Hotel Technology's Paradigm Shift: The Age of Interconnectivity - 0 views

  •
This article discusses the hospitality industry's developing technology sector, claiming an age of interconnectivity. This industry has long been plagued by the stereotype of being behind technologically, largely due to long standing and set-in ways that utilize old systems. A few numbers worth mentioning include enterprise hospitality spending an average of 3.5 percent of revenue on IT versus 7.9 percent for financial services, 6.1 percent for public sector, and 5.9 for high tech. In a study done by Lodging Technology Study, 53 percent of hoteliers cited that the outdated tech architecture set-in and the effort it would take to change them is what keeps people from investing in new technologies. Fortunately since then, this sector has been gaining momentum, expecting to be the fastest growing IT sector between 2018 and 2021. The article continues on talking about the barrier of integration fees and how tech innovators today are forced to pay massive fees to be compatible with existing systems, which carry on to consumers of these technologies. For hoteliers to utilize these new technologies, large sums of money have to be paid upfront and there's a significant lag in actually getting to try the product. The rest of the article discusses a few points we do in this week's module: pros and cons to two-way interconnectivity in PMS systems and third party technology providers.

Bed & Breakfasts | Email Marketing | StreamSend - 1 views

  • Bed and breakfasts often do not get the opportunity to market their businesses the way they should
  • With email marketing software, marketing has now become more affordable than ever – even for a quaint bed and breakfast.

  • When innkeepers send an email blast with easy-to-use email marketing software, customers can see updates to the breakfast menu, local weather conditions for their weekend stay, special offers for specific events within your area or even special weekend packages!
  • Email blasts are a great way to keep customers engaged and up to date with your bed and breakfast.
  • With email marketing driven by the power of the internet and social media, bed and breakfasts can bring together those with a passion for travel, pampering, sightseeing and first class food; what a magnificent combination!

The lodging industry is one of the most popular in the hospitality industry. Bed and Breakfasts provide an alternative to hotels and motels by providing a literal home away from home experience. Unfortunately, the advertising and marketing of a bed a breakfast, according to this article, needs to upgrade. Email marketing would be a great addition to this sector of the industry to promote deals, updated breakfast menus, and etc. Giving customers an email blast every now and then can help. This can also increase customer loyalty. According to the article, it is a great way to keep customers engaged and up to date. The article promotes StreamSend, which is an email marketing software that helps with marketing by including vibrant imagery, videos, surveys, and other interactive elements (StreamSend). This is also said to be affordable and dependable, making it ideal for any industry including a bed and breakfast. I think this is a great start, specifically for those in the bed and breakfast sector of hospitality. The bed and breakfast brings airbnb and a hotel together with different amenities and not just another place to stay for the night. So it makes sense for the innkeepers to jump into email marketing to promote their business in different ways and to have more access to guests in regards to promotions.

Soaring e-waste affects the health of millions of children, WHO warns - 0 views

  • As many as 12.9 million women are working in the informal waste sector, which potentially exposes them to toxic e-waste and puts them and their unborn children at risk.Meanwhile more than 18 million children and adolescents, some as young as 5 years of age, are actively engaged in the informal industrial sector, of which waste processing is a sub-sector. Children are often engaged by parents or caregivers in e-waste recycling because their small hands are more dexterous than those of adults. Other children live, go to school and play near e-waste recycling centres where high levels of toxic chemicals, mostly lead and mercury, can damage their intellectual abilities
  • For an expectant mother, exposure to toxic e-waste can affect the health and development of her unborn child for the rest of its life. Potential adverse health effects include negative birth outcomes, such as stillbirth and premature births, as well as low birth weight and length.  Exposure to lead from e-waste recycling activities has been associated with significantly reduced neonatal behavioural neurological assessment scores, increased rates of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), behavioural problems, changes in child temperament, sensory integration difficulties, and reduced cognitive and language scores.
  • A rapidly escalating problem

Meeting the Threat in 2019: Cybersecurity for the Hospitality Sector | Modern Restauran... - 0 views

