    Study finds that men with opiated induced low T have improvement in pain with Testosterone therapy.  Opiates are one of the many causes of low Testosterone (see my book Man Boob Nation).  Low T has been associated with increase inflammation in men.  Thus a normalization of Testosterone would provide anti-inflammatory effects.

    Opiates and prescription meds are a common cause of low T in men.  In this study with men with metabolic dysfunction and opiate induced low T, Testosterone therapy did not worsen inflammatory/metabolic markers.  Of note, this study did not find improvement in the metabolic and inflammatory markers as other studies have shown.

    Methadone use in men is associated with significant reduction in serum Total Testosterone levels in men.  In women, just the opposite is true, though this did not reach statistical significance.  The higher the dose of methadone in men, the lower the Testosterone.  The link between opiates and low T in men is very strong.  This is the first that I am aware of that points to the opposite effect in women.

    Opioid use, despite type (including methadone), is associated with lower Testosterone in men.  This is not new information, but this meta-analysis reconfirms this relationship, particularly that methadone has the same effect.  This relationship was not found in women.  These physicians that regularly prescribe opiates  to men are doing them an incredible disservice.  A lower T in men is a significant negative health biomarker.

    only abstract available here to general public.  Opiates suprress the immune system.  This is an important point in the fight against cancer. Cancer is, in part, the result of signficant immune imbalance.  In this study of patients with Renal Cell Cancer, melatonin + IL-2 was found to counter this immunosuppressive effect of morphine to increase partial response and to increase the 3 year survival.

    Very disturbing trend.  Study finds that opioid addicted infants are on a dramatic risk in the US.  This study looked at Neionatal abstinence syndrome from 2000 to 2009.  This follows the significant increase in maternal opioid prescription use.  We physicians must do better.  Patients must demand better.  This study just focused on hospital costs directly associated with the Neonatal period.  No cost estimates are evaluated for long-term care.

    study points to a modest decrease in dopamine and serotonin production in heroic users.  There appears to be a decrease in dopamine production, which could be via a down regulation of tyrosine hydroxylase enzyme and thus release.  Decreased homovanillate also noted.  Other studies have pointed to a decrease/downregulation of D2/D3 receptors.
