In this gallery are our favorite graphics of the year. They're in no particular order (though we did save a treat for last). Each tells a story with elegant simplicity, and sometimes even beauty. "A new online platform is helping teachers use stories to make content meaningful and engaging for their students.  Visual storytelling is a powerful way for teachers looking to reach students as they introduce new topics and concepts.  Legend is a terrific website that makes it easy for teachers to use video, images, and text to transform the way they get content in the hands of their students."

This is the third article in a series published by Zane Education on Visual Learning and the use of subtitled educational videos. This article looks at the benefits of using subtitled educational video by the average child or student that does not suffer from any difficulties or disabilities. Very useful information for teachers and parents alike!

"It's often easy to get stuck into a narrow view of what a particular field of study entails, but as Dominic Walliman reveals in his impressive science infographics, there's much more than meets the eye when thinking of particular STEM subjects. Walliman demonstrates the diversity and complexity of biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, and mathematics in visual maps that explore the breadth of each field. Walliman, who also created animated videos exploring his science infographics, manages to pack all the shades of each complex field on one page. For instance, the Map of Mathematics travels from the origins and foundations of the field to the differences between pure mathematics and applied mathematics. Likewise, chemistry is divided between rules and different sub-topics like biochemistry and inorganic chemistry, with fun illustrations to clearly show what falls underneath each area. Consider them roadmaps to possible careers or cheat sheets to figuring out how quantum physics is related to the theory of relativity. Best of all, by studying the visual maps, it becomes easy to see how all these scientific fields overlap and fit together like a puzzle."

"I've been writing about apps for a long time, but they are not of equal importance. Microsoft's free Seeing AI app may be a game changer for people with visual impairments.  The research project is designed to turn "turn the visual world into an audio experience," narrating the world for those who cannot see it, in real time using artificial intelligence."

"Today's post is on the new Google Forms' guide we published a few months ago. The guide, which is based on instructions and insights from Docs Help center, walks teachers through the process of setting up, editing and sharing forms using the new Google Forms platform. "After posting about Digital Taxonomy for iPad, today we are sharing with you the web version. We tried to come up with web tools that go with each of Bloom's thinking levels. Some of these tools can fit in different levels, however, for practical reasons we limited our selection to five tools per level. You can print, share and embed the visual the way you like as long as you credit us as the source. The Android version is coming soon."

"It is well known, that the 21st century student is constantly bombarded with digital imagery. Whether it is from television, social media, advertisers, or smart phones, the relentless visual stimulation that students face has some declaring it as detrimental to student development. It is argued that with so much visual stimulation, it had become harder for students to keep their focus, hampering concentration, and hindering their ability to process information. Though this can be debated, it imperative that teachers take the necessary steps to combat these potential negative effects. This has forced teachers to recognize the importance of imagery and it's use in their classrooms."

"After posting about the "10 ways to get your students engaged" here is another good visual I learned about from Mindshift and which outlines different levels of engagement. As I have already argued elsewhere here in this blog, getting today's students deeply engaged (the first level of engagement below) in the learning experience taking place in class is not an easy task. Unless students see a direct relevance between what they are going to learn and how that information will help them them in their actual life , it becomes hard to hook and maintain their attention. Proponents of socio-cultural linguistics emphasize the importance of "context" in learning. Learning materials that are contextualized and tailored to speak to the immediate context of the learners are more likely to get students engaged and hence increase their rate of retention and comprehensibility."
