Feedback from Instructional Designers wanted!!! - 0 views

Feedback for Instructional Design experts wanted! Looking for feedback from those who want to impact the field of instructional design! Contribute 15 minutes to an online survey on Instructional Design, Online Quality, and Technology Practice today! Looking for novice to expert Instructional Designers with online experience. My name is Eric Bose, an instructional design technology practitioner and a PhD learner at Capella University in the Instructional Design for Online Learning specialization. I am working on my dissertation that examines the potential relationships between practiced instructional competencies, technological abilities, and quality standards of online learning. I want to hear from you how technology and media have impacted your practice. You do not have to be an expert instructional designer, technology, or quality standards, but should have practiced instructional design in the online space at some point. The hope is to understand where relationships may exist between the practice of competencies, technology, and quality amongst instructional designers and I need your help to get us there. I am actively seeking participants for this research study and this should only take about 15 minutes to complete.

Developing Communities of Practice - 1 views

  •
Social media allows friends, family, and co-workers to easily stay connected. Those same tools can be used to establish a community of practice (CoP) where participants connect to nurture and learn from one another. "Many ideas grow better when transplanted into another mind than the one where they sprang up." - Oliver Wendell Holmes CoPs are organized either formally or through happenstance. They may focus on promoting a business, or on training and professional development, or even on a hobby or topic. Membership in a CoP requires a passion for the community's domain, a willingness to contribute to its knowledge base, and application of new skills. Both novices and experts have insights to contribute.

Learning from Harvard: MOOC story, pt4 - 0 views

Learning from Harvard: MOOC story, pt4 This latest installment of my quest to find online best practice from inside Harvard's CS50x MOOC took a slightly different direction than previous weeks. Now that I'm in the groove of the course, I have been able to reflect less on working with the content and more on working with my peers in the class. And I've realized that I'm not a very strong asset to them. http://elearningindustry.com/subjects/concepts/item/450-learning-from-harvard-mooc-story-pt4

Soft Skills Training that Actually Isn't - 1 views

  •
Soft Skills Training that Actually Isn't Do you remember taking a "soft skills" training class earlier in your career? Perhaps a sales skills training course? A leadership communication skills class? I'm betting you spent the majority of your training time listening to an instructor, watching a few video segments and taking some notes. What percentage of the time in your class was focused on role plays or other behavioral learning activities that allowed you to practice the skills you were supposed to learn? Lack of Skill Practice Shrinks Training Effectiveness

A New Way to Enable Today's Experts and Learners - 0 views

  •
A New Way to Enable Today's Experts and Learners Typical learning systems tend to focus on the development of traditional training, deployment of learning content, and logistics of learning events. However, they do little to capture and retain valuable business knowledge. For many of today's businesses, this knowledge is not just about how to conduct transactions but how, when, and why to utilize these transactions within their business process. It's also about employees being able to make the best decisions and being able to apply operational talents and expertise to the ultimate practice of the business - satisfying and delighting customers and constituents. http://elearningindustry.com/subjects/companies/item/419-new-way-experts-learners-learning-training

Getting Started with SCORM: How does SCORM really work? - 0 views

Getting Started with SCORM: How does SCORM really work? The purpose of this series of articles is to provide an easy to understand technical explanation of how exactly the SCORM protocol works. One of the things that greatly surprised me when I first began working with SCORM was that there seemed to be a surprising lack of good, practical technical documentation. http://elearningindustry.com/getting-started-with-scorm-how-does-scorm-really-work

eLearning 101 Part 3: Development Roles - 1 views

  •
eLearning 101 Part 3: Development Roles This section includes the roles and responsibilities that are included during the development process. Some roles are mandatory during any course development process, while other roles may be optional depending on the needs of the course. All roles should be identified and assigned at the beginning of the project. Every person involved in the project should be notified at the beginning of the project of his or her role. Note: one person may have multiple roles. It is a good standard of practice to form a committee to identify the roles and expectations of each team member and to have each person accept their role in writing to ensure they understand the requirements of the position. See communication log example, free download at the bottom of the article.

Instructional Design: A Military Perspective - 0 views

  •
Since Instructional Design owes much of its theory and practice to the military, it seems only reasonable to use military terms to describe it. Here is a military objective: Given a platoon of light infantry, take hill 451 and hold it until relieved. Artillery and air support may be called in as required. Performance, conditions, criterion: In our profession as in the military, the last two do not count without the first. Given a clearly stated a performance problem, the instructional systems technologist will provide a firing solution consisting of a performance-based, criterion referenced objective and the lowest cost, highest efficiency medium to deliver it in 4 hours or less. I use the term "firing solution" deliberately because there is a direct historic military analogy. The Allied bombing campaigns of WWII used what is termed "saturation bombing" strategy. Due to the lack of guidance and aiming tools, hundreds of bombs would be dropped in the hope at least a few would hit the target. In spite of the cost in lives and resources, it was the best they could do and deemed necessary.

Screen Tutorials in Technical Learning - 0 views

  •
In technical subjects, learners respond well and benefit from the inclusion of imagery and video. How Do I Make a Good Screencast? In technical subjects, learners respond well and benefit from the inclusion of imagery and video. It seems obvious that our preferences in consuming information are changing rapidly today and rely less on textual comprehensiveness and more on brevity and reliance on conceptual images, both static and moving. This may be a driving factor in the new face of e-learning in the 2010s or it may be an effect of learner preferences. Either way, it is imperative designers and developers of technical content at least be aware of these trends and be prepared to accommodate the way learners most effectively consume their material. He then goes on to lucidly explain how we can successfully overcome this resistance by using conventional wisdoms and how we can cultivate our working-out-loud habits by gradually building on our relationships and making them mutually beneficial.
