    Jive SBS (Social Business Software) is a community building application, formerly known as Clearspace. It is specifically suited for medium to large organisations and boasts that it is "built for the enterprise" [1]. The application allows you to build communities for employees, the public (or both) [2]. Looking primarily at the Employee Community product, we are offered a powerful social networking tool that connects employees for the purpose of online collaboration. Employees can have detailed profiles and connections to "foster teamwork". At a glance information is also provided about online status, allowing employees to quickly see who is available for meetings etc. The profile information facilitates simple creation of organisation charts and groups for projects, teams, sections etc [3]. Features include discussions, collaborative documents, a configurable homepage dashboard, blogs, polls, bookmarks, categories, status updates, access control, private storage, mobile device support, project management tools (milestones, tasks, and calendars), search engine optimisation, and a range of other rich features [4]. Search and tag capabilities are worthy of note. The software supports tagging like most popular applications; however all content is included in search results (blog entries, discussion posts, annotations etc). This means that nothing is missed when undertaking a site search. Jive SBS has been considered a leader by Gartner in corporate social software [5] and a range of IT based experts have given encouraging reviews [6] [7]. Jive considers itself "robust, [and] enterprise tested" due to its 8 year maturity and the successful hosting of public sites with in excess of 80 million views/month, and employee communities comprising 20,000+ active users [4].

Jive SBS appears to be particularly useful for networking and information sharing in the corporate environment, however it is important to consider reliability and uptime of any product that is hosted entirely under the control of an external provider [9].     Jive SBS was built for business and is the largest and fastest Social Business Software (SBS) in the world [1]. It brings together collaboration software, community software and social networking tools and enables organisations to connect with either employee's or customers or both [1]. When Jive SBS were looking to extend their leadership in the enterprise market with a new leadership strategy [2]. They went to 62 companies to find out what their business objectives were and how they use social software within their organisation. They found there were four main areas of focus; employee engagement, innovation, marketing/sales, market engagement, government and support [2][3]. With this information they redesigned their software [2]. On April 14, 2010, Jive SBS announced its next generation of the Jive Market Engagement solution product. Jive SBS aquired Filtrbox earlier in the year and has now integrated the technology into its product [4][5]. Filtrbox is a social media monitoring software, and Jive is the first company to combine it with collaborative SBS [5]. With the Market Engagment product a business can monitor and highlight people, conversations and brands influencing your product or service. Users are able to personalise a dashboard for their organisation so that you can configure topics, competitors, or product lines and employ filtering options. The learnings made through the software can be shared among the organisation by publishing findings onto an observation wall [5].     Ning is an online social collaboration tool which brings together networks of people with similar interests and passions [1]. Ning submits information into categories to ensure content is accessible for users. The categories include: sports, causes, education, art, politics, entertainment, networking and music [1]. It is about creating a customized social network and inviting people to join or joining social networks already created with topics of interest. Ning integrates different applications like blogs, wiki, forums, photo galleries and calendars [1]. Ning's main competitor in the online social network space is SocialGo with Facebook and MySpace offering a similar service however not as tailored and unique [2]. As at 12/11/2008 Ning had over 4 million visitors a month [4] after its launch in 2005. In a recent article, McCracken (2009) [2] revealed that Ning has announced it will no longer provide free networks, which means network creators will either have to switch to a paid plan or leave Ning and move elsewhere. It is a brave move and with other competitors offering a similar service for free, it will be interesting to see if creators will remain with Ning or move on. However as Ramirez (2009) [3] points out, according to the 'ownership rights' which is part of the 'Terms of Services', "Ning owns all right, title and interest, including, all intellectual property rights, in and to the Ning Technology".     Diigo is a social bookmarking tool that has practical research applications, for both personal and enterprise purposes. Diigo is a self-described "collaborative research platform" [1] and has been lauded as an effective research tool by a number of sources [2] [3]. Diigo allows users to bookmark and annotate links, adding tags and private commentary much like many other social bookmarking tools (e.g. Delicious). However, Diigo extends this functionality with a browser add-on that includes a highlighting tool and the ability to attach one's annotations in the form of a "sticky note" [4]. Provided the user is logged in at the time, any subsequent return to annotated pages in the future results in the presentation of those annotations. In this respect, Diigo could be a valuable knowledge management and research tool for corporate needs. Given the functionality to create and manage groups, Diigo is applicable to an enterprise that undertakes regular research and sharing of collated information [2]. Instant Messaging for Collaboration: A Case Study of a High-Tech Firm - 1 views

