I hope it all comes together for you (and that the current busy pace will fall off a bit as the release is finalized).

When I am traveling and don't have access to my own system, I occasionally make use of "internet cafes", hotel business offices, or walk-in business services such as 'Kinkos' or 'staples'. In these situations, a USB drive is invaluable, provided you can reach one of the system's USB ports. I don't know if that possible in common libraries, but if it is, this may work for you.

embedded "-" characters in tags. - 56 views

My original question seems to have been over-looked (perhaps because I did not 'tag" it effectively, and I could not find a way to edit it that would allow me to add a Tag.).

    Please see...

    http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/1080

Furthermore, as of this morning, when I try to use the toolbar to access my tags, all I get is a few lines including some advertising for "Mercedes Car Benz New Slr undefined" that looks suspiciously like spam.

    Thanks.

Yes, they were in the drop down box. My apologies, for not having immediately captured a screen grab, but I was also encountering problems due to excessive aggregate response times (flickr - the site I was annotating) was having a bit of trouble with their ad server and TrailFire was also apparently suffering from slow response. As a result, I had to break out of the chain.

Obviously, I'll keep an eye out for this and will try to get an image for you during the next week.

Thanks for the bug fix. This is now working well, which is the good news. On a slightly bad note, now that its working, I can't get the apparent spam to display again, since (obviously) the intended material is being displayed.

I have little choice but to consider this matter "closed" successfully.

    Thanks, again.

    Update...

I managed to recreate this (all be it, accidentally) and I even managed to get a screen grab, although I think you will be able to re-create it yourself. The "apparent SPAM" results from using "undefined" as the "Tags:" value in the Toolbar's "Edit filter".

Now that I have a better understanding of what I did to generate this, I do not consider this to be related to the 'embedded "-" character' bug at all.

Thanks for your help in both these matters.

(If you would like the screen grab for any reason, I don't mind sending it.)

    Wade...

I've had a persistent problem with Sticky(s) not being rendered on pages for several months. This has been an "intermittent" problem that generally clears up within an hour or so, but this can cause unnecessary work (if I forget that a page has been tagged before, and re-tag it, I generally end up with a bit of a mess that I need to clean up later.

I think the main pages in which I've noticed this are all at flickr and are all relatively densely covered with Sticky annotations. For various reasons, I've been forming an assumption that this problem is related to aggregate response times since flickr itself can be slow, and their 'ad server' is also frequently a further delaying factor.

Since others are also questioning response times, I can start to pay more attention to this and try to capture some meaningful data for you, if you think that would be of any interest.

    Regards,
    Hans

Tags with embedded "-" characters no longer work. - 53 views

In an effort to work around some of the tag formating issues and to achieve compatibility with other systems I use, I've been embedding "-" characters in my tags (for quite some time). They are particularly useful in date strings such as "2007-07"...

As of today, none of these tags work. They all report "You have no tags..." in spite of the fact that these tags appear in the Cloud box.

Should I wait for a fix or start converting the tags? Can you provide any hints regarding the acceptability of other characters that can be keyed, as embedded tag characters?

    Thanks.

    Joel...

    Since you asked...

I think that the idea of making this an option is a good one. I also think such an option should be part of a personalization set of options so that each member can set it to meet their own preferences. Finally, I think there might have to be an element of 'stickiness' to the option so that the current behavior of a 'collapsed' view is not wiped out by simply picking a different tag to display (which currently causes the next view to again be rendered with the cloud 'expanded').

I, for one, don't think this is an urgent fiox. I thik it can be added into a next release, where I gather may already be extending the personal options capability.

    Maggie...

Your reply raises a question that is of considerable interest to me.

I use DiiGo to Annotate and Tag pages that may exist only on (semi) private systems located behind firewalls. How does diigo's caching come into play in these situations? I'm asking since I can imagine several very different scenarios depending on how caching has been implemented and I would like to have enough of an understanding of the diigo implementation to adequately appreciate the security considerations that may apply.

Thank you for taking the time to reply and for providing a response that it quite acceptable.

I will continue to use DiiGo, even for my most Private pages, within the confines of both my companies and my own personal systems.

It seems to me that it should be possible to achieve this objective at least partially by using DiiGo to annotate Comments and to T\tag them with a Tag that indicates a relative Rank.

I'll try to poke at this a bit next month if there is any further indication of interest.

In fact, this approach is exactly what "someone" is asking about in the other post about using Diigo to annotate Diigo.

