  • Don’t just create a video resume because you can, create one because it’s relevant to the job you want to do.

    If you’re applying for a role in the online, media, social or creative professions, then it’s more likely a decent video resume will have the desired effect, i.e., getting you invited for an interview.

    Don’t send a video resume to a more traditional type of company that won’t “get it.” You might do your chances more harm than good.

    Graeme Anthony, from the example above, is a public relations executive. His cleverly thought out online content adds an extra wow factor to his already outstanding experience.

    2. Don’t Just Read Out Your Resume

    The whole point of a video presentation is to offer a potential employer greater insight into you than a traditional resume can, so

    just reading aloud the contents of your CV is a waste of everyone’s time.

    Use the video to help the employer get a sense of not just what you have achieved, but what you are capable of achieving in the future.

    “Tell them why you would be the right person to hire and what you can do for them,” says Mario Gedicke, account manager at Mayomann.com, a video employment platform.

    You can, however, highlight particularly relevant info from your resume. “Focus on your experience and skill set (and possible education/training) especially relevant to the position,” advises Tyler Redford, CEO of resumebook.tv, an online resume management system.

    And if it’s appropriate and relevant to the job (as in the example above), then don’t be afraid to talk about your passions.

    3. Keep it Short

    “Keep your video resume short,” says Gedicke, who advises that a

    one-minute mark is ideal. Redford agrees that a video resume should be “short and sweet.” He suggests staying within two minutes.

    “Keep in mind that recruiters would likely want to use the video resume as an initial filter for applicants,” Redford says. “However, recruiters do not typically want to use the video resume in lieu of a real, in-person interview.”

    Think of your video resume as your own personal teaser trailer. In the example above, the clip is less than one minute and 20 seconds in length, while the extra time is made up of a

    bloopers reel accompanied with credits, a clever way to show off your personality (and that you don’t take yourself too seriously).

    4. Don’t Be Afraid to Be Creative

    If you’re opting for a video resume, then go the whole hog and make it spectacular. Be creative, whether that’s with the concept of your pitch, use of humor, clever production values or brilliant editing.

    Video resumes are different than a Typical resume because you're actually the one in front of the camera and speaking about who you are and what you do. This is a lot different and I would say harder then writing your information on a piece of paper. But the advantages of this are they can see you for who you really are and not what's written on a piece of paper. A disadvantage of this is that you have to make sure you pin point your audience is and that can be difficult at times. When writing something on a paper it's easy to address certain people but when you are actually in front of someone or in front of a camera you have to work a little harder to present yourself in the right way.

    This is a great website that illustrates how important flow is design. It was my favorite of all the pages I visited It gives a great definition of design flow, as well as the 2 kinds of flow (takes examples straight out of Basics of Design). It then goes on and explains how to improve your verbal and visual flow in your work.

Firstly, it explains what visual flow and verbal flow exactly are so that you know where you're starting off, which I really enjoy in a website. There is also audio just in case the reading is a bit overwhelming and pictures of what certain steps look like. This has a wide variety and can appeal to the likes of many different people

    This site has several good tutorials. I think the Featured Posts tutorial and the tutorial that shows you how to put text over your lead graphic seem like they'd be interesting blog additions. The draw back on these changes is that you have to be familiar with web encoding though.

Other recruiters are simply lazy or too hesitant to use different technologies in their search for the right person for the job. Either way, your video might end up in the garbage despite all your best efforts.

    Very good website! A lot of information about how to create a video resume. What I liked about this is that it even provided information about the equipment that is needed to make one! It also covered the legal aspect of video resumes which the other two sites that I found did not. You have to have a consent form for every person that is in your video and this is good to know. It covers what design flow is and gives an image example of how flow flows within a graphic design. The author states that it is important to create an entry point, "something that stands out from everything else so that most people look at it first". The author also gives advice on controling flow within a design by using arrows, people or faces that look in a certain direction, and perspective. Using space to control flow is something that I found interesting the author states that "varying the space between a series of elements can be used to create rhythm and motion".

It also talks a little but about customer service and how since people are turning to the internet and the web the creators need to make them feel part of it and not just a visitor. I picked this website AZ central .com because it has everything on her news, books, jobs, homes, etc. The other thing that I like about it is that it makes me feel a part of something. With all the information that it gives me I never feel like I'm missing something and I feel like I there in the action of everything. The term "gestalt" is kind of the psychological term to describe tools like figure, proximity, closure, continuation, and similarity to bring unity (repetition) to design. While a number of them cannot be applied to my course blog (I'm not collaborating with anyone else, for example), there was still plenty of relevant advice. Even though I am given the topics to cover, I can still let my own personality come through. This relates to the course outcome of performance; a blog needs to feel like it was written by a human being and not by a robot.  I could also start adding videos that contribute to my audience's understanding. I know that the sample rhetoric on the town assignment included a video of the advertisement the student had analyzed. Another good suggestion is to break up the paragraphs, which I try to do, or use bullet points. Another blogger suggests using subheads.

    This website offers more information on the phenomenon of "Groupthink," how to spot it, and how to avoid it. This is mainly intended for the workplace, but a lot of it is relevant for school groups, too. The term "Groupthink" was coined by Irving Janis, who pointed out that Groupthink occurs when there is one strong, persuasive group leader, a high level of group cohesion, and intense pressure from an outside source to make a good decision. This site suggests that when a group is in the decision-making process, in order to avoid Groupthink, they should make a point to explore objectives and alternatives, as well as to encourage members to challenge each others' ideas. The "Team Writing" text mentioned using brainstorming as a tactic, in which ideas are allowed to flow freely without any form of evaluation from the group.     I am a little partial this one particularly because of the fact that we were just asked to pick out our favorite blog site and what we liked about it etc ect.. It talks about where the eyes should be drawn to and how using contrast in a web page or any design can add value to it. It discusses how to use colors appropriately and how to make the text pop out. It also points out that contrast is a tool for accomplishing hierarchy.
