This website is a great resource for K-5 music.  There are jokes, games, and information regarding famous composers, including recordings of famous pieces of music.  This can be used by a classroom of kids in a computer lab, or by a teacher for lesson planning.

Classics for Kids is a resources for teachers, parents, and children. It provides lesson plans, music games and interactive links, a podcast, tips for parents, and information about composers, instruments, and music history. The lesson plans (written by my former music education professor, Dr. Kay Edwards) are standards-based and incorporate elements of Orff, Kodaly, and Dalcroze.

This website has profiles for several baroque, classical, romantic and 20th century composers. Each page seems easy to ready, and has video links as well as links to sources.

This website would be a useful resource for history facts about composers form multiple musical periods. Wynn Literature is a site I found a few years ago as I was looking for music for my high school Intermediate Band to play for the Georgia Music Educators Association's Large Group Performance Evaluation (concert festival). The band I had one year was unprepared to play most Grade 4 Literature and I needed help choosing Grade 2 or 3 pieces. Wynn created this list of compositions that are on the GMEA LGPE required list. It is important to double check the most current LGPE list as the list is updated yearly. The compositions are written by composers whose works have been deemed to be "Contemporary Concert Band Standards" as they have the best mix of challenging the students as well as entertaining. Some of the composers include James Swearingen, Quincy Hilliard Robert W. Smith, David R. Holsinger, and James Curnow just to name a few. The site has changed a lot since I originally found it. You were able to click on the individual compositions to get more information about the piece such as key signature, meter, performance ranges for most of the instruments, technical issues that may occur (difficult rhythms or harmonies), background on the composer and historical perspective of the composition. Since the site's links do not work anymore, WynnLiterature is a great starting point to search for literature to play at the middle school level as well as the lower/developmental bands in high school.

This is not the most user friendly website but it provides names of composers and their works for 20th c. composers and specifically electronic music. 

Database of information about many composers. Includes biographical information as well as a detailed list of composers according to the styles of music he or she composed as well as a list of where composers are geographically. Could be used as a great online scavenger hunt website, or a database for students to select composers for a research project.

Brought to you by Teachers Pay Teachers, this resource revolves around music history and middle school students studying composers. At only $5, it provides a 2 week interactive unit on composers and includes project guidelines, composer lists (baroque, classical and romantic composers), rubrics, and more.

This is another Orchestra-sponsored website with fun activities for kids. It can be used during spare time, or units could be developed around it. The game I found which I liked in particular is called "Beethoven's Baseball". You get to pick your composer team, and then click on Beethoven to throw the "pitches", which are questions. The game keeps your score and is interactive. The website also has a "listen by composer" section, as well as other instructions for activities including making your own instrument.

This site provides insight on instrument timbres, symbol and note recognition, reinforce knowledge on composers, and more! In terms of composers, this site covers composers from as early as the Renaissance era to present.

Dallas Symphony Orchestra's website specifically for kids. Provides games, activities, and several listening examples. Can be used at home or in the classroom.

What a great resource site for music recordings! Our student computers block YouTube, thus this site will be great for my students who wish to research and listen to new music. Currently, a second grade "reading" group will be writing biographies of composers, and I want them to be able to listen to their compositions.

This website offers free music streams and downloads. This is all royalty free music which makes the streams and downloads completely legal and free. The site allows you to search by composer, performer, period, form, and numerous other ways.

Classics For Kids is a great website with fun activities and music resources for use in the classroom. Each month, they feature a different composer and provide activities, handouts, and listening maps that help students learn about various topics in classical music history. There are also online games for kids and lesson plans for teachers.

IMSLP is on online library of music that is now held in the public domain. It is a resource that can be freely used to print copies of music for use in your classroom for free! This resource is especially useful for string orchestras, as entire catalogs of music from such great composers as Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven can be found in the archive.

Over 119,000 compositions in the public domain can be found here for free. This is a great resource for musicians and can be used for research, performing, and arranging. Some pieces include recordings.

This is an excellent Podcast series explaining what is Music Composition, how to compose, and tricks of the trade. Jon Brantingham covers the theory of composing/orchestration and talks about the creative aspects of it as well as interviews notable author/composers.

The San Francisco Symphony has created a way for composers and their work to come alive for students. Through this site, students can learn about various composers, musical techniques, musical history, and scores by way of working through "evidence" to arrive at conclusions about given pieces.

With minor adjustments this can be a great resource to use for the "Composer of the Month." Mozart is not the composer of the month until January, but using this format can be helpful for use when presenting on other composers. 

The graphics on this website are amazing- any child would enjoy browsing through and learning about musical instruments, composition, and composers. Also very neat is the game where you can "play" different musical instruments. The numbers on the computer keypad become notes in a scale!

This is owned and operated by the San Francisco symphony. It requires Adobe flash so desktop computers are suggested for use.

This is a website that i have used with my students, more so free time. Allowing to practice their skill but also have fun doing it as it relates to games. The purpose of this would be for students to explore having fun with music!.

It's easy to teach and celebrate the classic composers: Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, etc., but this article discusses ways to incorporate the composers that are still alive today that are still creating new media in our art form.

The American Composers Forum BandQuest program brings some of the best living composers together to write music for school wind bands. Many works in the series incorporate a cross curricular element that connects to disciplines outside of music.

This software is a easy way for students to make, create, compose, their own music. The purpose of this source would be to help student come up with creative ways to make music, using a famous interface call Ableton push. It makes it easy for the composer to create loops, and other things using this software. It comes with many features, like effects, vocals, built in instruments, and loops. There is more than enough tools for the composer to use, to create different types of music.
