  • Devices should drive engagement, pique curiosity, and encourage creativity.
  • If teachers design the activity well, students will be too absorbed in what they're doing to be off task.
  • one device to explore
  • another device, they posted
  • They posted their inferences to a shared Padlet wall so they could see one another's posts in real time.
  • they had 20 minutes to complete the activity, which was enough time for them to accomplish the task without getting bored or wandering off task.
  • Students have more opportunities to learn from one another, and they begin to value their peers as resources in the classroom.
  • It's hard for me to imagine that devices are a distraction if students are challenged and engaged.
  • This collaboration makes it hard for a student to be off task because the group relies on each member to contribute to the final product.

What meal would your team be? - The Learner's Way - 5 views

  •
What makes a team truly great? What are the qualities which allow some teams to perform at a high level while others seem trapped? One approach to this question is to consider a team as though they were a meal. Thinking metaphorically, we ask what are the ingredients that make a great team and how might we combine them to produce the best results?

For those about to make a resolution - The Learner's Way - 4 views

  •
With the year rushing to a close, this seems like the right time to set goals for the year ahead. To pause and consider what next and make some personal promises.  The trouble is that the history of setting New Year Resolutions is littered with failures. It is so easy at this point  in time to make commitments for change and then just a few weeks later to have forgotten what they were.

Managing the pressure of the 'difficult' class - The Learner's Way - 33 views

  •
Sometimes, it seems the class you are teaching is more than you can cope with. The truth is all teachers face times like this. The sad part is that many good teachers decide that the best move for them in these times is to leave the profession; a trend we need to fix.

Reflections from The Future of Education Conference - The Learner's Way - 9 views

  •
The Future of Education is a topic often discussed, and at the recent gathering of educators in Florence, it was the title and theme for the conference. Now in its ninth year, The Future of Education is an international conference that attracts educators from around the world and across all domains touched by education. The conference is an inspiring two days of discussion and sharing, with the city of Florence, the centre of the Renaissance, providing a constant reminder of what might be possible when creativity and critical thinking combine. Here are my key takeaways from this event.

Dropbox - Simplify your life - 95 views

Use dropbox to keep track of files you need at home, work, and anywhere else you might be. It provides you the ability to access your files from any location, allow others to "drop" files into your dropbox, and to share any files you have placed in there. You can use it for student work or just as a personal productivity tool.
    • Kalin Wilburn

It has to be downloaded on your computer so if you want to use this at school you will need your tech coordinator's permission.

This is an amazing solution for storing, sharing, and back up your data. The ability to access files from any computer & mobile devices makes this a great solution. Up to 2GB storage free! Learn more about the public folder to share files with others, while keeping your other files private. I have it on both my Apple computers and on two PCs. This rocks!

I have it too, and have used it for a couple of years now to go between my mac at school and PC at home. I recently blogged about it here: http://www.educationtechnologyblog.com/1/post/2010/08/dropbox-for-educators.html

Social Bookmarking and Diigo - Student Learning with Diigo - 146 views

This explains what Diigo does, what the main functions are for the classroom, and that it can be saved in Delicious.  They refer to Delcious as the grandfather of all bookmarking in that it was the first but just bookmarks and collects.  This would allow annotation and collaboration.

  • Social Bookmarking is simply making bookmarks available to a social network. Rather than storing bookmarks on a local computer, the bookmarks are stored to a social bookmarking website. By default, the bookmarks are available for the network to view.

I found many useful links along with this resource. It clearly points out advantages of using Diigo in education. It also shares how to sync to another popular social bookmarking site. I highly recommend checking this article out.

Striving to preserve Truth - The Learner's Way - 12 views

  •
What purposes does education serve? What needs of humanity does education serve? What might the product of our labours be like and how might our efforts contribute to the greater good? These are questions we have long struggled with but with but it seems that in the current times we might need to rethink how we answer these questions.

Girls in Tech - Reflections from VIVID Ideas - The Learner's Way - 12 views

  •
Sydney has become a beacon that brings people together and sparks conversations. Most recently the conversation centred on the topic of girls in tech and what might be done to re-dress the gender balance in STEAM subjects and related career pathways. Sponsored by INTEL this Vivid Ideas event drew a mix of entrepreneurs, educators and tech luminaries to the Museum of Contemporary Art on a Saturday afternoon to share their ideas on what might be done.
