Brigham and Women's Hospital Tests NFC RFID for Patient Bedsides - RFID Journal - 0 views

  • Harvard Medical School teaching affiliate Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) is testing a Near Field Communication (NFC) RFID system it developed that enables health-care staff members to manage the administration of medication at a patient's bedside.
  • consists of a Google Nexus 7 tablet and a software app that interprets RFID tag data regarding patients and the medications they receive. The system works with passive NFC RFID tags attached to medications, to patients' wristbands and to staff members' ID badges, thereby enabling a user to read the tags and link the patient, caretaker and medication in the app
  • Since 2005, BWH has managed its medication administration data via bar codes
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • However, Landman notes, the time spent scanning bar codes, as well as the difficulty in ensuring a strong Bluetooth connection, can often make data collection during these visits time-consuming. The bar codes themselves could be difficult to scan as well—in many cases, a bar code is printed on a crinkled wrapper that can be difficult to scan. What's more, he says, pushing the workstation-on-wheels from one room to another is cumbersome.
  • Landman's team built a prototype system, using a Nexus 7 tablet, which comes with a built-in NFC RFID reader. They loaded the tablet with the app, and then attached NFC RFID tags to some pharmaceuticals, staff badges and patient wristbands.

This program insures the safety and well keeping of the patients. I know it's not the latest in-room safe technology. But having just been in a hospital and having a dreadful experience I can honestly say that this technology would have helped.  During my hospital stay I was lost, mistaken for a man, not given an IV, and almost given the wrong prescription. Now I know it was 3 am, but if this program would have been installed I don't think I would have the same story to tell. The fact that the software tracks both the patients and the staff is what I find amazing. That was the biggest problem with my visit. No-one knew who was supposed to take care of me. This would have changed all of that.

Information Technology Impact on the Healthcare Industry - 0 views

  • As Information Technology increasingly penetrates the healthcare industry, physicians and patients are experiencing the benefits of on-demand access to medical information where, when and how it is needed.”,
  • “As expectations for improved healthcare continue to evolve, older IT systems will increasingly struggle to deliver a truly integrated flow of information having been designed traditionally around provider needs, rather than around a patient’s needs

Information Technology is not only revamping the hospitality industry, it is also making its mark in the healthcare industry. According to the article, Information technology is increasingly penetrating the healthcare industry resulting in better service and on-demand access to patient information. In my opinion, it has always seemed as if healthcare offices had outdated technology, however, these past few years I have seen a boost in their systems' quality and services. Nevertheless, I believe they can do more. In the article, modern technology is allowing the ease of accessing information at the point of care and key features that enables the office and business system to run more efficiently. Their drive is fueling their desire to run on better systems. They see the benefits of EMR (Electronic Medical Record) and use this to distribute information at the point of care. It will no longer be a waiting game for the patient or the medical staff member. It begins to set the standards of how healthcare and provision should be done in regards to efficient technology.

Employers increasingly tapping medical tourism for cost savings - 0 views

  • Recently, 60-year-old Oklahoma resident Dodie Gilmore became one of the first Americans to be sent overseas for surgery by her employer. Gilmore needed hip surgery, but found that the procedure would cost up to $40,000 if performed in the United States, which her privately purchased health plan would likely not cover.
  •
Medical tourism has recently skyrocketed due to the fact that procedures done outside of the U.S. are a fraction of the price that they would usually cost inside of the US. Companies inside of the U.S. are also beginning to send their employees to locations outside of the U.S. due to the fact that they're much more inexpensive. However, some companies are beginning to shy away from this practice due to "possible risks".

MJ Freeway, Leading Hosted Provider of Medical Marijuana Sales and Inventory Tracking S... - 0 views

  • In order to meet State regulations, a software product such as MJ Freeway’s GramTracker™ and GrowTracker™ is necessary to accurately track marijuana from seed to sale.
  • Patent-pending GrowTracker™ provides growers the ability to track every plant, nutrient, watt, drop and yield. GramTracker™’s patented inventory management tools track shake, spillage, evaporation, edibles and any theft.
  • The product specific point of sale (POS) system securely tracks all patients, patient status and transactions.
  •
When you think of where point of sales systems are typically used you think of a restaurant, hotel, stadium, retail store, etc. A medicinal marijuana store is the last place that would come to mind, at least for me personally. I think this article really shows how common and wide spread POS systems have become. MJ Freeway software tracks the sales and inventory of medical cannabis dispensaries. Their tagline is encouraging better business practices because their software is "guaranteed to always be state compliant." I love the literal naming of their software. GrowTracker and GramTracker are the inventory tracking tools that address discrepancies due to issues such as spillage or even evaporation. The incorporation of WeedTracker, WeedMaps, and Quickbooks also makes life a little easier for their clients and patients. Having a product specific point of sales which tracks patients names, status and transactions is very important in the medicinal cannabis industry and MJ Freeway delivers. The one thing I don't quite understand is how the POS allows for flexibility at POS for "buds that weigh heavy." However if that is an issue it is good that this advance system already has a solution. I found it refreshing to read about a POS in a completely different environment then a hotel yet with very similar capabilities.

