Will Amazon's New Palm Recognition Become the Next Popular Biometric Technology? | By L... - 0 views

  • Amazon recently introduced a new biometric payment device, Amazon One, in two of its Go stores in Seattle. Shoppers can now enter and pay at cashier-free Amazon Go stores by scanning their palms.
  • Amazon One enables consumers to avoid touching the surfaces that others may have touched earlier.
  • Places with high foot traffic, such as stadiums, restaurants, retail stores, office buildings, and any gated or secured facilities, could benefit from the device.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Some believe that palm recognition is a less-risky biometric technology because our palm is not as easily observable as our face or ear print.
  • Technology-wise, palm recognition does not need to solve some of the unique challenges that facial or fingerprint recognition encounter. For instance, not all devices using facial recognition can tell the differences between identical twins.
  • Amazon One will store consumers' palm data in the cloud, and they can choose to remove the data later.
  •
Amazon has introduced a new biometric payment device that works by having shoppers scan their palms. This is similar to the Amazon Go app where shoppers can set up a credit card and scan the app on the way into an Amazon store. Palm scanning works well in a the current climate where people do not want to touch things others have also touched. This technology could be implemented and work well in places with high foot traffic such as stadiums. Palm scanning also has some security advantages. Palms are not as easy to observe and read as faces and not as commonly used as fingerprints. The data will be stored in the cloud and consumers have the option of removing it later, which helps some feel safer with regards to security concerns.

Managing Guest Relations and Upholding Corporate Digital Responsibility In The Hospital... - 0 views

With the increasing popularity of digital technology and related data, people will naturally have ethical questions about the use of these technologies, especially when private information of ordinary citizens is involved. In order to provide a personalized experience, hotel organizations will have to collect and store a large amount of personal visitor information, which is a factor subject to strict supervision. In order to balance the conflicting demands of compliance and individualization, the best way for hotel organizations is to maintain clarity and transparency in their data collection. In view of the rise of modern regulations and privacy issues, hotel organizations must consider new technologies, threats and regulations to formulate their CDRs. Establishing a robust system that can support the organization's CDR will not only maintain the reputation of the hotel organization, but also help establish a healthy digital corporate culture throughout the industry.

Top 10 Event Management Trends for 2019 - Eventina - 0 views

  • Smartphones have more capabilities and connections to our lives, event tech is becoming more reasonably priced and targeted to individual needs, and tech that used virtual and augmented reality was on many people’s gift-giving lists this year.
  • Instead of long-winded speeches, short talks are combined with activities that let the audience learn first-hand how to apply what they learned. Hands-on experiences have the advantage of adding extreme value to learning, while also aiding in the stress reduction of the attendees. To facilitate an even deeper level of immersion, make sure your sessions have definite time frames and tangible incentives.
  • Traverse the communication gap: Use remote translation services. Finding local translators isn’t always easy. With this type of technology, translators could be available remotely or through an app giving your attendees a good communication experience regardless of time and where they are at your event. Save money using remote translation services. Apps don’t have to be paid hourly, for travel, or incidentals. Use subject matter experts regardless of their knowledge of the language that most of your attendees speak. This frees up the selection process to find the person who knows the most without sacrificing attendee experience or understanding.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Harness the power of chat for a better response: Design a system to answer questions with chat. It’s faster for attendees and won’t tie up your staff with the same old “where is the restroom” type question. Use chatbots for exit surveys. They are much more adept at matching questions with answers and using “if, then” pathways for more meaningful information gathering. Plus they’re fun for your audience. Employ chatbots to assist attendees on next steps. Voice assistants have become wildly popular because they’re easy and enjoyable to use and they act as our own personal attendant. They can remind us of engagements as well as tasks. Use chatbots to tell attendees if their silent auction bid was trumped or what their next session is and where it’s located.
  • Use live 360-degree video (what many refer to as VR) to connect remote audiences. Give them the opportunity to attend an event together in order to bolster buying online-only tickets.
  • Host a health fair as part of a larger medical society conference. This leads to raised awareness, gives back to the destination city, builds brand awareness, knowledge and support and, ultimately, affects those members of the public that participate.
  •
Great article looking at the trends in events, many of which I have witnessed this past year. What I would like for the class to read is the description of awareness based events. As my husband's an associate dean of a hospitality school, he worked with his event and conference manager and his dietetic program chair to create an interactive health fair looking at diabetes education and attracted 300 participants. I observed the power of community based programming in the event space and how this type of programming may be the future.