I've been thinking about some of the various issues related to Private and Semi-Private communications for a while. Obviously email is one (of a great number of possible)solution(s). I'm curious as to whether you've thought of using a Private or Invited Group here at Diigo for this purpose?

I've done a bit of preliminary testing and, so far, it seems to be quite acceptable. It even has the advantage that I can share a copy of Sticky among groups when I create it.

As for the 'verification' of a person's apparent Identity and authorized affiliations, this seems to be a very large Subject throughout the whole internet. The line of thought that I seem to be gravitating towards is based on the Community "TrustMetrics" that are so actively discussed within wiki communities. In this case, for example, I am much more comfortable entering into an exchange with someone posting under an alias of "fuzbolero" than I would normally be, simply because I have already been in communication with "maggie_diigo" and I am prepared to accept her evident acceptance of you.

This whole "identity" issue is relatively complicated when you track it across even a small number of "use" cases. Interestingly, after a several years of participating in related discussions, I've obviously settled on the wiki practice of use of "RealName". Life has gotten much better since doing so, in spite of my initial concerns and "fears".

(This reminds me I really need to add my picture to this site, since I am planning to become a more active member. Maggie... (since I'm likely to be 'promoting' the concepts of TransClusion here)... it sure would be nice if I could just add a link to the avatar-icon and have one of the (too many already existing ones) appear there, rather than having to add yet another item to my toDoUponUpdateOfImage task lists.

case-sensitive tags - any chance of it happening? - 383 views

discussion tag case CamelCase case-sensitive help suggestion
  • Hans Wobbe

    Maggie...

I fully understand your reservations about supporting case sensitive tags, but after considerable research I have come to the conclusion that I personally should not hold back, just because many others are not yet concerned about something. (Since my obvious bias in favour of this is already showing, I should probably state that it comes from years of integrating wikis into Information Technologies; even going so far as to accept them as one of my primary productivity tools.)

One suggestion that may 'bridge the gap' is the use of a presonal preferences switch. Unfortunately, I do not know enough about the DiiGo (see... I'm such a creature of habit that I automatically used CamelCase) to know if this would be so obviously prohibitively expensive, that it should be ruled out immediately, or not.

One of the reasons that I am supporting this request is evident if you look at the Tags that I've been creating here. Obviously my needs for visual distinction are such that I've gone to considerable lengths to devise tags that use special characters to differentiate them. This is even more important to me since one of the very nice features I rely on DiiGo for , is its generation of RssFeeds for tag sets that are 'intersections' of tags (logical ANDs). These feeds are automatically routed to other web services applications I rely on, dramatically increasing the value of the Bookmarks that I create here and apply Tags to.

For you additional information, this is of sufficient value to me that I now frequently find myself wondering about DiiGo's Business Model. After all, I would be negligent if I become dependant upon something wthout knowing what I am likely to have to pay for it in the longer term. In effect, what I'm saying is DiiGo is sufficiently valuable to me, that I worry about its financial viability, since I don't see how you are generating Revenues to offset the obvious Expenses.

    But, I've "digressed."

DiiGo is a womderful service. I sincerely hope it prospers since I find it very helpful and obviously would like to be able to keep using it. Ideally, I'd even like to be able to offer reasonable suggestions regarding possible enhancements.

    Regards,

May I ask why it would be definitely annoying?

My interest for asking is that I am currently of the opinion that I (personally) would really like to have Case sensitivity for reasons that I consider to be "pros". Since there obviously, there may be "Cons" that I've over-looked, I'm curious as to the reasons you may have.

    Thanks, in advance...

    Fridemar...

Would you like to join me in structuring requests into a bit more of an "architecture"? What I mean by that is...

    * The many of the wiki solutions you are promoting already contain WysiWyg capabilities, so it should be possible for us to design a few effective HyperText "pragmas" that provide a relatively seamless way of melding the best function of each core component. Consider, for example, the ability to merely have a Diigo Sticky appear within a wiki page as as part of a standard oddmuse TransClusion.
** I think this would avoid "re-inventing" the wheel AND would allow individual SubWikis to retain their own "look and feel" through their existing ability to overlay local CSS.

I think it would be relatively easy to demonstrate the potential by simply designing a layout and a static HTML prototype using the free resources of the .../ODD/ wikiHive.

    Interested? -- HansWobbe

    > By the way, why don't you offer a uniform WysiWyg input field for all postings, comments, sticky notes? You have the modules. Your rich text input offers more options, than the input-field of TrailFire, but it would be practical to have the sourceview too.
