This is a fantastic resource that I have been using for many years. There are many options for lessons among the music elements, which are customizable for different levels of difficulty. My favorite to use this site for is identifying pitches. I can customize the lesson to only include specific pitches and ranges, and even with sharps and flats.

The Musictheory.net website is a comprehensive platform focused on teaching music theory. The purpose of the website is to teach or reinforce music theory concepts at all levels of experience. There are numerous free lessons available that cover many aspects of music theory. There are also numerous customizable exercises to help reinforce the concepts learned in the lessons. Teachers can utilize this website at all levels of performing arts. I have found success with using the note name identification exercise as I can choose exactly what notes the students are practicing.

Classics for kids is a great website where you can read and learn about different composers and classical music. There are links to podcasts and listening maps for the students to actively engage in. There are also composer biographies and other great resources.

This provides easy and practical shows and lessons for students and teachers. Masters of classical music: Bach, Mozart and Kodaly to name of a few are easily accessible for young age groups. 

This is an excellent website for listening to classical music, as well as, activities to accompany the music. Composer and piece information is written in kid friendly terminology.

This music resource page is a great way to have students learn about classical composers and not take up too much precious rehearsal time. Students can go on the page and select a podcast of the history of the composers being studied during a particular season. Then they can submit a short write up based on the podcast and have short discussions before rehearsal.

There are interactive games for development of rhythm, composition, and note naming skills, as well as loads of information on composers, music professions, and music time periods.You can also access some prominent compositions for students to listen to, as well as activity sheets for your students to complete based on a composer, or genre of music.

The Music Tech Teacher site is an online extension of Karen Garrett's band and music technology class. On the site, she provides lessons, quizzes, and artifacts of student work. One nice feature is the scrolling set of images with students modeling the activities that take place in the piano lab.

This is my favorite site for games that can be used as informal, formative assessments. There are many options under the "Quizzes/Pianos" tab. The games can be played as a class using the smartboard, or individually if you're lucky enough to get time in the computer lab.

For anyone looking for musical games targeted towards the younger elementary grades, this is a great source to look to. It has all of your favorite PBS characters engaged in interesting musical activities such as painting, recording, and genre guessing. I'd recommend this site to all general music elementary teachers!

This website provides many musical games for children ages 3-6. There are games which include opportunities for children to create music, identify instrument sounds, and explore rhythms.

Some of these music games don't seem very educational to me, but I think that they offer a variety of musical style games which could be interested for my 5th graders. I think that the zen musical composition games aren't too "babyish" (as my students would say) for the 5th grade students. However, it's something I would need to explore more.

I explored Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, which I think would be perfect for my three year old. She can click using the arrows or mouse to create different sounds, and even explore different moods of music (happy, sad etc). The title says it all. This is a collection of music education blogs, covering all kinds of topics.

The Music Education Blogs link contains links to blogs for all sorts of music educators.  The links are catered to specific school settings, teaching methodologies, ensembles, and free online services.  I enjoyed exploring several of the blogs because blogging is something I've just become acquainted to within my graduate studies with the University of Florida's Online Master of Music.  For example, I clicked on the "Elementary Blogs" tab to see what some of my elementary music educator colleagues have to say/share.  A handful of links to other teachers' blogs and websites were made available at a click of the mouse.  I clicked on the first link, "Mrs. Miracle's Music Room," and was able to read posts from "Mrs. Miracle" about her teaching strategies for classroom management when utilizing technology.  Her blog contained other features like a personal bio and links.  My blog for this course doesn't contain those things, and perhaps exploring the blogger.com website more would allow me to make similar changes to my Blog. Being able to share ideas within any online community, in this case a blogging community, could be so useful for any sort of educator.  Considering we are currently enrolled in an online Master of Music program, we are capable of sharing ideas from across the country and even across the globe.  This blog link just makes that possibility more accessible with more educators.

MakingMusicFun.net provides worksheets, lesson plans, and other resources for elementary music teachers. Premium users have access to more resources.

Making Music Fun is a great website for resources for music educators. There are tons of theory worksheets (some more appropriate for elementary school students), lessons, composer biographies and worksheets, and activities for the music classroom. There is also a library of piano music that is well-written for beginners and available in a variety of levels. Some features over the years now require purchase, but there are still tons of resources available for free.

This website is one of my favorites for finding elementary sub plans, fun note-naming worksheets, and other fun worksheets for kids.

Carnegie Hall is one of the premier concert venues in the United States. Their website is full of resources for both music teachers and their students to explore the world of music.

This is a website that has several different contributors. Each contributor posts articles about different projects they are doing using music technology. A lot of the articles give hands-on information from using the technology in a classroom. This would be very beneficial to teachers in all settings.

This blog is an amazing resource about technology in music education. The 5 co-authors present a plethora of resources, and write about their personal experiences using them.

Mrs. Miracle's Music Room is a blog dedicated to elementary music education. This website provides viewers with Mrs. Miracle's podcast, as well as, music literature, tips for teaching different grade levels and different music learning styles. The website also provides the viewer with free materials that they can use in their classroom and assessments. Technology is a big focus of Mrs. Miracle's blog.

This wonderful site, created by, offers free content-packed theory guides for both the experienced musician and the notation novice. The handy reference guides can be downloaded and saved for future use, as long as they are not being sold.

Toby W. Rush provides fifty PDFs for public use on his website "Music Theory for Musicians and Normal People." He not only invites people to print the PDFs but encourages teachers to make copies and use these resources in the classroom. There are worksheets on everything from simple meter to minor scales and counterpoint. He breaks the worksheets into topics: fundamentals, diatonic harmony, development and form, chromatic harmony, and counterpoint. This a great page to keep in mind for any age group or music classroom.

This website offers music theory worksheets that are friendly for musicians and "normal people". These would be a great addition to an interactive notebook at the upper elementary and middle school general music level.

This blog is written by a Kodaly elementary school teacher who shares everything from resources she's used, to resources she's created herself and sharing through Teachers Pay Teachers. She also blogs about her experiences with taking interests of her students and turning them into an activity to do with learning music literacy. And if your teaching style represents the Kodaly teaching style, she has many tips and tricks for this to make our students successful and life-long music lovers.

San Francisco Kids is a website that is attractive and fun for children. There are lessons and interactive composing activities that are helpful and informative for kids who are new to music.

The San Francisco Symphony has a great website for kids that has some great activities. Students can explore music and composers throughout history. They learn interesting facts about composers and their music. They also get to listen to music. There are also fun games and activities for them to do.

I love using this website to teach about the orchestra. There are so many interactive activities that involve the orchestra, music theory, composition, conducting, and many other activities.

Site produced by the San Francisco Symphony. Includes music listening presentations, music games, and composition activities. Great for elementary general music and very child friendly.

A wonderful resource for young children from the San Francisco Orchestra. This website allows children to discover, listen, play, perform, conduct, and compose in a child-friendly format.

This is a website that covers musical composers and music instruments. I love using this site to help teach the instruments of the orchestra to my younger kids because it includes images and sound clips. There are also games that students can play and compose with instruments.

This is a great resource for listening, playing, and learning more about the instruments. It is suitable for young students (Pre-K to 3rd grade students). It does not require a subscription, but Adobe Flash Player should be installed.