GDS Hotel Bookings Rise in 2017 | TravelPulse - 0 views

  • GDS Hotel Bookings Rise in 2017 | TravelPulse
    • rnobl005

This article is rather short but I thought it complemented the discussion post for this week. Travel Click surveyed 900 travel agents worldwide and discovered that hotel bookings will surpass 68 million reservations by the end of 2017 thanks to Global Distribution Systems. In 2016 the estimated number of bookings was 66 million, meaning GDS is gaining in popularity as a means of securing travel arrangements even today. Like the Whitepaper suggests, Sabre, Amadeus, and Travelport are the 3 major companies supporting this service. I thought it was interesting that the article brought up the issue of "rate parity" as a means to distinguish one hotel from another. Travel agents are less likely to book a hotel if the hotel is offering different rates across platforms, especially if the GDS rate is higher. Again, bringing this article back to the discussion questions, this is evidence that there are benefits to using a travel agent when planning a trip. They have a comprehensive knowledge of the market at their disposable compared to the average person searching for the best deal on their own. Towards the end of the article the author brings up that travel agents are not using Airbnb because the platform isn't integrated into the GDS - which was not surprising.
  • travel agents are using the GDS to make a record number of hotel reservations.
  • 68 million reservations
    • rnobl005

I think this figure them mention is slightly misleading though. In context this sounds like the total number of reservations made using GDS systems, not necessarily the number of reservations made by travel agents.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • increase of more than 2 million reservations from the number of bookings generated in 2016.
    • rnobl005

Regardless of who is responsible for the amount of bookings, I think an increase of 2 million bookings in one year is evidence that GDS is still an extremely profitable revenue stream for the hospitality industry.
  • One of the most important things that travel agents want when it comes to hotel bookings on the GDS is rate parity. Hotels that don’t offer the same prices on the GDS that they do elsewhere are not looked upon favorably.
  • Hotels that offer great amenities are also among the ones that travel agents book the most.
    • rnobl005

The most appealing amenities mentioned in the article are swimming pools, free parking, airport shuttles or transfers, hotel gyms and early check-in/late check-out. Hoteliers should take this information into account and find ways to highlight these features at their properties.
  • global travel agents rely on the GDS as an essential operating system for conducting hotel research and booking reservations
  • Travel agents continue to rely heavily on the GDS for booking and shy away from non-traditional accommodation options such as Airbnb because they are not available on the GDS.
  •
The article talks about the use of GDS and its importance in the current Hospitality World. It shows a study which refers GDS as the most important booking tool for travel agents, citing record numbers in booking in 2017
  •
Based on the reading GDS assist and has raise the profit margin for hotel across the board. Hotels are more profitable due to this feature .

Thirdly, Thomas talks about virtual events. Virtual events save the planner and the attendee valuable time, money, and resources. Thomas next talks about social media and viral marketing. Using sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to share event details is a great way to communicate to a very large group of people. The fifth and last technology that Thomas speaks of is Ipads and tablets. Through event management applications, planners have all of the information they could possibly need right at their fingertips. Ipads and tablets also make it possible to communicate in real time if needed.

I think this is a great article. I am a Marketing Manager but do events at my restaurant as well and even for me I need my smart phone at all times to look up stuff in emails or even have a remote log-in to my computer to check a contract if needed. Event planners really do need all of these technologies at all times and people may view it as rude to be on your phone at all times but in reality they are just doing their jobs to make your life easier and less complex.

"5 technologies event planners can't live without" was a unique read. The article begins with the number one technology the author designates as not being able to live without which are smartphones. Event planners are constantly in need to update their events, use the latest applications, set alarms for all events , look up phones number instantly by vendor and so on. What is then questioned is the systems in place before smartphones were introduced. Number two on the list is SaaS cloudapps better known as software as a service applications that are vastly on the rise. SaaS cloudapps enable meeting planners to access details and other aspects of events from any web device such as a smart phone or ipad. This is also valid with the ability to link event management systems to customer relationship management systems (CRM).Number three is Virtual events. The article presents many positives in hosting "webinars or live events" that include saving time, money and available resources. The meeting planner can fill "seats" easier and measure improvement for future events. Number four is social media and viral marketing. This is a major deal for event planners because not only they have the ability to market their events but attendees market for them: before, during and after. The article presents statistics about twitter, facebook and linkedin which support why social media and viral marketing are keys to success for event planners. Last but not least, listed as number five are Ipads and tablets. These devices simply allow event planners to have a bundle of information at their fingertips. In summary, event planners are constantly on the go and will always strive for perfection even during crunch time. Technology enhancements have allowed event planners to become more efficient and better resources for their clients.

With more and more people adopting smartphones, ipads and tablets, event planners should look into purchasing a mobile event app for their attendees to use at their event. This not only reduces paper waste, it also reduces the high costs involved in printing event guides and brochures for the event. It is essentially a virtual event guide that's available in the palm of the attendee's hands.

This article contains information about the expected event trends this year that will possibly increase ROI. The list of expected trends all surrounded the technological advancements that are enhancing event planning. The advancements include the increased use of smartphones to conduct business. This technological increase will also reduce company costs. It is also expected to improve company value. I agree with technology improving company value. Technology is advancing majorly throughout the world. It is also making it easier for companies and consumers to interact. Smartphones, alone, are very popular in today's economy and are a great example of technological advancement. Being that people already use their smartphones to check emails, save event dates and contact other people (whether over the phone or by video), conducting business will be somewhat simple to adapt to. Increasing company technology to reduce costs is a good move. However, the companies should keep in mind that losing one cost will only open the door for another one. When dealing with technology, there are always risks (usually malfunction risks). So, companies should keep in mind that there is a possibility that expenses will incur for the technological maintenance that will be needed to keep the technology operating.