    This resource represents a case study done within a high-technology software and service company, known as KME, on the effectiveness of instant messaging (IM) as a collaborative tool for information exchange and project collaboration [1]. IM is identified as being effective as a problem-solving tool in the following ways: · Speeding up exchange of information · Posing quick questions · Making clarifications · Arranging and coordinating richer media collaborations · Problem solving through a network of people · Solicit an immediate response. However, the paper also explores the social processes of such a collaborative tool. Connectedness is fostered through IM, but whether it is positive or negative depends on the characteristics of the actors' relationships. These social processes are manifest in the form of power, social relationships and workplace norms. The social translucence of technology (STT) framework is used to examine their collaborative processes. The article focuses on STT's three characteristics and determines the following: 1. Visibility - IM has several key visibility features that allow the users to indicate their availability to communicate and interact. 2. Awareness - This is strongly connected to the social framework of the actors and their connectedness with each other. 3. Accountability -It is dependent on whether a workers status is higher or lower within the organisation. It recognises that IM is a lean media and, when used within the context of few social cues and less complex knowledge issues, it can foster a good sense of community, provide for ad hoc exchanges, and speed up the process of information exchange. However, it also recognises that the social processes involved must be considered in terms of whether this connectedness is perceived as positive or negative, whether it is used to create distance, and a person's hierarchical position within the company.

With a report found on Sales Force's website, Predicts 2010: Customer Service Meets Social CRM (Maoz, Jacobs, Davies, & Thompson, 2009), finds that tapping into social networks improve marketing, sales and service processes; when planning social networking projects, consideration about the dominant social networking sites needs to be addressed; and by 2011, all customers will be able to perform their own self-service functions on CRM packages.     Edmodo is a free private social network for education, which is easy and simple to use. (Edmodo, 2010) It creates an online learning space that is safe and secure, where teachers and students can interact and connect with each other. Edmodo can be used in the classroom and also after class when students are at home. Its layout has a similar look and feel to existing social media tools such as Facebook, and the operation of the site is similar to Twitter, where posts are made live instantly. Since Edmodo is similar to existing social media websites, students see schoolwork as being fun, and "are comfortable with using Edmodo at home and logging on and talking about school work" (abc7, 2010) Edmodo works by users creating a teacher or student account. Teacher's accounts allow them to create groups for example, Math Class Red and Math Class Green. Students can join groups by entering a unique code provided by the teacher. This prevents and limits who can join the group. (Thomas, 2010) Teachers can use Edmodo to post messages and files, send links to websites, create and send assignments, send back assignment results and create polls. Edmodo allows teachers to send these to individuals, groups or everyone in the class. Student's accounts allow them to message the teacher, groups or everyone in the class, but prevents them messaging one another. By doing this, it avoids student's instant messaging each other, (Thomas, 2010) and only allows them to use Edmodo for educational purposes.

