Technology Integration Lets Hotels Be Green and Efficient | Products | Hospitality Maga... - 0 views

  • The common belief is that optimal energy savings only needs a property-management system interface. While exchanging critical guest data through a PMS is an important means for effective energy management, hotels have discovered that to attain maximum efficiency and visibility, interfacing INNcontrol™ 3 software with systems such as SynergyMMS provide far more operational efficiencies.
  •
Deploying a monitoring and control system as part of this project offered many advantages, including: Showing the public the impact of investing in a renewable energy project Providing an effective means of assessing the long-term performance, determining maintenance needs, and maximizing the ROI of the project Enhancing the project's educational value for students. Overall, the project has reaped important benefits for education, business, and industry: The green home illustrates the use of renewable energy and supports its benefits with solid performance data. The project demonstrates how educational institutions can extend their reach throughout the country and around the world, conducting long-term research, bringing short-term real-time data into the classroom, and educating and training the future technology workforce. The systems exemplify the influence of sophisticated, electronic tools such as Web-based portal software.

Real-world Training to Hospitality Students - 0 views

  •
M3 Accounting Services, the national leader in hotel accounting software, is providing hands-on training to several universities across the United States, thanks in part to a partnership with the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. This software is designed to simulate a 100-room hotel and offer differet scenarios to provide training exercises for hospitality students. I think this is a great idea since application of exercises is what really drives the information home.

What are 'Green' IT Initiatives? | RecycleNation - 1 views

  • So-called Green Information Technology (IT) initiatives have been sprouting up at corporations, organizations and governing entities in a variety of sectors
  •
Green practice not only save companies money in the long run, but contribute to creating a healthier planet. Various industries are taking part in the implementation of green strategies to do so. As this article points out, universities are using green IT. The University of Pittsburgh is taking part in several of these. First by using Pitt Printing, which "effort reduces the likelihood of multiple print jobs, according to the university, and also stems the tide of students printing a document and not picking it up. By the university's estimation, this change in technique has saved upward of 100,000 sheets of paper that would have wound up discarded, making it 20 times less wasteful than full-service printing"." In addition the school has committed to using "read green" by reducing paper waste and committing to using electronic copies and using web conferences versus in person interviews for candidates and meetings. Small steps can make a big difference and IT is assisting in the green implementation.
  •
I love how you brought up Universities. Its amazing how everything now is pretty much done online. Even professors like everything turned in via email or via blackboard. This saves so much on paper and ink for printers. I believe that one day there will barely or any use for printers and so forth due to the evolution of sustainability.

Event Planning: Requirements to Be an Event Planner - 0 views

  • event planners need a certain set of skills, and one way they may be developed is by completing a bachelor's degree program in hospitality, communications or public relations.
  • event planners must have phenomenal communication skills.
  • Event planners must also have excellent organizational skills.
  •
An Event planner has an interesting, fun and time consuming Job. The main tasks of event planners are to coordinate and manage conferences, meetings and parties. Some planners work exclusively organizing a specific type of event, such as those who specialize in wedding planning. Others may work with large corporate clients or smaller private groups. Many planners run their own businesses, while others may work for event planning agencies. Due to the nature of the work, many planners work long and irregular hours. As far as for Education requirements, The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that there are no universal educational requirements needed to start a career as an event planner. Nevertheless, they need a certain set of skills, and one way they may be developed is by completing a bachelor's degree program in hospitality, communications or public relations. Common core classes in these programs include risk management, event coordination and professional ethics. Some programs allow students to specialize their education through courses specifically intended for wedding planning while other programs may feature courses for students interested in careers organizing sports and entertainment events. Furthermore, it is very important that event planners have phenomenal communication and organizational skills.
  •
This article introduces the requirements to be an event planner. For the education requirement, although the BLS reported that an event planner does not need the universal education, event planner needs some skills from the bachelor's degree program. As a professional event planner, they should get many skills from the special program in the hospitality university. On the other hand, event planner should at good at communication. As they always communicate with clients that need good ability of oral and writing. And the event planner should have excellent organization skills to handle different clients simultaneously. In addition, more experiences the event planner have that will attract more clients or events.

Personal panic alarms part of contract for hotel staff in NYC - 0 views

  •
Changes are coming for New York City hotel workers. A proposal between the Hotel Association of New York and the New York Hotel Trades Council would equip hotel staffers with personal panic alarms. Employees like house keepers are calling for the extra safety measures for fear of being assaulted in a guest room. Concern is also circulating outside New York in places like Sacramento, California. The personal security devices were tested on students at California State University at San Marcos last year. I believe hotels will begin to implement more measures like this in large cities like New York. Similar to airports and large department stores, safety is a major concern. I believe the personal panic button is a great idea for any hospitality space that accommodates a large number of people.

