DHEA may be beneficial in those with ED + hypertension and those with organic ED cause.  "Organic" causes like diabetes and neurological problems DHEA provided no benefit.

small study finds 50 mg of DHEA improves symptoms of ED.  Small study, so hard to take a lot from this, but DHEA is an androgen, so logically it makes sense.  

TNF-alpha inhibited activation of DHEA in RA.

animal model: showed that DHEA treatment resulted in increased adiponectin secretion from fat cells. This occurred with an associated increase in PPAR-gamma receptors.  The suggestion is that DHEA through PPAR-gamma increased fat cell production and secretion of adiponectin.

DHEA beneficial at the biochemistry level in asthma.  DHEA inhibits the activation of transcription factor activator protein-1.

Interesting abstract of study of DHEA metabolites.  In vivo study finds some DHEA metabolites inhibit 5-alpha-reductase activity.  The opening sentence implies that 5alpha-reductase and conversion of T to DHT promotes androgen dependent disease.  The inference here is cancer, however, what they fail to mention is that this activity is via the estrogen receptors.

Supporting evidence for DHEA improvement for women is mixed and minimal.  Full article is not available so the question as whether a need was indicated based on testing is not available.  Side effects were seen with DHEA--primarily acne.  

Data from MESA study finds that increasing endogenous Estradiol, Total and free Testosterone, DHEA, and lower SHBG were associated with hypertension in postmenopausal women.

Again, what is the evidence on androgens in women.  The majority of data is points to negative metabolic effects.  This study looked at men and women and found inverse relationships between Testosterone and DHEA in the sexes.  In women, higher bioavailable Testosterone and DHEA was associated with visceral and subcutaneous fat in women, where as the opposite is true in men.  In both men and women, higher SHBG was associated with lower fat.

Study finds 50 mg of DHEA improves insulin sensitivity in Hypoadrenal women.  The authors also found and increase in DHEAS, bioavailable T, androstenedione, and a reduced SHBG, insulin, and glucagon.

Very insightful study.  Study looked at hyperadrogenism and inflammation in women on the orders of PCOS.  The study subjects did not have PCOS, but hyperandrogenism via 130 mg DHEA was associated with an increase in TNF-alpha in these lean o/w healthy women.  We know this is due to hyperandrogenism as elevated Testosterone, DHEA, and androstenedione were documented with treatment. Take home:  androgens promote inflammation in women.  I believe this has serious negative implications about the massive Testosterone doping that is occurring in women today.