    Most internet users have a list of favourite websites they visit regularly and depending on what browser you use they are known as "bookmarks" or "favourites". Bookmarks can end up being a long list of unorganized information and can be frustrating if not kept updated and maintained. Also if you use more than one computer it can be difficult to keep track and ensure bookmarks are current. Delicious is a tool which alleviates these problems. Delicious enables "users to tag, save, manage and share web pages from a centralized source" [1]. Not only are you able to share your bookmarks with your friends but you also have access to the most current information on the web. You can look at the most popular tags discussing the information you are interested in. There is also a space to leave a comment or description of the site. As Stolley suggests, Delicious allows users to build a network of users who are interested in the same topics and from a workplace perspective everyone in a work environment can access the same valuable information [2]. Delicious is about sharing information and with so much information publicly available on the web today it makes it easier to have other people find the information you require. As with any tool it is important to be organized and tag relevant websites appropriately otherwise it loses its value and it can become useless for other users. Using Delicious bookmarks can assist users in time management ensuring that they are able to access and share with their peers popular websites and links relevant to their project, whether that project is for personal or business use or for academic research. When working collaboratively on a project such as a team researching a topic, by using the Delicious bookmarking tool users are able to save important bookmarks and tags allowing the groups user to contribute web resource links to the tag and thus making it easier to share references. Users also have the ability to tag bookmarks and collaboratively come up with a list of items which reflect each tag. Delicious has a number of free tools available to make collaboration easier such as browser extensions the major internet browsers, badges and tagrolls/linkrolls for blogs and websites [2].     Del.icio.us is a social bookmarking manger website, which allows individuals to save, tag, manage and share their collection of bookmarks with others. (About , n.d.) The website is a database of bookmarks, creating a collaboration of users bookmarked websites. Its "a growing source of human generated content." (Kolay & Dasdan, 2009) Previously to save a website URL, users would bookmark them in their web browser located on one computer. With no order, URL's would be hard to find. Now Del.icio.us allows users to bookmark their URL's in an organised online space, on any computer with an Internet connection. Introduced in 2003, (Millien, Feinberg & Kerr, 2005) this free website, allows anyone to register and create an account. Once registered, Del.icio.us buttons are installed and appear on the web browser. (LeFever, 2009) These buttons assist in making bookmarking quick and easy. When bookmarking a site, a users clicks on the Del.icio.us tag button, which allows the users to add tags and keywords. (LeFever, 2009) These are words that are related to the website and help searching for the webpage at a later date. By using tags, it allows users to search by tag or keyword, narrowing search results and saving time. Del.icio.us creates a network, with constant updates of new and interesting bookmarks being added to the website. (LeFever, 2009) Bookmarks are made public so anyone can search the Del.icio.us website by tag or keyword and a list of websites collaborated from registered users are displayed. One of the features of Officemedium is the client integration which allows the business to create user accounts for their clients which allows them to access only the information meant for them. The software is simplistic and centralised.     This article talks about the issue of socio-cultural distance in distributed software development teams and methods to bridge this gap when using a collaborative software development environment. After discussing the various collaborative development environments available to developers, it goes on to talk about integrating FriendFeed micro blog and content aggregation service with IBM's Jazz, a plugin for the Eclipse Integrated Development Environment. By integrating Friendfeed into the collaborative development environment, it is possible to reduce the socio-cultural distance that would otherwise be present if the development was done in a traditional office environment. Examples given included if a developer used LibraryThing to post a review of a book they had read, this would be revealed to the other developers who might be interested in the book which would give them a greater understanding of the developer's interests and become a possible conversation piece. Another example given was where the developers on a team were from different backgrounds such as the difference between American and Indian culture. It was stated that in Indian culture, it would be disrespectful to disagree with a senior developer. It was hoped that through making the development environment more collaborative and social, it would be possible to reduce cultural walls that would make it difficult for the parties to interact in a productive manner. While the article gives examples of the benefits of a more social collaborative development environment, specifically how their FriendFeed plugin for IBM's Jazz could bring these benefits. These do not seem to be based on an actual situation (case study) but rather seem to on how the authors imagine their plugin being used - perhaps based on their own experience in software development. This brings the reliability of the article into question and at the very least, indicates an area for further study.

Additions to Documentum eRoom include real time services, collaboration management capabilities, Microsoft Project compatibility and a secure online shared environment. The eRoom Family of software has been a major player in the field of collaboration over the last ten years. EMC released a document about what they regard as their top 10 tips regarding what a SMB (medium to small businesses) should look for when considering web-based collaboration software. This document can be located at http://www.retrospect.com/assets/Top10_WebCollab_en.pdf. So how does EMC's very own software hold up these top 10 tips? DLA Piper Rudnick is mostly a US based law firm, forty offices, which required an easy and secure method to collaborate online. "The verdict: use of EMC's Documentum eRoom, a web-based collaboration platform that allows for secure information sharing" [2]. DLA Piper was deciding between Lotus QuickPlace and Documentum eRoom and stated that eRoom scored the battle because "eRoom's functionality and ease of use won out" [2]. EMC's top 10 tips echo this statement; "workspaces that are easy to manage" and "collaboration software should be flexible" [3]. However, even though eRoom has a proven history of being reliable software, they faced a new battle of collaboration-software competition.