Ten Fresh Event Safety Tips for a Brave New World - 0 views

  • From eliminating foreseeable risks to being prepared for the worst, there’s never been a more critical time for event marketers to arm themselves with the intelligence and resources necessary to maintain safe and secure event
  • In the event of an emergency, especially a medical crisis, documenting the incident is vital to keeping insurance premiums in check and staff informed.
  • “You want to document everything to make sure your insurance is covered, your event is covered and everyone knows what happened,” says Connor Fitzpatrick, coo at event medical services company
  • ...13 more annotations...
  • When it comes to selecting a location for your event, make sure the venue is willing to do its part to communicate key messaging to attendees. Remember: if an incident occurs, cooperation will be key.
  • Might sound like a no-brainer, but establishing exactly who is in charge of what and when can save precious minutes in an emergency. From brand ambassadors to event managers, everyone should be crystal clear about what their role entails.
  • “The key thing here is when it comes to decision-making, who is in charge?” says Shannon Jones, vp at Civic Entertainment Group. “The chain of command at an event needs to filter to the overall broader chain of command in an emergency situation as it relates to the company or brand.”
  • The uptick in terrorist attacks, including the Las Vegas shooting, which was executed from a hotel room and stands as the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, has many event marketers on edge. And while planning for these types of crises is essential, don’t assume that past tactics will be used at future events
  • The approach may vary depending on your budget, but implementing an attendee screening process is a highly effective security measure that can be executed before the event even begins. “Many events these days, particularly the corporate activation events, are free,” says Anthony Davis, president at AD Entertainment Services. “So, you have an audience that has not paid an admission or whatever format you use to access them.
  • Medical emergencies can, and do, occur at events of every variety, so having medical personnel on-site is crucial. Just as important is ensuring that the team is friendly enough for attendees to approach in the case of an emergency. Remember that uniformed first responders can be intimidating, especially in regards to drug-related incidents.
  • Hiring security staff is a great start when it comes to maintaining a safe event, but communicating your event’s layout, including areas of concern, is absolutely essential to getting the most bang for your security buck.
  • Bad news travels fast, so you have to be clear about who has the authority to develop crisis communications. (Hint: It’s not the guy handing out samples.)
  • You don’t want a brand ambassador or event staff taking it upon themselves to communicate what’s going on if there is some sort of emergency information. The cascade of information in that scenario is really critical as is deciding what the key points are and the information you want them to disseminate.”
  • When it comes to event safety and security, there is probably no more important document than your on-site emergency action plan. It’s an essential guide to navigating and preparing for foreseeable risks, informing event staffers of the appropriate safety protocol and ensuring insurance premiums don’t skyrocket
  • Every live experience is unique, so it’s important to establish priorities for taking action in a variety of emergency scenarios. If you fail to do so, you may find yourself in hot water with your employer, your insurance agency or the law.
  • In an industry that prides itself on producing unforgettable experiences, the last thing you want burning in your attendees’ minds is how poorly your staff handled an emergency. So, be informed, be attentive and be prepared—but don’t let the process get you down.
  • As Davis puts it, “For years we’ve taken it for granted that it’s a fun day, it’s a nice special event, let’s just get out and have fun. And we should still have that mentality. We shouldn’t let recent terrorist acts or potential acts deter us from producing special events. The onus is now on us to be more creative in terms of our staffing.”
  •
This article reviews ten tips on how companies can better prepare for event security. Based on recent terrorism attacks, threats, and natural disasters it is important to prepare for any type of emergency especially in events. This article offers insight on tips to navigate event security. For example, one tip is to document everything. In any type of emergency, it is important to document names of attendees and employees who were involved in the crisis. This way if insurance or any assistance is needed, companies have detailed information of who was involved or affected by the disaster. This article is very useful because some things can be forgotten however this can be used as points to discuss other security measures.

