Title: Helping Your Child Through a Divorce Author: Michelle New, PhD Date Published: Updated 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This site if very helpful because it gives several examples of how one can tell ones child that they are going through a divorce. It also goes through the different ages in children and how they might react to the divorce. Overall, this article is great for helping one cope with a divorce as well as ways to help your child cope with a divorce without making much damage. How this influenced my thinking: My parent are still together, so I was never exposed to any divorce issues, but I do remember having friends whose parents were divorced so I knew it was a hard process especially for my friends. Because I don't talk to my high school friends anymore, I honestly wasn't sure what the negative outcomes were of a divorce, but after reading this site all of the pain and sorrow from my friends came back. Everything that was mentioned especially about teens reactions were the way that my friends reacted during their parent's divorce. Credibility: This site seems to be credible.

Title:Helping your child through a divorce Author:Michelle New Date published: 2011 Why relevant and summary:This article is relevant because it discusses how parents can help their children cope with a divorce. It discusses how to break the news to them, giving them consistency, how to parent as single parents, and not bringing arguements to them. How this influenced my thinking:I believe that it is very important to never argue in front of children. When this happens, children may feel like they need to choose sides. If at all possible, parents should try and be civil with one another and hopefully end the marriage on good terms. Credibility of source:Credible

7 - Moral Reasoning and how it is used in our modern world - 2 views

  •
Title: The Tribal Mind: Moral Reasoning and Public Discourse Author: Arnold Kling Date Published: April 26, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: As soon as I saw this article I thought it was great. In a very interesting way it explain what moral reasoning is and how it is developed, influenced upon and used in today's complicated world. It taps on issues that we are faced with daily, especially coming after a presidential election where the "morals" of each side where being discussed and with a fierce public discourse. This essay also discusses some great books written about the topic and the author does a great job at explaining how our own personal moral values and beliefs are used to justify our behavior and manipulate others; and also how these moral decisions are very often based on instinct and rapid judgment rather than rational thought. The author maintains the position that even though we have come along as a society we still behave sometimes in tribal manner, and that goes not only for how we conduct business or personal relationships but also how this great country of ours is run. How This Influenced My Thinking: As a young person, and as a mother of two young boys, I took in all the information that I got from this article; I think I am going to read it again and also read the books that were used to support some of the thinking behind it. I believe that when someone truly understand where someone else is coming from it will be easier to comprehend their thinking and the commitment that they have to their moral compass. Also interesting to find out was how often rushed moral judgment occurs in our society, and how that directly impact all of us. It was a great article with a great deal of food for thought. Credibility of Source: It was published on "The American" an online magazine of the American Enterprise Institute and its author is a member of the Financial Markets Working Group at the Mercatus Center of George Mason University

7 - Theory of Mind, Personal Account, Includes Helpful image - 5 views

  •
Title: Empathy, Mindblindness, and Theory of Mind Author: Lynne Soraya Date Published: May 19, 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: An excellent overview of Theory of mind. The article also explains how researchers test for theory of mind. It links theory of mind to the concept of Empathy, and explores whether people with Asperger's lack empathy or simply the ability to read social cues. Several excellent links, quotes, and a diagram explaining how the topic is researched. How This Influenced My Thinking: I know of several families that have children diagnosed with Asperger's. The article raises the possibility that those children with Asperger's could benefit from learning how to read social cues, and that their ability to empathize could be fine. Better interpretation of social cues would help them with their theory of mind regarding how others feel. Credibility of Source: Comes from a published magazine, Psychology Today. Likely to be fairly credible.

  •
Title: Identity formation Author: Rice and Dolgen Date published: 2002 Why relevant and summary: This article was a good summary of identity formation and a good in-depth look at James Marcia's four identity status' that make up his theory of identity formation. How this influenced my thinking: I have always been intrigued about what makes people who they are and why some have such a strong personality or sense of who they are while others seem lost as to who they are. This article made me think that mabe the amount of dramatic experiences one faces creates their personality or who they want to be. Credibility of source: I think this came from a book, seems credible most of the info was very similar to wikipedia.

10- Importance of sound with baby in the womb - 0 views

  •
Title: Importance of prenatal sound and music Author: Giselle E Whitwell Date Published: It doesn't say Why Relevant and Summary: This was an amazing article! It was talking about the sound decibel of conversations or music outside of the womb. She goes to talking about how a baby might respond when the mother is in a certain environment and sometimes, what the effects may be after birth. How This Influenced My Thinking: While some of this is common knowledge, I never really knew or understood the importance of sound and how detrimental it can be in later stages of childhood. I see it now in my own children. I played a lot of music when I was pregnant and my kids love listening to it and dancing to it. Sometimes, you just don't think about these things. Credibility of Source: It's posted on an Association of Prenatal and Health. I don't think they would give false information.

Researching cause and effect "experimental research method" - 0 views

  •
Title: Researching cause and effect Author: Lance Jones Date published: Jan 15th, 2012 Why is this relevant: This power point is relevant because it gives you many recources that would help someone understand what cause and effect is. For example, it provides you with background information on it, states the 3 main characteristics of it, on top of providing you with many examples that really help your understanding of the topic. The slide is very user-friendly and easy to understand. It even provides synonyms for words in case you don't understand. How this influenced my thinking: It has influenced my thinking in a couple ways. One, i never knew there were so many aspects to cause and effect. There are two variables that must be related, two sides to the correlation, and the cause must come before the effect and not vise versa. Two, it really helped me understand why a person would use the cause and effect method, and also why it might not be the best method for some types of studies. Credibility of source: Although id like to think this comes from a very credible source, there is not really anything on the site that indicates it is....

LaVoie Date Published: 2008 Why Relevant: This is a research article from the journal of research in personality which is a great source to begin with in regards to personality theory. It shines a light on the fact that identity it always changing no matter what age and stage in life a person is. Title: Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development Author: Kendra Cherry Date Published:n.d. Why Relevant and Summary:This article gave information on Kohlberg's theory of moral development. All three levels were mentioned and all six stages were discussed. Preconventional reasoning consists of stages one and two. Stage one is based on obedience and punishment.Children should obey the rules in order to avoid consequences of their actions. Stage two is based on individualism and exchange. The example given is of children arguing on which course of action is best, when it really only matters which one is best for you. Conventional reasoning consists of stages three and four and is based on conforming to someone else's needs of a role. Stage three is when a person lives up to social expectations of what people have of them. Conforming to what they see you as. Stage four is maintaining social order, society is viewed as one when making judgements such as maintaining the law and order. Postconventional consists of stages five and six and is based on independent judgements. Stage five is social and individual rights and stage six is our universal principles. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article had some great examples that made Kohlberg's theory a bit more clear for me to understand each stage and level. Credibility: I find this source to be credible.

Author: Staff. reviewed by Joseph V. Madia, MD Date: January 30, 2012 Why Relevant: its a branch of the nature vs. nurture debate, applied to the likelihood of criminal activity, and whether or not genetics is the main role or not. How it Influenced My Thinking: there are certain times during development that "nurture" could have an influence on the likelihood of being involved in crime, and some are genetically pre-disposed to be more violent. overall, it is a complex subject, but i believe both play a role in development. Credibility of Source: based on research conducted by university professors, including criminologist J.C. Barnes, Ph.D.

The WHO also recommends that infants/toddlers continue to be breastfed for two years or more. The statement also covers some of the benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby. How This Influenced My Thinking: Breastfeeding long term is biologically normal, but not socially normal. The more we see the benefits and see mothers continuing to breastfeed, the more socially normal it will become. Credibility of Source: The World Health Organization is credible and bases it's statements off of research findings.