  • With a reputation as less well guarded than similar institutions, hospitality companies are a popular target for cyberattacks.
  • Experts warn other hackers, like those working for a nation-state, could exploit hospitality breaches like Marriott’s to acquire details on the travel and spending habits of espionage targets, like CEOs and diplomats.
  • permeable security in the hospitality sector threatens consumer privacy, shareholder value, and national security.
  • ...15 more annotations...
  • many hospitality companies are reconsidering their cybersecurity infrastructure. However, industry specific challenges like high employee turnover continue to expose the sector.[6]Additionally, even by adopting cutting-edge cybersecurity technologies, the important question of strategic implementation remains.
  • Are newly introduced technologies simply bolstering traditional methods of cybersecurity, or are they being used for methods of cybersecurity that are new and innovative, instead of simply faster or more efficient versions of the same product?
  • Traditional cybersecurity approaches are focused on reporting about intrusions after the fact, in what is known as an “incident response.”
  • Regardless of how they gain access, once an attacker is discovered, the forensics about the attack, including basic information known as Indicators of Compromise (IOCs) like IP addresses, domain names, or malware hashes, are shared across the cybersecurity community. These IOCs are then used broadly to thwart future attacks.
  • The problems with this approach are twofold:
  • someone has to be a victim first so that IOCs can be derived and shared with others; additionally, blocking IOCs has a very short half-life.
  • All an adversary has to do is come from a new IP address or recompile their malware so that it has a new hash value (both of which are extremely trivial) and their attacks will sail through defenses that depend on IOCs.
  • As hackers repeatedly gain access to valuable systems and data using the same methods, cybersecurity teams continue to chase after them to secure compromised systems.
  • Very little cybersecurity effort is put towards addressing the methods used by adversaries; instead, security teams are locked in a pattern of waiting for inevitable attacks, trying to minimize the damage they cause, ensuring that remediation occurs as quickly as possible, and blocking only exactly identical attacks.
  • Incident response only helps prevent attacks that exactly replicate past ones.
  • a more proactive, sophisticated approach is needed. It will need to be designed to successfully recognize adversary methodology (and all the manners in which an adversary attempts to obfuscate their methodology) before attacks occur and at a meaningful scale.
  • Instead of seeking discrete, static IoCs based solely on what has already occurred, proactive cybersecurity analysts can instead use the intelligence they have derived about adversaries’ methodologies – commonly referred to as tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP).
  • From these TTPs, analysts can identify the general form and components of an adversary campaign. In addition, they can determine abstract indicators like how the adversary is attempting to hide his actions.
  •  A proactive cybersecurity tool would be able to recognize possible adversary TTPs and indicators that describe a threat (or threatening behavior) in general terms. The system would then act on any traffic which met this pattern before it reaches inside a network, as the attack occurs, and do so in a way invisible to adversaries.
  • Using this basic model, a cybersecurity tool could truly prevent common exploits before they were executed, and could even predict and protect against future, not yet seen exploits.
  •
In the wake of the Marriott International cyberattack, the article presents the issues with the current issues in the methodology of cybersecurity; first explaining the data of how popular they are in the hospitality industry, and what it means for the industry, before going into the process of how a cyberattack happens and the measures taken to prevent it. Traditional cybersecurity is one of an "incident response" which can only be implemented once a cyberattack occurs and can only prevent it temporarily as a hacker can do similar tasks with different IP addresses and new malware. In order to circumvent this failure of cybersecurity, the article offers a new method in which TTPs (tactics, techniques, and procedures), are used to identify certain components of a hacker and identify how they would carry out an attack, before acting on it before the attack would "reach the network".
  •
This article discusses one of the largest fears of most hospitality firms, and that is keeping their client's personal information private. Most large companies in this industry have become giant data centers for the personal information of millions of people. Breaches of this type of information place the lives of many people at stake. For example, Marriott International had a security breach of over half a billion of its clients which began in 2014 and was not detected until September of this year. Keeping an individual's information away from malignant forces is just plain business sense and any more attacks of this manner will severely hurt the reputation of the business experiencing it.