  • HRIS usually provide scheduling templates and may even make it a snap to copy over the schedule from the previous week or month and make changes to accommodate current business needs. This can save time from penciling in shifts that will stay the same. Templates can also help you to easily utilize feedback from previous scheduling issues to improve future shifts.
  • Can Increase Employee Contentment
  • Depending on the available features, employees may be able to submit feedback regarding preferences in regards to scheduling. Knowing which employees prefer the late shifts, which prefer the early morning shifts, and which employees would like to pick up available additional shifts can simultaneously make scheduling easier and make employees happier.
  • Having scheduling information in advance regularly can quickly and dramatically increase employee contentment.
  • HRIS can help you to identify times when it may be possible to assign certain employees training tasks or simply take employees aside and teach them new skills. This can help your company to increase the value of labor hours and invest in employees without breaking the bank.

This article talks about how companies use HRIS for implementing employee scheduling and how it provides key labor management tools. Using HRIS for scheduling can be of particular benefit to workplaces in industries such as retail, medical, food service, and hospitality where shifts may vary widely. Labor is the number one expense for most companies, so it is important to manage labor in the most efficient way possible. I believe the hospitality industry can benefit greatly from the implementation of the HRI Software. This article in particular focus in an important part of the human resource which is scheduling employees. One of the biggest reasons of the high employment turn over in the industry has to do with the scheduling. The hospitality employees work very long shifts and on the days that the rest of the people rest like weekends and holidays. To have a program that will take care of the scheduling is very beneficial because all the employees get a chance to have off to to work on the requested days if possible. It makes it more equal for everybody and make it look less personal so that the employees do not think that the manager has any sort preferences among them. Overall makes thing more easy to handle and optimize the time of the human resources department because they do not need to put time aside for scheduling.
  •
As we all know, the company can't be truly beneficial from using HRIS for scheduling if it operates on a 9-5 schedule. But in the hospitality industry, the company operates over a long period of time, having the different degree of complexity with scheduling. So, HRIS will help the companies to make scheduling easier. In this article, the author introduces several advantages that HRIS offers to the industry. HRIS provides hotels with labor management tools and alerts them to uncovered shifts. Moreover, it makes scheduling communication instantaneous and increase employee contentment. Most importantly, HRIS enables hotels to save time and money for providing a template, which allows hotels to strategically gear scheduling.

      Tip #2

  • Rely on a Server Expert
    • lvela051

      Tip #1
  • Standardization means providing the fewest number of product views to cover the greatest number of solutions.
  • Threat Management and Security Concerns
  • POS systems are lagging behind in security technology. The reasons are twofold: resellers do not like change and store owners balk at spending money on technology, running as they do on thin margins.
  • trend towards virtualization as a way of providing a higher level of security on back end operations.
  • Another trend that is having a major effect on security is the move to cloud-based, rather than local, infrastructure.
  • Resellers Can Provide What End Users Need
  • Look for platforms that have been field-tested with the top-selling POS software packages, so resellers have access to a variety of computer server building blocks to provide winning end user solutions.
  •
The article discusses how POS systems have changed the way establishments do business and also the way to look for the perfect server to host your POS system. This system is used mainly within hospitality industries such as restaurants, retail and even medical office, but what is important to realize is that with the use of POS systems a server is still needed to maintain and operate them. It requires a lot of research and analysis to select the correct server such as looking for servers that are not attached to a particular software and creating standardization to remove the amount of risks that a server encounters. There is a section that does mention that these systems are not prone to security concerns since POS systems are behind in security technology but virtualization is a way to provide better level of security. The main taken from the article, is that although POS systems are become more trendy it requires a lot of planning to incorporate these systems within an establishment. Besides security the main issue is finding the correct server to host this device. I agree with the fact that server should be able to "customizable and configure" to that of the consumer. The main use of the devices is to enhance the experience and create something unique. If every establishment had the same system it would be generic and non-authentic to the establishment.

Point of service machines are widely used all over. Mostly in the restaurant business, but in almost every other different type of business can use this type of system to make everyday use of counting things easier.
  • Similar to a PPO, POS plans also offer limited coverage to members who choose to go out-of-network for medical care. However, the out-of-network coverage is significantly less than that of in-network coverage, and requires a deductible and co-payment. A deductible is a dollar amount the POS requires a member to pay out-of-pocket before the member can begin to be reimbursed for his/her medical expenses. The deductible amount is normally an annual sum with the deductible applying each calendar year.  However, some Point of Service plans have exceptions and offer carry-over deductible features.

