes it clear enough that you know exactly what it is talking about.

I own this textbook and it really is my best tool for writing instructions successfully. There is no preview on Google Books, but if you are really interested, look it up at your closest library. Part 2 helps you plan the document.

Copyright: examples and explanations - Stephen M. McJohn - Google Books - 0 views

Pages 2-5 of this book discuss the economic and philosophical justifications for copyright. This book excerpt helped me better understand the importance of copyright and why it is sometimes necessary.

D#7 HW#6.1: Copyright: Examples And Explanations - Stephen M. McJohn - Google Books - 0 views

I am unable to highlight portions from this Google Book but page 1 goes into an overview of what copyright is generally. Works created by a person as a performance or display need explicit permission from the creator or copyright holder.

D#7, HW#6- Fair Use - 1 views

  •
This book is helpful because it gives a general idea of copyright but also explains how fair use works. It explains how the laws of copyright work with fair use in news reporting, creative works, education, and others. This book also deals with getting permission which can be helpful to authors.

This book touches on the difference between fair use and creative commons. The author gives her opinion on whether fair use or creative commons is best. She believes that creative commons is more useful than fair use.

Here is another good source of information on fair use, and it's "fairly" new. It's a book called "Reclaiming Fair Use" by Patricia Aufderheide and Peter Jaszi. There are excerpts from the book at this website.

D#1 HW#13 Dan Pink study questions - 0 views

  •
Study questions on Daniel Pink's book, "A Whole New Mind," which has a chapter on design. Other chapters in the book also have tips on good design. I really love Dan Pink's design viewpoint, which is that we can find or create good design in everything.

D#1, HW#13-Design Website-Architectural Design - 0 views

  •
D#1, HW#13 I really enjoyed this website for a couple different reasons. First of all, the design process is similar to that in the book, but yet it has a different approach because it is for an architectural piece, instead of a web site or banner for example. I also enjoyed it because it is not only a list of the concepts for the designer process, but it is also the steps that this particular architectural design teams uses and wants to share with their customers. This shows those customers that they have a structured plan and as a customer you can know where you are in the time line of your design and build process. Although the design process is not exactly the same as the book, it uses the same concepts from beginning with a blank page and sketching out ideas, to ending with details helping to make the project personal to the audience.

This book offers some good information on how balance is used and the importance of a balanced design. An imbalanced design can be hard for a reader to understand and creates negative feelings in the audience.

This book goes over the history of old media and how it came to be what it is today like in Manovich's article on old and new media. It also covers the theory of what new media is and what makes it new media.

This website is one that helps me understand Ford's Article the best. The article basically is talking about how everyone is looking to the internet for everything. That they are no longer reading books, magazines, watching basic TV because they can find everything on the internet. It also discusses how people are looking to apps on their phones for everything even if they have to pay some money to get it. Whatever helps just a little is good. It also talks a little but about customer service and how since people are turning to the internet and the web the creators need to make them feel part of it and not just a visitor. I picked this website AZ central .com because it has everything on her news, books, jobs, homes, etc. The other thing that I like about it is that it makes me feel a part of something. With all the information that it gives me I never feel like I'm missing something and I feel like I there in the action of everything. I think that this is important because I have somewhere where I can go to get all my information and I can feel like its there for me and not just there to be there.

I like this site because it breaks down each individual part of the aspects that need to be included in writing instructions. Something that will help me when I am doing Project #1 is that this page gives me a list of what sections are required to write instructions and explains them all. It states that instructions need a title, introduction, list of tools, steps, and finally a conclusion.

D #7 HW #6 Copyright: examples and explanations - 0 views

  •
Includes a "Categories of Works" section discussion the types of works covered by copyright, such as literary works, musical and dramatic works, pantomimes and choreography, pictorial and graphic works, sculptures, films and other audiovisual works, sound recordings, and finally architectural works. Copyrighted works can fall into more than one category (a play is both a literary and dramatic work, for example) and the list is not exhaustive. A work that doesn't seem to fit into any of these categories could still be covered by copyright if it is "an original work of authorship." The chapter then covers each category in more detail. Literature, for example, is defined not just as novels and plays but also movie scripts, letters, email messages, blogs, computer programs, and even souvenir T-shirt messages. It also doesn't have to be tangible; a short story doesn't need to be published in physical format to be copyrighted.
