The Public Affairs Section of the Embassy of the United States in Panama announces an open competition for organizations to submit funding applications for a project to highlight the shared history of the United States and Panama through the identification and promotion of relevant historical sites. Please carefully follow all instructions below. Project Objectives: This project aims to promote U.S. national interests through the development of stronger support among the people of Panama. Ideal partners include organizations that are familiar with U.S.-Panamanian history that can demonstrate the ability to produce high-quality results that will reach a large audience. Project Description: This project will identify and carry out strategies to highlight the shared history between the United States and Panama, ideally through the installation of physical markers, signs, or plaques at locations of significance to U.S.-Panamanian history in Panama City and/or throughout the country. The project will produce a brochure-style guide map or series of maps featuring the important U.S.-Panamanian historical sites in the country/city. The project will facilitate wide distribution of the materials to the general public in order to educate Panamanian residents on this shared history. Grant funding may be used for all program expenses, including but not limited to design, installation, and printing of markers and brochures, and related personnel costs, within policy limits.

This call is for a one-year or semester-long fellowship for a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow wishing to work on the history of water law in Israel/Palestine or a related topic (such as the history of water law in a related jurisdiction, the history of related areas of law in Israel/Palestine, legal transfers in the British Empire, etc.). The fellowship is part of the Israel Science Foundation-funded research project headed by Dr. David Schorr: "Private and Public Water Rights in Mandate Palestine and Early Israel". TAU Law and its Berg Institute for Law and History are vibrant and collegial centers of legal history where candidates can expect interactions with a variety of interesting scholars in the field, and access to a wide range of historical and legal databases is available.

The Research Group "Alternatives to Democracy? The Social Order of Dictatorships" examines the question how dictatorial regimes - despite their inherent destructivity and repressive violence - create new orders of the political and the social that appeal to populations at large. The cases of pre-War Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union under Nikita Khrushchev, and Spain during the Franco era will serve as fields of inquiry to address the following questions: Which are the pre-conditions that give rise to dictatorships? When are they seen as an appealing way out of political, social, and economic disruption? How are dictatorial regimes able to generate legitimacy? What kind of stability do they create on the backdrop of crisis, insecurity, and disorder? Essential Duties & Responsibilities: We expect successful candidates to conduct extensive archival research in one of the countries under consideration. Each successful applicant will closely co-operate with the team of organizers of the Research Group: Brigit Aschmann (Chair of Modern European and Spanish History), Jörg Baberowski (Chair of Russian and Soviet History) and Michael Wildt (Chair of German History). Successful applicants are expected to write and defend a dissertation. In their research, they are asked to address and discuss conceptual questions of comparative history, including the comparison of modern dictatorial regimes.

SEFER Center awards grants to support research projects in multiple disciplines on Russian Jewry. The subject of the research may comprise different aspects of Jewish history and culture within the territory of former Russian Empire during various historical periods from the ancient times till post-soviet contemporary period. The grant covers the entire variety of humanitarian and social areas (history, literature, linguistics, art history, education, philosophy, religion studies, sociology, political science etc.), as well as interdisciplinary studies. The Center provides researchers, teachers and PhD students with financial support for implementation of academic researches, preparation of monographs, articles and dissertation theses. The grant program is intended for researches from Russia and abroad, including Europe, USA and Canada, Israel and Australia.

The U.S. Embassy's Public Affairs Section in Moscow (PAS Moscow) invites proposal submissions for a cooperative agreement to implement the Russian-American History Showcase (formerly the Fort Ross Quest). The grant recipient will work closely with Public Affairs and Cultural Affairs at Mission Russia to create an activity that motivates teams of Russian teachers and secondary school students to explore the shared history of the United States and Russia. The result of their research (a video, online game or board game, app, performance, comic book etc.) then becomes a useful outreach tool for further engagement with a broader audience. The grantee will support the travel and logistics for winning teams to participate in a study tour to Fort Ross state park and other sites of historical significance in the United States. The Russian-American History Showcase proactively promotes a broader understanding of U.S. history while also promoting tolerance, shared values, teamwork, and English language learning.

SEFER Center awards grants to support research projects in multiple disciplines on Russian Jewry. The residence grants are offered to researchers of various fields in the humanities from different countries. We especially encourage historians, culture studies scholars, and anthropologists. We welcome applications for research that offer broad interpretations of urban history as a discipline at the intersection of various approaches of humanities and social sciences. The chronological and geographical frames of the proposed research are limited to the 19th and 20th-century history of East and Central Europe. Preference will be given to topics related to the Center's research focuses like urbanization in multi-ethnic cities, individual experience of city residents during 20th-century radical changes and wars, planned cities, urban heritage, commemorative practices and city space, infrastructure and cultural practices in the cities, digital and public history.

The Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Basel awards one doctoral scholarship in the fields of Modern Jewish History, Jewish Literature, Modern Jewish Intellectual History, or Jewish Cultural History per December 1st 2013 or by agreement. The award is specifically aimed at female applicants. Eligibility criteria: - an excellent higher university degree that qualifies for doctoral studies in Jewish Studies at the University of Basel - willingness to work at the Centre for Jewish Studies (apart from possible trips to archives etc.) - willingness to perform organisational and other tasks as part of the Centre team, possibly a teaching assignment Suggestions for a dissertation topic can be submitted along with the application but are not mandatory. Possible topics can also be discussed with the Centre administration if the scholarship is awarded to the applicant. A possible topic could be a project within the context of the intended collaboration of the Centre of Jewish Studies with the archive of the National Library of Israel. The scholarship will be awarded for 36 months and amounts to CHF 50'000 p.a. After 18 months of the intended funding period an interim report by the Centre administration on the status of the project will decide about the continued funding for the remaining duration of the stipend.