I imagine this would help increase employee satisfaction etc. There is a real need for this and I could see major benefits from such technologies.
  •
I think this is really important to increase not only customers comfort but the people who work inside the system and provide this comfort. Feeling that you are important and everything is under conrol can make the life of hotel's staff.
  •
This article is about a personal panic button that hotel workers in New York City could soon be wearing or have on them during work, which in case of an emergency can call for help with just a push of the button. This new technology is coming about after many housekeepers were asking for better security, since many are worried about assaults from cleaning rooms by themselves, which the article says "is one of the dirty secrets of workplace violence in the hospitality industry." . Other Hotel workers from cities around the United States are also interested in this new device. The device is also being tested at a University for its students.
  •
I think this new proposal may draw people's attention to employees' safety issues within the hospitality industry. It is also important for hotels and restaurants to make sure that their employees work in an environment that is danger free and threats free. The panic button can provide the instant location of the staff and once if something goes wrong, the time for rescue will be shorten. It is really a beneficial proposal for the entire hospitality industry.
  •
Pending approval, personal panic alarms would be carried by staff members in all New York City hotels. These panic buttons would be carried by the staff member during their shift so that they are easily and quickly accessible should something happen. Fox News in Sacramento, CA reported that house keepers voiced their desire for more saftey measures to be put in place. Assaults on house keepers may be more common than people think. House keepers tend more often to be women and they tend to work alone or with only one other person. Hotels host many events in which guests may be drinking which in turn creates the potential for violent or inappropriate actions. Not only is the safety of guests important to the hospitality industry but safety of employees is paramount as well. Having personal panic buttons would give house keepers and workers alike more peace of mind should they encounter any uncomfortable or unsafe situation.

Point of Sale Technology: New Developments - 0 views

  •
This article provides a brief overview of the emerging trends for hotel management information systems. The trends focus on easy mobile access, unattended point of sale, radio frequency identification and near field communications. An increasing number of hotel are using the the cloud for on the go mobile connectivity to their POS systems and revenue management software SaaS. You can manage your hotel from anywhere and be up to date instantly. This trend and the next eliminates the need for desk or office time. Lilipad has created an I-product that allows guests to perform their own transactions at I-Pad kiosk which eliminates time at the front desk. The other large emerging trend is tracking devices that can be implanted in phones or even loyalty cards that link to bank and credit card accounts replacing the traditional wallet. While other articles say there is no rush to cellphones replacing wallets just yet, hotels like Aloft are using RFID's in there loyalty cards eliminating the issue of room keys. Notice in all these trends that the face to face contact with guests that we hospitality students enjoy and train for is decreasing with every new technology.

Dude Ranches and Eco-Friendly Tourism - 0 views

  •
If you are looking to expand your horizons on eco-tourism, visiting a Dude Ranch may be a good idea for vacation. According to this article, Dude Ranches are the leader in eco-friendly tourism. Visiting the ranch is a great way to get close to the environment and learn about sustainability first hand. The article suggest that while visiting on vacation the most obvious eco-friendly item will be the food. Dude Ranch communities live off the land around them. They are very aware not to put chemicals into their land; it may "contaminate the water table" as well as their livestock. Separation of waste and recycling is part of the sustainability in a Dude Ranch. They want to reuse their natural resources, food waste is used as fertilizer. If visiting on vacation, you will see sustainability at its finest. Ranches supply the local community as well. Many Ranches try to be "as self-sufficient as possible", only using what they need keep the ranch running. This allows them to supply the community as well as local retailers with free-ranged beef as well as free-ranged eggs. Some ranches even make and sell their own specialty items, bread or wine. A few Dude Ranches have allowed Universities to use their land to expose students to re-life sustainability issues. The ranch shows them what sustainability looks like in practice and how it benefits the environment around them. This allows them to educate students visiting the ranch, and it allows for the eco-tourist to stay to learn more about sustainability and the environment.

Glacier House hotels, whom is based out of Arizona converted completely from the original Aptech accounting software to the new cloud PVNG system. The reviews so far are highly rated and it seems to have a bright future again. I thought this article was perfect because it blends multiple aspects that we have discussed over the past couple of weeks!

This article is about the small company that just installed Aptech's new web-based enterprise accounting. It is evident this article received some attention by the amount of students who highlighted notable parts of the article. This new system is deployed in the cloud and it is easier to train and faster to navigate. This is very convenient for accountants in the hospitality industry because it can potentially have a dramatic change on the department's efficiency. The system also provides a complete suite of financial management and analysis for the hotel industry. Lastly, it is also trustworthy because the Aptech group has more than 45 years of hotel accounting knowledge.