Meeting the Threat in 2019: Cybersecurity for the Hospitality Sector | Hospitality Tech... - 0 views

  • Meeting the Threat in 2019: Cybersecurity for the Hospitality Sector
  • Marriott International revealed that a massive cyberattack compromised personal information for up to half a billion individual guests of its properties.[1] The data breach ranks as the second largest known theft of sensitive personal records to date.
  • This marks the second major cybersecurity failure for Starwood, the Marriott division affected. Before being acquired by Marriott in 2016, the company’s cash register system was penetrated by malware looking to steal credit card information. [3] Other major organizations in the hospitality industry, including Hilton and Hyatt, have reported similar attacks. In 2017, for example, Holiday Inn parent company InterContinental Hotels discovered a breach lasting three months and affecting 1,200 properties. With a reputation as less well guarded than similar institutions, hospitality companies are a popular target for cyberattacks.

  • Traditional cybersecurity approaches are focused on reporting about intrusions after the fact, in what is known as an “incident response.” What this means is that an adversary—commonly referred to as a “hacker”—finds some way to gain access to a target and compromises it. The target can be accessed through vulnerabilities in web frameworks, internet browsers, or internet infrastructure such as routers and modems. Regardless of how they gain access, once an attacker is discovered, the forensics about the attack, including basic information known as Indicators of Compromise (IOCs) like IP addresses, domain names, or malware hashes, are shared across the cybersecurity community. These IOCs are then used broadly to thwart future attacks.
  • Rather than rely solely on the incident response and recovery methods that have been used for many years, a more proactive, sophisticated approach is needed. It will need to be designed to successfully recognize adversary methodology (and all the manners in which an adversary attempts to obfuscate their methodology) before attacks occur and at a meaningful scale. This kind of approach, when paired with incident response tactics, could provide true security to vulnerable, critical networks.
  • A TTP-based cybersecurity tool would work in concert with existing incident response, internally-focused cybersecurity efforts, adding a layer of prevention over the top of this vital but flawed process.
  •
In today's world no business entity is impervious to cyber-attacks. Marriot, Hilton and InterContential Hotel Groups were all recently affected by such acts. The traditional cyber-attack method which the hospitality industry employs is oftentimes simply a reaction to the attack- "incident responses". Instead, the industry needs to shift its focus and allocate resources to aid prevention of future of attacks. This new focus was be surrounding tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP) - the ability to identify adversary and implement the necessary processes to hinder attacks.

This article tells us about the importance of having a good cybersecurity. There are some big hospitality companies like Marriott and Hilton which have revealed that many cyberattackes compromised personal information for many guests and that cybersecurity has to be improved.

Big Data Serves Up Opportunities to the Hospitality Sector - 0 views

  •
This is an article I found which compares POS systems use in the hospitality fields versus use in the retail sector. The writer of the article, Paul Broome, feels that the hospitality industry is not fully utilizing the sets of data that could help their business grow. He explains, "The amount of data in the world is doubling every two years..." For the retail fields, this data shows product patterns of customers, but for hospitality, this data "hold insights about customer behaviour that could transform their business and allow them to stay one step ahead of their competition." Broome provides multiple ways in which hospitality organizations can better utilize the mass sets of data available. One of these is for the organizations to use evidence and strategy rather than instinct in analyzing data. Another important strategy, according to Broome, would be to use the sets of data for future marketing purposes. "For organisations in the hospitality sector, these vast sets of data hold insights about customer behaviour that could transform their business and allow them to stay one step ahead of their competition. Times are tough - but there are huge opportunities for those that get it right."

Greater focus is recommended towards promoting creativity and innovation across the travel and tourism market which is in need of 'travel consultants' rather than just 'ticket clerks,' for example. IT development is playing a vital role across the industry as an effective means to obtain services in a quicker, easier and more reliable manner. Online booking, for one, has received highly positive response from customers and has driven tourism companies and travel agencies to invest in the latest systems and talents to achieve greater customer satisfaction. Bin Mahfouz added that it is vital to adopt advanced IT systems that can support effective and convenient online services. Such systems, he said, promote competitiveness and help meet and exceed customer expectations."Rapid changes and fast-paced digital developments have influenced the Elaf Group of Companies to undertake major investments across the Saudi travel, tourism and hospitality sectors and beyond to keep pace with international developments and resolve competitiveness-driven challenges to reach a wider segment of customers. Some of the areas we are focusing on are the installation of better IT systems, the expansion of our hotel portfolio, and advanced training to enable our personnel to meet the many needs of our customers," said Bin Mahfouz.

