Building mutual understanding is a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy abroad. Through the explanation and presentation of U.S policies, values, culture and history, U.S. embassies and consulates abroad seek to tell America's story. To that end, the U.S. Mission to China (Embassy Beijing and Consulates General Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Wuhan) seeks to support activities that, whether through existing partnerships between eligible U.S. institutions and their Chinese counterparts or through new ties, explain American foreign policy, values and culture to the people of China. Such programming will enhance and broaden the outreach of the U.S. Mission in China. The U.S. Embassy in Beijing seeks to ensure that programming is representative of the depth and breadth of U.S. foreign policy, history values and culture. The U.S.-China relationship is one of the United States' most important bilateral relationships and much work remains to enable mutual understanding between the peoples of the two nations. Proposals should increase overall understanding of U.S. policy, society, and values by the people of China.

The Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Program in China Studies in its seventh year seeks to maintain the vitality of China Studies in North America through fellowships and grants designed primarily for scholars early in their careers. Studies on and in China have developed over the last 30 years in the United States and Canada into a robust field, but current conditions pose daunting problems, especially for scholars just before and just after the dissertation. To address this situation, the program offers three competitions: Predissertation-Summer Travel Grants Postdoctoral Fellowships Collaborative Reading-Workshop Grants

The Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Program in China Studies, in its ninth year seeks to maintain the vitality of China Studies in North America through fellowships for scholars early in their careers. Studies on and in China have developed over the last 30 years in the United States and Canada into a robust field, but current conditions pose daunting problems, especially for scholars just after the dissertation.

The MMAAP Foundation invites the submission of applications in the areas of Geriatrics, Dermatology, and Hematology, which will be referred to committees of independent Chinese experts. These Chinese committees will select three applications in each category for evaluation by United States panels of independent  experts or in the case of Dermatology grants to the Medical Advisory Committee of American Skin Association for final selection. Awards will be made to outstanding not-for-profit, medical and scientific institutions in the United States and China to support research and education. The MMAAP Foundation will provide the sole support for these initiatives. One Research Fellowship and one Translational Project will be awarded in each of these areas: Geriatrics, Dermatology and Hematology. The first is a one-year Research Fellowship for promising investigators in clinical or basic research to spend in the United States at a distinguished partner institution. Individuals selected must have documented research experience. The second award is a Translational Project which has the potential to affect care in China that can be demonstrated to have a measurable effect on health within 2 years. In order to qualify for funding, Chinese applicants must have demonstrated ability in clinical research. Both awards require the applicants to have command of English in order to successfully collaborate with partnering institutions. An explicit goal for these awards is to create concrete advances in world health and to produce mutually beneficial partnerships that will facilitate the development of long term relationships between academic institutions in the US and China, as well as greater Asia.

The Max-Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Department of Religious Diversity in Göttingen is offering The Ph.D. fellowships are for 3-4 years. The dissertation will be defended at Utrecht University. The postdoctoral fellowships are for one or two years. The research will be done in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Ethnic and Cultural Diversity in China at Minzu University in Beijing. The projects have to be on the following topics: 1. Study of the relations between Yi and Miao in Sichuan, Yunnan, and Vietnam 2. Study of the effects on ethnic minorities of the opening up of S.W. China to S.E. Asia 3. Social networks beyond ethnicity in China: Case study of the classmates and alumni of Minzu Requirements: For Postdoc: Ph.D. in Social /Cultural Anthropology, Religious Studies, Sociology, Political Science or other related disciplines of the Social Sciences or Humanities. Fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese is expected. For Ph.D. candidates: MA in Social /Cultural Anthropology, Religious Studies, Sociology, Political Science or other related disciplines of the Social Sciences or Humanities. Fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese is expected.

The purpose of the U.S.-China Program for Biomedical Collaborative Research is to stimulate collaborative basic, translational, and clinical research between United States (U.S.)-based researchers and Chinese researchers in the areas of cancer, environmental health, heart disease, blood disorders, diseases of the eye and visual system, mental health, and neurological disorders. Partnering U.S. and Chinese investigators must work jointly to submit identical applications to NIH and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), respectively. U.S. investigators must respond to the announcement from NIH, including the Chinese application as an attachment, and Chinese investigators must respond to a separate funding announcement from NSFC, including the NIH application as an attachment.