Hospitality and tourism education in an emerging digital economy - 1 views

  • PMS and integration of multiple properties across the globe
  • It is well known that industries are moving with the flow of advanced technology and this is causing disruption in their daily business operations and processes.
  • At present, there is no alternative to digital disruption and businesses large and small must adapt to the changes that are occurring
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • Technology has been a key driver for hospitality businesses for several decades and it has drastically transformed how the industry operates
  • Every industry has specific software applications that are unique and integral to the management of their daily operations. In the hotel industry, property management systems (PMS) or hotel operating systems are platforms that “enabled a hotel or group of hotels to manage front-office capabilities, such as booking reservations, guest check-in/check-out, room assignment, managing room rates, and billing” ( Oracle, 2019).
  • These systems have also evolved to incorporate functionality that supports food and beverage operations, housekeeping and maintenance management, as well as revenue management.
  • Applications such as Cloudbeds, Preno, Hostaway and Lodgify have become a staple in most hotels today, allowing for the efficient management of hotel fun ctio ns.
  • Similarly, in the restaurant industry, practitioners often rely on restaurant management systems (RMS), POS software designed for the food service industry to make bookings, capture transactions, record orders and manage inventory (FinancesOnline, 2019).
  • At the broader tourism management level, GDS, also known as automated reservation systems or CRS, are computerised networks that centralise services and provide travel related transactions for products such as airline tickets, hotel rooms and car rentals ( Kelly, 2018)
  • GDS serve as a conduit between travel bookers and suppliers and help communicate product offerings, pricing and availability to travel agents and online booking engines.
  • Their functionality and applications are often limited to a specific industry (e.g. hotel, restaurant and airline)
  • Internally, cloud computing allows managers to access data collected from proprietary applications (e.g. RMS, PMS) which can be shared across departments.
  • This data can be accessed from anywhere around the world on demand
  •
This paper discusses the role of PMS, POS, and GDS in the hospitality and tourism industry. It identifies key digital literacy and employability skills that students and educators need to develop to better understand and negotiate the changing, digitally focused landscape of the hospitality and tourism sector.

Dubai Hotels Struggle to Fill Jobs - 0 views

  •
This article brings to light the fact that hotels in Dubai are struggling to find the right staff to work for their hotels. As the industry grows, including rooms, airport arrivals, occupancy, revenue, etc., hotels are having a difficult time finding employees to meet the demand of the increasing hotel industry in Dubai, especially since the industry is known for low pay and long hours. Experts are now advising that more programs be made available for students in the hospitality industry in order to attract the right employees who are willing to work the long hours for low pay and still want to do the job because they love the field work. This rings true with any career because it's important to have employees who are dedicated and love what they do because they're attitude towards the industry and that particular job will ultimately reflect on their work and on the company's image.

In essence this "data mining" related article explains how the FTC recently outlined new policies in an effort to close loopholes which allow websites to gather and turnover information gathered to third parties for advertising purposes.   Changes such as videos, photos, locations, etc, which cannot be pulled without parental approval are making impacts on what can be pulled and shared. Another change includes closing a loophole that gives apps/websites directed at children the ability to collect information through plug-ins, without parents permission. In conclusion, these rules are based on the Children s Online Privacy Act of 1998, which gave the FTC the authority to implement/periodically update rules pertaining to "how the law is enforced". These rules will go into effect on July 1, 2013.

HFTP Begins Development of a Global Hospitality Accounting System Users Guide - Busines... - 1 views

  • our Global Board is investing heavily to create a benchmark that stakeholders can use to compile accounts, compare regional differences and define the value of a hospitality operation
  • will provide the industry with a comprehensive glossary of inventory terminology, charts of accounts and will benchmark common allocation for specific regions of the world
  •
Hospitality Finance and Technology Professionals (HFTP) is creating an accounting system users guide to create a global resource for the hospitality finance industry. This is going to be a great resource for companies to use as a benchmark when compiling accounts, comparing differences with competitors and defining the value of their operation. Although it will not be used as mandatory protocol that all companies must abide by, it is a great tool to use as guidance. It will consist of a glossary, accounting charts and provide examples.
  •
This article explains how the hospitality industry is taking their own twist on accounting. Similar to GAAP, the hospitality industry will use the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals' (HFTP) global hospitality accounting system users guide. HFTP is a global professional association dedicated to financial and personal in the industry. It is implementing a benchmark that stakeholders can use to gather accounts, compare regional differences, and set the value of operations. It will have a glossary of inventory terminology, charts, and benchmark specific regions of the world. HFTP plans to create this in 3 steps. The first step is to gather bachelor students at Ecole Hoteliere De Laudanne to gather data from hotel operations and assemble the terms. The second step is to distribute the data to regional teams that will create sample charts of accounts for the local areas. The third step is to discuss similarities and differences in allocations. I think this great for the hotel industry because will have a common accounting principle to reference to. It will allow hotels to better be indexed and compared to one another.

