Title: What Influences Child Development? Author: Chaplinspeaks Date Published: March 24, 2012 Why relevant and Summary: While not necessarily referring to Bronfenbrenner's model specifically, she hit all of the same points as used in his model. She went into much more depth explaining not only the influences but also why it is likely to influence a child's development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article didn't influence my thinking one way or another, because I found the same information in our textbook, but it did help me to understand the model in more depth because she thoroughly explained everything. Credibility of Source: I feel like this source is very credible. She has a MSW and seems to be very knowledgable and has done her research.

How this influenced my thinking: I was able to get a more in depth understanding of Bronfenbrenners theory on influential factors that determines a child developmental outcomes. For the audio-visual learner, this is a great resource for gaining basic understanding of Brofenbrenner's Ecological Model. How This Influenced My Thinking: It helped me, as an auditory learner to better absorb the information. Credibility of Source: 8; It lists her references at the end of the video.

How This Influenced My Thinking: Encouraged a recognition of the presence of Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems in my own life and in my own experiences. Credibility of Source: BSU

Title: Urie Bronfenbrenner and Child Development Author: Angela Oswalt Date Published: Jan. 17, 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: This page is relevant because it speaks of Urie Bronfenbrenner's model of development. The main focus is on child and adolescent development. It compares Urie's model to other theoris of development. This is a great starting point if you want to learn about Freud, Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg and Urie Bronfenbrenner. How This Influenced My Thinking: From this model I understood that how a child develops is influenced from the systems in the child's life. However, when taking microsystem into consideration and the important people in the child's life, the way the child acts towards the microsystem (people) also influences how those people will act towards the child. Credibility of Source: No citations or references. Came from a mental help site.

How This Influenced My Thinking: This entry helped me understand the systems a bit better. Credibility of Source: its a 17 page document covring many ideas and theories, it has many links connected to it.

Title: Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory Author: Dede Paquette and John Ryan Date Published: 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: Explains Bronfenbrenner's theory and connects it to modern child development and compares this to child development when the economy was more industrial, less technological. It also explains Bronfenbrenner's concerns with our technological world. The 5th page looks at the human body as a part of a person's microsystem, which was fascinating, especially since the textbook doesn't seem to consider this. How This Influenced My Thinking: Introduced the idea of the human body as being part of the microsystem - new to me! Also, I learned that this model can play a big role in influencing public policies, which is refreshing because as a student, it's easy to get caught up in this thinking that the classroom stuff isn't relevant or doesn't easily apply to the real world… but it can! Credibility of Source: Pretty good - the work cites a lot of educational resources, and I read the company profile, which seems to be run by qualified people.

How This Influenced My Thinking: It hasn't particularly influenced my thinking but has given a better understanding of how the theory applies. Credibility of Source: Good- (.edu website)

As well as stating what the theory is, the site also goes over in detail, all the different systems associated with Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory. There is also an illustration with various terms that provides links to sites that explain the implications of each theory. How it influenced my thinking: This site influenced my thinking in a positive way because it broke down what each system was, what it entailed, and gave examples of what was being discussed. Credibility of source: The source is very credible and is riddled with citations and works cited pages. The link to it also ends in usd.edu which means it is probably a site made by colleges for colleges.

It also gives examples of the five different concepts and applies it to adolescent's behavior. How This Influenced My Thinking: This blog helped me make the relationship between the five stages not only a child's perspective but in an adolescents perspective. Credibility of Source: I wouldn't call this blog very credible but it gives good examples of the five concepts of the theory.

This product is simple, there are two different models, but basically allow baby the safety of sleeping with mom and dad while being close. How This Influenced My Thinking: Knowing the potential dangers of cosleeping, I would encourage friends and family to consider this option for their baby, and for myself in the future. Title: A review of successful aging models: Proposing proactive coping as an important additional strategy Author: Carolijn Ouwehand, Denise T.D. de Ridder, Jozien M. Bensing Date Published: Aug. 3, 2006 Why relevant and summary: This is a really great look into aging successfully and what that process entails. It delves into selective optimization with compensation. The authors argue that proactive coping - attempting to prevent potential stressors that are the cause of this decrease in resources - may be a valuable strategy for successful aging. The authors also present this theory as a method of postponing disengagement from daily activities. How this influenced my thinking: I have not given much thought to aging, although I know it is happening and will continue to happen. I've always just kind of viewed the elderly with a distant form of respect coupled with a bit of sorrow. Let's face it, who wants to get old? Yet, this will happen to all of us unless (god forbid) some unforseen tragedy strikes first. Reading about ways to gracefully and successfully age and avoid or postpone disengagement, will go a long way as people enter older adulthood. When I reach older adulthood, I hope to be as active as that 106 year old man who started running marathons in his 80s!

Summary and Why Relevant: Soon after the publication of "Growing Old," sociologists developed other models of aging that contradicted disengagement. Two resulting theories of aging offer a softer outlook on the transition from able adult to dependent senior. Both assert that the elderly remain a viable part of society until death, and that society places value in the role of seniors. Title: Applications and Utility of Urie Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory Author: Brian Lewthwaite (ed.) Date Published: Spring 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This journal from the Manitoba Education Research Network, summarizes several research studies that apply Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory. One of the studies, The Importance of Local Environment for Promoting Student Engagement in Learning by Janet McVittie and Danette Senterre, is particularly interesting and relevant. This is a direct application of how the microsystems outside the classroom affect the microsystem of the classroom, and how the mesosystems and exosystems affect classroom engagement. When children come into the classroom, they bring with them the values and habits of their exosystem and participate in their classroom based on how they are situated in their other microsystems. (McVittie & Senterre) How This Influenced My Thinking: Based on personal experiences, I can understand how our circumstances in our mesosystems and Microsystems can affect our performance in school. At the age of 14, I became and orphan when my only parent died. In retrospect, this event and the subsequent events that resulted from it deeply affected my academic progress. In other words, the tragic events in my family microsystem had a major impact on my school microsystem, as well as on my various mesosystems. Credibility of Source: The University of Manitoba Centre for Research in Youth, Science Teaching and Learning seems like a highly credible source.

Title: Bronfenbrenner Ecological Theory Author: Yukti Ahuja Date Published: No date listed, but it was written after 2005 because that was the date on several of the sources listed in the paper Why Relevant: It talks about how we can use Bronfenbrenner's theory to look at how we are raising children in today's world where parents may be busier and have less time to be involved in their children's lives. This lack of contact greatly affects a child's microsystem How this influenced my thinking: It made me think about the changes that have happened over the last few decades and how they have affected the lives of children that are being born in today's world. Credibility: Not sure about the credibility, there was no specific publisher listed, but the paper was well written, thoughtful and contained good sources in it.
