This document outlines key aspects related to Common Sense Education's original Digital Citizenship Curriculum Scope & Sequence as compared to our all-new curriculum in 2019. Overall, lessons and other resources included in the new curriculum are easier to use and more relevant for teachers and students today. You will find an explanation of the topic differences, lesson differences, and recommendations for your classroom, school, or district to update your curriculum and plans with our new resources.

In 2018 the Netherlands started the development of a new curriculum framework for primary, lower and upper secondary education. New themes in curriculum are Digital Literacy, citizenship and a strong focus on 21st century skills. Digital Literacy is defined as a combination of ICT skills, media literacy, information literacy and Computational Thinking. Starting with a vision on a theme such as Digital Literacy and using this vision as a starting point for describing big ideas. For Digital Literacy eight big ideas were described: data and information, safety and privacy, using and controlling, communication and cooperation, digital citizenship, digital economy, applying and designing, and sustainability. Computational Thinking is integrated in each of these big ideas. The underlying framework for Computational Thinking is based on ISTE and CSTA and each big idea is specified as a learning trajectory describing learning objectives leading to a new legal curriculum framework in 2022.

This curriculum, produced by a working party within CAS, describes in concrete terms what a Computing curriculum at school might look like. It uses the same structure as the National Curriculum Programmes of Study: importance of the discipline; key concepts; key processes; range and content; and level descriptors. It is not cast in stone, so please send feedback. In particular, it is intended to be comprehensible to school teachers (so please tell us if it isn't).

In 2015 a curriculum framework for Computational Thinking was developed for lower secondary education in the Netherlands. The framework is based on ISTE and CSTA, translated for the curriculum in the Netherlands and validated by experts, teachers, teacher educators and publishers. Based on this validated curriculum a new learning trajectory was designed for primary education, in collaboration with teachers and principals from three schools.

Dat zegt Sabine Duijmelinck, docent Nederlands op De Nassau in Breda. Deze ontwikkelschool voor Digitale Geletterdheid bij curriculum.nu werkt al jaren volledig digitaal. Zo heeft iedere leerling een tablet met apps die schoolboeken en papieren lesmethodes vervangen.

"Responding to this request, the NCCA carried out research including an audit of curriculum policy related to coding in 22 jurisdictions; a more in-depth investigation in six jurisdictions; and a review of literature on computational thinking. Concluding in a final report with key discussion points and future directions in relation to integrating coding and computational thinking in a redeveloped primary school curriculum."

Computational Thinking (CT) is a problem solving process that includes a number of characteristics and dispositions. CT is essential to the development of computer applications, but it can also be used to support problem solving across all disciplines, including the humanities, math, and science. Students who learn CT across the curriculum can begin to see a relationship between academic subjects, as well as between life inside and outside of the classroom."

De voorstellen die door curriculum.nu zijn gepresenteerd, vormen niet alleen een belangrijke bijdrage aan de discussie over de toekomst van het Nederlandse onderwijs. Ze zijn ook een belangrijk moment in de Nederlandse onderwijsgeschiedenis. Niet eerder hebben zovelen uit het onderwijsveld systematisch en gecoördineerd nagedacht over de grondslagen van vakgebieden en onderwijsdomeinen, over uitdagingen en mogelijkheden, en over de boeiende en altijd weer complexe vertaalslag naar de onderwijspraktijk.

De Verenigde Staten hebben een lange traditie van media literacy in het onderwijs, recentelijk is daar digital literacy bij gekomen. In Nederland staan we aan de vooravond van de structurele introductie van beide, met mediawijsheid als onderdeel van digitale geletterdheid. Verschillende scholen en organisaties zoals SLO, Kennisnet en de bibliotheken zijn al aan de slag met vraagstukken en experimenten rondom de invoering - mede ingegeven door het onderwijsvernieuwingsproject van OCW: Curriculum.nu. De overheid heeft daarbij onder meer de implementatie van het nieuwe leergebied Digitale geletterdheid voor ogen.

The education systems of the 59 countries that participated in this survey have demonstrated remarkable resilience, flexibility and commitment to education in having established strategies for education continuity, in extremely challenging conditions, during the Covid-19 pandemic. For the most part, those strategies were viewed positively by senior administrators, teachers, and school and other education administrators, in terms of their implementation and the results they achieved in providing a considerable number of students access to at least part of the curriculum.

"Ontwikkelschool Bernadette in Loo (po) hield samen met het Candea College in Duiven een innovatiedag waar leerlingen uit groep 7/8 en brugklassers samenwerkten aan digitale vaardigheden. Zo ontwierpen ze het huis van de 21e eeuw, manipuleerden ze foto's en moesten ze voor escapeboxen veilige wachtwoorden bedenken. 'Zo maak je meteen de doorlopende leerlijn tussen po en vo concreet', aldus innovatiecoördinator Judith van Iersel."

Het DigCompEdu-raamwerk is ontwikkeld als Europees referentiekader om de digitale competenties voor docenten te beschrijven. Het is breder dan het curriculum voor digitale geletterdheid. Het gaat dan over: Digitale didactiek, het lesgeven met en gebruik van digitale technologie zoals TPACK Digitale geletterdheid, het lesgeven over digitale technologie

Tussen leerlingen van hetzelfde opleidingsniveau bestaan grote verschillen in digitale geletterdheid. In elke klas zitten zowel heel vaardige als veel minder vaardige leerlingen. Nu digitale geletterdheid mogelijk onderdeel wordt van het curriculum, staan leraren voor de ingewikkelde taak met die leerlingverschillen om te gaan, in een vakgebied dat voor henzelf ook nog nieuw is. Dat laat de Leerlingmonitor Digitale Geletterdheid 2020 van Kennisnet zien."

"In October 2015, the Department published The Digital Strategy for Schools 2015-2020 Enhancing Teaching Learning and Assessment, the next stage of the ICT in Schools programme. The Digital Strategy for Schools provides a rationale and a Government action plan for integrating ICT into teaching, learning and assessment practices in schools over five years.  This Strategy builds on previous strategies in the area of ICT integration and is the result of research and extensive consultation with education partners and stakeholders. It supports the overall strategy of the Department in a number of key areas including curriculum implementation, skills development, teacher education and learner outcomes"