The program includes five one-month residence grants for young researchers, working on their PhD thesis or preparing them for publishing, and five two-week residence grants for advanced researchers. The program also provides for three residences in digital urban history, jointly with the Lviv Interactive project, an online-encyclopedia representing the history of Lviv through places and spaces. The researchers are expected to have an interest in preparing materials for the project while placing their own research focus within the spatial aspect of Lviv and engaging digital methods to study the topic under analysis.

The American Research Institute in Turkey takes pleasure in inviting applications for one to three advanced long-term fellowships for research in Turkey made possible by support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The fields of study cover all periods of history in the general range of the humanities and include humanistically oriented aspects of the social sciences, prehistory, history, art, archaeology, literature, and linguistics, as well as interdisciplinary aspects of cultural history. The fellowships tenures range from four to twelve continuous months during 2018-2019. Stipends of $4,200 per month are awarded on the basis of individual proposals. Scholars who have completed their formal training by the application deadline and plan to carry out research in Turkey for four months or longer may apply. The Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin offer six scholarships for a PhD in History at the International Max Planck Research School for Moral Economies of Modern Societies (IMPRS Moral Economies).   The PhD program of the IMPRS Moral Economies supports research projects that investigate the values, emotions, and habits that informed and inspired modern social formations, particularly in Europe, North America, and South Asia. The relationship between modern history of emotions and the development, consolidation and transformation of morals stands at the center of the research focus.

For over 20 years the Barbara Bates Center for The Study of the History of Nursing has offered fellowships and research awards of up to $5,000 to support: residence at the Center, ongoing collaboration with nurse historians, and historical research in nursing. It is expected that the research and new materials produced by our scholars will help ensure the growth of scholarly work focused on the history of nursing.

The U.S. Embassy, Bucharest invites non-profit Romanian organizations and institutions, with activity and experience in the field of education and civic engagement, and with no political affiliations, to apply for a grant of up to $90,000 to develop a curriculum on the history of communism. The project should be designed to train a group of ten trainers - selected through competition - to teach based on this curriculum, and organize two one-week summer camps for 75 undergraduate university students each from all fields of study and representing all parts of Romania, to learn about the history of communism. The program should be planned for a 15-month period, to start in October 2019, include one event in December 2019, such as a two-day seminar. A summer camp should be planned to take place before the end of August 2020; the program must include follow-up activities to be conducted by each of the ten trainers and 150 students by the end of November 2020.

Scholars of Chinese Studies are encouraged to apply for special summer travel grants designed to promote  the use of the Canton Archives and Passionist China Collection at the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western  Cultural History at the University of San Francisco Center for the Pacific Rim.  Applications for travel grants to visit the USF Ricci Institute are welcome from scholars and researchers  working on social, cultural, diplomatic, religious, economic, political, and architectural history from the  19th and 20th centuries (to 1950).

University College Cork invites applications for scholarships in the four-year structured PhD programme in Digital Arts and Humanities (DAH). Successful candidates will be registered with the full-time inter-disciplinary structured PhD programme co-ordinated with an all-Irish university consortium. Candidates will pursue their individual research agendas within the program, based on projects developed from proposals which they provide during the application process. ARIT / National Endowment for the Humanities Advanced Fellowships for Research in Turkey, 2014-2015. ARIT/NEH Advanced Fellowships cover all fields of the humanities, including prehistory, history, art, archaeology, literature, and linguistics as well as interdisciplinary aspects of cultural history for applicants who have completed their academic training. The fellowships may be held for terms ranging from four months to a full year. Stipends range from $16,800 to 50,400. ARIT Fellowships for Research in Turkey, 2014-2015. ARIT Fellowships are offered for research in ancient, medieval, or modern times, in any field of the humanities and social sciences. Post-doctoral and advanced doctoral fellowships may be held for various terms, for terms from one to three months up to one academic year. Stipends range from $4,000 to $16,000. Applications for ARIT fellowships must be submitted to ARIT before November 1, 2013. The fellowship committee will notify applicants by late January, 2014. ARIT LANGUAGE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS 2014. ARIT - Princeton Summer Fellowships for Intensive Advanced Turkish Language at Bogazici University, Istanbul, summer 2014. The program supports intensive study of advanced Turkish language at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, including air fare, tuition, and stipend. The application deadline is February 1.

The successful applicant will join a team of scholars led by Emeritus Professor James Warren and focusing on the Southeast Asian and Indo-Pacific regions. Investigations centre upon periods of acute environmental crisis, variously characterized by natural disasters, epidemic disease, socio-economic instability, and migration, bondage, and mass mortality. Within this framework, researchers will investigate current and traditional perceptions of environmental risk and risk management, explore past-to-present patterns to the human and environmental dimensions of crisis, and apply the results of historical research to enhance environmental risk and governance protocols. This groundbreaking initiative is not limited to the discipline of history, involving geography, anthropology, and the environmental sciences.

Travel grants of up to $2,500 are available to support research between August 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020 in the Special and Area Studies Collections of University of Florida. Proposals are due Friday, May 17, 2019, with award notifications expected to be made the week of June 17, 2019. Evaluation criteria include interdisciplinarity, use of more than one collection, and a tangible publication or scholarly outcome. Awardees must travel 100 miles or farther to be eligible. Grants are available for research in any of the department's collections and must be used for onsite research. Research Travel Grants assist scholars who wish to use the University of Notre Dame's archival collections in Catholic Americana at the Hesburgh Libraries. D'Agostino Research Travel Grants support research in Roman archives for projects on U.S. Catholic history. Hesburgh Research Travel Grants provide funds for scholars to research primary source materials relating to the life and work of Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame from 1952 to 1987. Hibernian Research Awards support the scholarly study of Irish American history.