It is a long term project that will require a lot of information on the pros and cons that it will bring to Google and the hospitality industry. and since ITA does not currently have a search capabilities for hotels that change could be advantageous to customers. But will it affect other browsers? Definitely BING in my opinion.

Hotel room monitoring reduces energy by 40% | News | Refrigeration and Air Conditioning - 0 views

  • Hotels can save 40 per cent of energy consumption if they re-evaluate the time that rooms are occupied, according to ebm-papst
  • According to the Carbon Trust the hospitality sector is responsible for over 3.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions per year, and it is estimated that energy savings of up to 20 per cent, equivalent to more than £200 million, are possible across the sector.
  • “A retrofit upgrade from AC to EC fan technology in HVAC equipment can pay dividends for the hospitality sector.  Results include energy savings of up to 66 per cent, with additional savings being made possible by utilising the EC fans built in control functionality, enabling fans to work at a very low level while rooms are not occupied. In addition there is also a reduction in noise level
  •
This article suggests EC fans technology as one of ways to save energy in hotel rooms. The room temperature can be set and EC fans can modulate gently, instead of the occupant having to blast the room with warm then cold air. EC fans are not only less noisy, but they provide better room conditions for guests too. And I'm sure that there are more various systems available for green hotels besides EC fan. Technology is being a huge help to save energy cost. Therefore, I think that adopting a proper technology will be a crucial decision when the hotels are going green.

TECHNOLOGY, MEDIA & TELECOMMUNICATIONS ISSUES IN THE HOSPITALITY SECTOR - Al Tamimi & C... - 0 views

  • Using hotels as a basic reference, one key area where specialist TMT legal support is essential is in respect of technology.
  • Most hotels employ a combination of ‘off-the-shelf” and customized software applications in order to manage a variety of functions, such as reservations and F&B inventory. Such software applications must be appropriately licensed to the hotel by the software provider, and suitably maintained (eg. by an annual maintenance agreement with a service provider), so as to ensure that updates are applied and any errors in respect of such applications do not adversely affect operations.  Another example of the type of Technology work we handle is in advising some of the well-known international on-line travel or accommodation booking service providers about the extent to which their on-line activities may need to be licensed in the Middle East region.

  • One of the most interesting technologies I have seen recently is Eventasaurus, which gives the event manager one single tool from which to run all event related event listings across multiple platforms including LinkedIn, Lanyrd, Facebook, Plancast etc.
  • Setting up and keeping event listings and social media up to date is one of the most time consuming jobs for an event manager these days.
  • I was appalled to see how slow the adaption of event technologies has been across the traditional event management industry.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • There are some really exciting mobile apps out there, which can do exactly the same thing straight from the delegates’ mobile phones. So there is no need to hand out and then collect chunky and old fashioned hand-held devices which will cost you a fortune if you fail to return them all to the supplier.
  • Be selective though, and make sure the mobile app you choose to use works for the purpose of your event.
  • And  while technology means that the process of event management in many aspects can be speeded up considerably, event management remains a very time consuming hands-on profession.
  •
This article is strongly opinion based by an event manager's perspective on the "new" technology that is being presented for event management. Though the opinion seems negative at times, the author mentions that many of the mobile and web based technologies are helpful in simplifying the event management process. She mentions technologies like Eventasaurus. "which gives the event manager one single tool from which to run all event related event listings across multiple platforms". Nevertheless, the author still believes that the technology being used for event management can be improved. The mobile apps are better for event management because there is not a separate technology that the event manager has to use. The mobile app must work well with the purpose of the event. In all, the author states that event management is a time-consuming hands on profession, however, technology can help a few aspects of the process. In my opinion, I believe that all technology needs to be tested. When it comes to event management technology, it needs to be fast and efficient. It must be able to make the planning process easier. It must also make the collecting of information effective. The author talks about the mobile apps as being better and innovative for the event manager, which is the overall purpose of technology.
