    Amazing resource for lesson plans, worksheets, and games to teach students about a wide variety of music topics. This website would be great for creating lesson plans for subs and would also be a great resource if you can't find printed worksheets that address theory. The games are also fun and educational, asking students to identify instruments, tempos, etc. and can act as quizzes that can be scored and printed out. Great resource!

Ms. Garrett offers free lessons, worksheets and assessments that can be downloaded as .pdfs and used by any teachers looking for materials that could be used within their own classrooms.     Toby W. Rush provides fifty PDFs for public use on his website "Music Theory for Musicians and Normal People." He not only invites people to print the PDFs but encourages teachers to make copies and use these resources in the classroom. There are worksheets on everything from simple meter to minor scales and counterpoint. He breaks the worksheets into topics: fundamentals, diatonic harmony, development and form, chromatic harmony, and counterpoint. This a great page to keep in mind for any age group or music classroom.

    I found this site while discovering music technology for Module 5. This is a great interactive game for elementary age children who are or have studied instruments, instrument families, and the orchestra. It teaches the player new information, assesses their understanding of that information, and has opportunities for further study.

    The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra allows students to learn all about the different instruments in the orchestra, as well as listening examples of classical pieces of music. The games provide a brief lesson, and then students can participate through interactive games. I find this site very informative and the kids love the story line that goes along with the game sequence. Great resource in preparation for our annual Young People's Concert at the Bob Carr in Orlando.

    This website is a game developed by Carnegie Hall that helps younger students learn the instruments of the orchestra. The game uses Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. This interactive game helps students understand the layout of an orchestra, the ranges of the individual instruments, and how they sound individually and together in an ensemble. This is an excellent tool for elementary music!

    This website is suitable for teachers who give students free time to work on music games. Many different music topics are taught by the music teachers and a better way for students to retain the information would include turning some of their assignments into competition. One thing i have learned, elementary students love to be competitive, so if the students are able to get high scores on music games, then they are retaining and getting the information.

  • This is a really fun practice game for upper elementary and middle school! I also love this game for older beginners because it is an easy way to take those easy ta and titi rhythms and really make a more challenging game.

      We used to do a game like this for theatre. I would love to use this as a beginning of the year activity for assessment, or a way to practice certain parts for a concert.
  • This could be done as an ostinato pattern that is repeated, or you could rotate through a set of cards for the students to play.

      I like the idea of using cue cards with simple rhythmic ostinatos to accompany a cd track. You could introduce the ostinatos before the activity and practice by switching between cards. Once the kids feel comfortable, play the song and use the cue cards.
  • Use rhythm flashcards to create a song that the students know well. Have the students clap and read the rhythms and see if they can figure out the mystery song.

For instance, you may type in ii V I and bopland will search for all licks in its database that can satisfy a ii V I progression. It is very helpful for jazz classes and for students stuck on improvisation creativity.

The purpose of this site is to inform people about the importance of music eduction and keep them updated about the important events happening today that may change the state of music education. My school district was actually recognized as one of the districts to receive "Best Community for Music Education" by NAMM. Not only is this site useful for music educators, but it also has articles about the role of community members and administrators in advocating for music education.

    String Bass Online is a website devoted to the string bass. It includes information about string bass basics, such as how to set up the bass and start playing the bass, bass fingering charts, bass care, bass practice tips, how to read music, and much more. It also has free sheet music for the bass and exercises specifically for the bass. Finally, it offers a string class that discusses string music throughout history. These websites are great because they keep everything instrument specific rather than covering all the instruments together.

In about 3 minutes time I was able to locate about a half dozen pieces that I've been looking for at some point or another since I started teaching.     This is another invaluable resource of Public Domain compositions for the Band World. So many of the old marches and waltzes are out of print and difficult to come by, but this website has an extensive list of great works that are all public domain.     Making Music Fun is a great website for resources for music educators. There are tons of theory worksheets (some more appropriate for elementary school students), lessons, composer biographies and worksheets, and activities for the music classroom. There is also a library of piano music that is well-written for beginners and available in a variety of levels. Some features over the years now require purchase, but there are still tons of resources available for free.

    The Sight Reading Factory generates excerpts of music based on parameters entered by the user. It is especially useful for practicing specific areas of music-reading skills (e.g. bass clef, odd-meters, difficult rhythms), or reinforcing general concepts of reading traditionally-notated music. While the site is good for the practice of mechanics, one might argue that robotically-created music is less useful for the development of musicality (or that computer-composed music isn't "music" at all). Excerpts can be generated for individuals singing or playing instruments, or for ensembles. There is also a section for solfege pattern practice. This resource creates sheet music excerpts for reading practice, without much regard to form or structure--it does not generate full works of literature for performance.

    This site is great for finding flash cards for all of the string instruments. Front and back flash cards are able to be printed from a PDF format. The notes are big enough for students and also has the fingerings as well as the notes written on the back.

    The graphics on this website are amazing- any child would enjoy browsing through and learning about musical instruments, composition, and composers. Also very neat is the game where you can "play" different musical instruments. The numbers on the computer keypad become notes in a scale!