That means no winks or sad faces and no TTYL (talk to you later). The only abbreviations that might be acceptable are common hospitality-related acronyms, such as ARDA or NRA.

This article is basically the rules and regulations of how to write an email. Netiquette is important because if you make yourself seem professional, the people whom you send these emails to will reply and treat you with respect. Especially if its a business email. The article teaches you about how to write a subject line and the difference between cc and bc. It also teaches you not to use lol and thesmiley face emoticon unless the email is personal. This article also teaches you on how to relax on the punctuations. Too many exclamation marks might seem like your going crazy screaming at someone. It also teaches you about how to properly send signatures. I think everyone should read this article to perfect their emails. Especially students because now and days , there is no need to go to your teachers office. You just shoot your teacher an email and it will make your life easier.

This article is about the basic rules of netiquette. It breaks down from everything from the subject to the signature. It shows you differences of writing a business email and a personal email.

Spreading the netiquette gospel at work - CNN - 0 views

  • Spreading the netiquette gospel at work
  • Your co-workers, of course, are another story. And their lack of netiquette skills isn't just an annoying but innocuous reflection of their poor upbringing; it can actually hurt the entire company.
  • But consider that whoever has no problem speaking to you that way likely sends inappropriate missives to the outside world: clients, partners, prospective customers and so on. Anyone with a corporate e-mail address is a company ambassador with every note he or she sends.

  • You know how when you're pitching an idea in a meeting and a higher-up's BlackBerry buzzes on the table and he leans in to read it and you're mortified and start stuttering and everyone becomes engrossed in watching him leisurely reach for the silence button?
  • About two-thirds of employees say PDAs are a distraction in meetings, according to a Lexis-Nexis survey. What's more, research from Washington University in St. Louis found that a ring tone blaring midclass hampered students' recall of the material covered by about 25 percent.

Netiquette is very important in today's industry as it can only improve and enhance our way of communicating and networking. Also, everything is pretty much done by conference calls, audio visuals and over the internet by exchanging emails and web links. I personally believe that Netiquette should only be improve on because that is where the world of today is looking forward to and addressing too.

Report: Hotel industry continues to show signs of recovery - 0 views

  •
There's more good news for the hotel industry, according to a new analysis by advisory firm PwC. Based on statistics provided by Smith Travel Research and other research firms, PwC estimates that revenue per available room this year will increase by 6.5% and 5.6% next year.
  •
The hospitality and tourism industry will unlikely ever see a full decline; people are always going to travel and vacation, they are just likely to go about it differently. So whats the solution? Hotel owners need to shift their focus from rates to value. For example, although a discounted rate might attract consumers, value is what drives the consumer to purchase and remain loyal. The industry can no longer rely on the fact that people want luxury in their lives and are going to travel because times have changed- today's consumer is much more conscientious about frivolous expenses. Now might be a better time than ever for students to earn hospitality degree and enter the field. There are more opportunites out there today than ever before.

The article talked about the easy access to information found on the internet and how accessible it is to users. Most information posted on the net is unreliable and offers misinformation, because people can post articles to the net. Individuals need to be smart users, when validating information they find on the internet. Validating information takes good fundamental skills and critical thinking. So when validating information one should make sure the source is reliable.

  •
The main focus of my article is about the financial connection between India and the U.S. The article discusses a few key issues about India and their tech support in relation to the U.S. It tells us that "India's burgeoning tech sector is responsible for creating more than 400,000 American jobs, according to a report released Monday that prompted calls from leaders in both nations to reform business practices so the industry remains a bright spot in an often unreliable global economy". The article goes on to list some more interesting statistics. For example, "The new study from the National Association of Software and Service Companies, a trade group representing Indian technology firms, said business deals between firms in the two countries have generated $22.5 billion in tax revenue for the U.S. since 2011". I feel that these two statistics are important because in too many cases, Americans feel that "foreigners" are coming to the U.S. and "stealing" all of our jobs. That is clearly not the case with every situation, as the article points out. The article further explains that India is seeking to ease the process of coming into the U.S. to work. They feel that if they are providing their highly skilled techs to come work here and/or gain their American education here than the process of getting the visa should be much more lax than it is for other countries. I don't know if I agree with that one, but I understand their point.