In an effort to keep up with technology EMC created "Centre Stage: moving beyond collaboration" [4]. In addition, the popularity of Microsoft's SharePoint has increased competition between the two products with companies migrating from eRoom. With such competition, a free version called CentreStage Essentials was released: the"version is a "limited" release of CenterStage. It does include storing documents in folder and attachment boxes like in eRoom, plus a few other features.     "Communication, Collaboration, and Bugs: The Social Nature of Issue Tracking in Software Engineering" (Bertram, Voida, Greenberg, & Walker, 2010) This article, written by the Department of Computer Science, University of Calgary, is a qualitative study of a group of software development teams that make use of one or more formal issue tracking systems and examines the social aspects that reside within the software engineering and bug tracking process. They argue that an issue tracker is not just a system for tracking bugs but becomes a focal point for all stakeholders of the program including engineers, users, designers and owners.     One of the attractive features of Slideshare is the ability to not only upload presentations for online display, however by using their Leadshare application you can collect and update customer contacts. Leadshare also allows the user to link the presentation to the business contact details. Slideshare can be embedded in your web page, blogs and social networks at no extra cost. Kelly, (2010) explains that Slideshare has a number of additional features which enhance its use. These include presentations that have audio tracks known as 'Slidecasts' and a plugin which allows presentations to be uploaded directly from the Powerpoint tool. It also has plugins to allow access from networking services such as Facebook and Linkedin. Slideshare as demonstrated by Mullen, (2009) is a great way of presenting information.     Mindjet [5] is best known for its mind mapping software but with the introduction of Catalyst [5] in October 2009 Mindjet released the power of their mapping software to the web. Catalyst is an online mapping tool that is delivered on a subscription service across the web. It enables team members to co-edit a map in real time. Members can brainstorm ideas, design business process, store their documents in a secure and centralised workspace and keep a work log of all changes. Catalyst also augments the support of social networking tools to help share the vision [1]. Currently the service is delivered as a subscription service charged at $25/user/month plus an extra $25 for web conferencing moderators. Catalyst runs on all major browsers [4] but it must have Adobe Flash Player 9.0 enabled. "We think better in picture than text and how that can that be related to business process" Scott Raskin CEO of Mindjet (Howlett, 2009). "Catalyst team members can simultaneously video-conference while modifying a shared document on an online " (Chapman, 2009). While this online collaborative mapping tool is impressive an area of consideration is the fact that it does not alert team members of asynchronous changes [3] via IM or email. Alerting team members of change during a project is an important feature for collaborative tools as discussed in the research study by Daniela Damian M. Sc. [2] which looks at how real projects actually use collaboration tools and what were their main areas of use and importance are. However, with the inclusion of social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter this oversight could be overcome with good project management practices.

"Privacy protections are essential to building the customer trust needed for cloud computing and the internet to reach their full potential." Stafford warns that a lot of cloud computing services don't have their own infrastructure but rent from others. This will necessarily be the smaller companies. Customers of SharePoint can be assured that "sophisticated controls for securing company resources" have been thoroughly integrated into the product as it is backed by years of research from Microsoft. (Stafford, P. 2009) SharePoint encourages 3rd party developers to develop custom modifications or to incorporate SharePoint into existing collaboration software. Microsoft Sharepoint 2010 Social Fest was a, 'competition by invite', to ten, cloud-collaboration, IT companies who each came up with some unique new way of utilizing SharePoint into their own collaborative platforms. SharePoint has a built in editor that allows some customization. SharePoint 2010 will provide deeper integration with Office 2010 soon to be available for retail sales.     Scribblar is similar to other online whiteboards like Dabbleboard, Skrbl and ImaginationCubed. Walsh [1] is an avid researcher into internet and instructional technologies. A review of Scribblar against the other abovementioned tools showed up some differences. Users should be aware that the free edition does not allow saving or importing of files. There is no online help so it's a bit of a guessing game however it did appear to be fairly intuitive. [1] It is a fairly new product and will most likely evolve over time and improve on its shortcomings. A practical use of this tool for a designer would be the ability to load designs for a client to review in real time. In spite of remote location, the artwork changes can be drawn on the whiteboard and discussed in the chat window or using the audio feature at the same time in this online environment. [2] In the classroom, while students could create projects with Scribblar, it's most ideal for planning projects through brainstorming or mind-mapping.[ Armed with an array of pencils, line and shape tools. colours and a big white canvas, it does make student collaboration really easy. {3]

Along with DeepZoom, another strength Colaab has is the ability to create three "different levels of Workspace access (Organiser, Participant, Viewer) make controlling user permissions and privileges very easy indeed" [1]. Colaab suggests that the product is particularly useful for design projects that involve professions such as web designers, writers, architects, etc., that require communication and collaboration. However, she argues that technology should only be a supportive tool to intranet webmasters and knowledge managers, and not the driving force behind them when creating a community of collaborators.     SugarCRM is an open source database management system. It is important to be able to manage customer databases without having to collate numerous spreadsheets of customer information. With SugarCRM it simplifies being able to organize and track people, companies and sales opportunities [1]. Another advantage of SugarCRM is the ability to measure and report customer information across your company [2]. SugarCRM Community Edition is a free application and it is open source so the software can be altered to suit the users' needs. Not all companies have the same requirements when it comes to implementing a CRM, so the advantage of using SugarCRM is it gives users the flexibility to modify the source code [3]. To gain greater benefits of SugarCRM there is a professional edition for US$360 per licence or the Sugar Enterprise Edition for US$600 per licence [4]. A CRM solution will focus on automating and improving current processes and practices mainly supporting sales, marketing, customer service and support as Gupta & Shukla (2002) attest [5]. Implementing a CRM can be a risky business according to Bohling, et al (2006) [6]. Depending on the size of the organization and the current CRM system in operation, if any, implementing a CRM requires plenty of planning and preparation.
