It is almost precisely eighteen years since Donald Rumsfeld uttered his now well-regarded commentary on the danger of "unknown unknowns". In "Factfulness", Hans Rosling shares a valuable insight into why we must question our assumptions. In times when we are bombarded with information, when false claims abound, having a disposition towards scepticism seems vital. Rosling urges us to not only question the facts we are presented with but the internal biases which influence how we interpret these facts.

It's not just Google. The Web has wiped out all the basic knowledge about practical critical thinking and problem solving that we used to learn through reinforcement learning - which made us far more able to be independent entities in all kinds of unique and atypical situations. Perhaps this is contributing to the rise of anxiety in young people: without those cognitive tools and skills, people are no longer sure of themselves as they once were.

It is soon the start of a new school year for students in Australia. Our only salvation will be rain but this is not the season for that and the long term forecasts are not promising.