  • The basic principle behind the concept is not actually new. As NDB's chief operating officer Mohammed Irfan explained: "Using radioisotopes as a source for energy is not new
  •
The company NDB Inc has created a nano diamond battery that will not need to be charged and will live for at minimum the full life of the products it is placed into. The battery is made by taking radioactive graphite nuclear waste, turning it into a diamond, and then allowing the diamond to create energy as it degrades. The energy is created by the interaction with carbon and the decaying diamond. Skepticism from writers in the tech field has included concerns about the power density of the battery. Skeptics believe that the power density will be lower than the current lithium ion batteries being used. However, amidst all the concerns from skeptics, the company NDB Inc still appears to be optimistic and passionate about bringing this product into fruition once the current pandemic eases up.

  • That poses a problem for the hotel industry, Hron believes, because establishments not  bound by union or legislative requirements may buy inferior devices without vetting them properly, merely to satisfy new regulations. “Each hotel is buying these devices themselves—it’s not like some central authority is giving these devices to hotels,” he says. “My guess is [some are] going to buy a cheap device, and in this case, it’s pretty reasonable to think that there aren’t any analysts doing security checks on them.”
  • The lack of clear legislation also leaves workers vulnerable in jurisdictions that don’t explicitly ban employers using the devices to track the movements of hotel staff
  • technology isn’t capable of real-time tracking because it runs on WiFi and Bluetooth Low Energy, or BLE, and only transmits a signal when activated. Other devices that utilize GPS or WiFi connectivity, however, have the ability to transmit real-time location data on an ongoing basis
  • “The technology has to work every time, but the product only works if the right policies, procedures, and personnel are put in place that allow the system to function as a system
  • While the initial reason for the solution was to address sexual assault, there are other things that happen to housekeepers in hotel rooms as well,” says Ogle. “We’ve had team members that have had medical issues themselves, or found guests in rooms with medical conditions that were asking for assistance
  • Providing precise location data to first responders in the event of an emergency actually has the potential to save lives, but the technology will only be adopted if users believe it is being used appropriately
  •
The major hotel chains are influencing legislation and also now requiring employee safety devices (ESDs) to make the workplace safer for employees (i.e. room service attendants or housekeepers) who find themselves alone in guest rooms with ill-intentioned guests. ESDs can also be appropriate for large resorts with beach personnel, activities personnel, or other positions that find themselves in enclosed, or remote areas with less security. Not every hotel has a security department that can constantly monitor cameras and ESDs. Will these devices present more strain on hotel wireless networks? That depends. Hoteliers need to consider whether these devices will be provided by or monitored through their keylock vendor, through their guest room entertainment vendor, or through a wireless provider. Could there be a benefit to an ESD interface with the PMS? I'm not finding an obvious answer. Hotels, varying in room count, are providing ESDs that range from whistles to wireless to BLE or RFID enabled. Hotel owners and management companies have the responsibility to research the most appropriate solution for their hotel without undermining the safety and privacy of their employees and their hotel networks.

Time is key when working in healthcare, and the speed of access to data could assist in saving someones life.
  • many companies will strive to increase their ability to store, process, analyze, and secure essential healthcare data. As a result, instead of using various cloud providers for multiple applications or disaster recovery, such cohesive approaches will become more common.
  • The Company has been awarded 11 contracts thus far in Q2, six of which are additional expansions with existing customers.

As companies expand there cloud-based services, they will become much more attractive to current clients with wanting to take their business to the next level.
  • The current healthcare cloud computing market is valued at nearly $18 billion and is expected to increase by almost 18.7% between 2022 and 2025.
  • there will be a greater need for security, privacy, and compliance
  • More than 81% of the most successful IT companies have begun to work on AI technologies, allowing them to revolutionize business processes and increase efficiency and productivity while supporting human capabilities and automating repetitive tasks.
  • As a result, the number of businesses using cloud-based apps is expected to increase by 19.6%
  • The Company is perfectly positioned to benefit from the Biden Administration's $1.9 trillion Infrastructure Bill, including $350 billion allocated for State and Local Governments to invest in upgrades and modernizations.

Cloud-based software would be at the top of the list for these upgrades and modernizations which would increase revenue substantially for multiple cloud services. The same exact software needed for a major hospital may not be need for urgent care or small primary care office, but the software is needed none the less.

Software as a Service is becoming an essential part of the healthcare community. The time saved researching information about a patient, searching for medications or treatments could be valuable time needed for saving a life. It is project that "the number of businesses using cloud-based apps is expected to increase by 19.6%." With the increase in the use of cloud-based applications, there is a stronger need for the attention given to data security. Especially when it comes to patient information. Multiple cloud based options may initially be utilized before phasing into singular sources over time. This will alleviate some of the pressure needing to have the increased security for two platform rather than one.