The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China is pleased to announce an open competition for assistance awards through this Request for Applications (RFA). PAS invites U.S. individuals, educational institutions, and not-for-profit organizations subject to 501 (c) (3) of the tax code, as well as Chinese organizations legally established in China, to submit proposals for conducting cultural exchange programs that will provide Chinese audiences with the opportunity to experience U.S. culture and the arts. PAS will have up to US$200,000 available to award multiple grants for up to US$50,000 per grant. Please see the full announcement for additional details.

To that end, the foundation is inviting applications from mainland China for its Fellowship Award in Translational Research. The aim of the program is to build enduring partnership between the U.S. and Asia through the training of future Chinese academics and to encourage long-term collaborations between the two regions. The annual award provides  a one-year fellowship to a qualified candidate to conduct  research  in the area of translational medicine. The program will provide support in the amount of $60,000 for the project to be conducted at the applicant's home institution in China, as well as support for the U.S. partner institution in the amount of $25,000.

The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China is pleased to announce an open competition for assistance awards through this Notice of Funding Opportunities (NOFO). PAS invites proposals for conducting exchange programs that will provide Chinese audiences with the opportunity to experience and understand U.S. culture, society, government and art. PAS will generally award multiple grants for up to US$50,000 per grant, but will consider grants for up to US$150,000 for programs that address concerns about regional security and nuclear proliferation, advocate for free, fair, and reciprocal trade and investment policies, or promote a free and open Indo-Pacific.

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) announces a Request for Statements of Interest (RSOI) from organizations interested in submitting Statements of Interest (SOI) for programs that support the policy objective to foster respect for human rights in China.

Scholars of Chinese Studies are encouraged to apply for special summer travel grants designed to promote  the use of the Canton Archives and Passionist China Collection at the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western  Cultural History at the University of San Francisco Center for the Pacific Rim.  Applications for travel grants to visit the USF Ricci Institute are welcome from scholars and researchers  working on social, cultural, diplomatic, religious, economic, political, and architectural history from the  19th and 20th centuries (to 1950).

NSF and selected foreign counterpart science and technology agencies sponsor international research institutes for U.S. graduate students in seven East Asia and Pacific locations at times set by the counterpart agencies between June and August each year. The Summer Institutes (EAPSI) operate similarly and the research visits to a particular location take place at the same time. Although applicants apply individually to participate in a Summer Institute, awardees become part of the cohort for each location. Applicants must propose a location, host scientist, and research project that is appropriate for the host site and duration of the international visit. An EAPSI award provides U.S. graduate students in science, engineering, and education: 1) first-hand research experiences in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, or Taiwan; 2) an introduction to the science, science policy, and scientific infrastructure of the respective location; and 3) an orientation to the society, culture, and language. It is expected that EAPSI awards will help students initiate professional relationships to enable future collaboration with foreign counterparts. The NSF award includes participation in the Pre-Departure Orientation, summer stipend of $5,000, and roundtrip airplane ticket to the host location. EAPSI partner agencies pay in-country living expenses during the Summer Institutes.

Selected Fellows will participate in curatorial work and research for a period of four to twelve months at museums or art institutions (in China, Taiwan, Canada, Germany, U.K. or U.S.A.) outside their national borders. Young fellows with less experience will have the opportunities to work under leading curatorial professionals. Round-trip airfare, accommodation, and living expenses during the attachment period will be covered.

The field study is designed to focus on the themes of global competence, education (both practice and issues of international, national, and state policy), and economics. The trip will provide fellows with structured opportunities to observe high-quality instruction and to interact with educators, students, administrators, and policy makers. Fellows also will have opportunities to investigate the historical and cultural significance of the destination country and engage in a service-learning project with a local community organization. Previous field study destinations have included China, Brazil, and Peru. The anticipated field study destination for the 2018 Global Learning Fellowship is South Africa.
