he Google self-driving car project has been around for some time, but has crossed a milestone of over 300,000 miles tested. If you hang out in Mountain View around the Google Plex at all, you'll see these cars driving around with funny contraptions on the roof. You might also spot one on the highway, it's kind of interesting to watch, but pay attention to the road.

In a span of less than an hour, a rogue algorithm programmed to exploit market efficiencies by buying and selling stocks repeatedly for profit actually inverted the logic of Wall Street: instead of buying low, selling low, the algorithm began to buy high, sell low. All told, the rogue algorithm resulted in a $440 million loss for Knight Capital, causing many to question the state of our modern financial markets

The Federal Bureau of Investigation's agents have finally made the leap into the future, upgrading from paper files to a digital case management system at a cost of more than $600 million. Sentinel, the agency's all-digital system, features a web browser-style user interface that allows agents to enter and review information about cases or suspects. Agents can do quick searches to see if one of their cases has any similarities to other cases, an improvement which should speed up investigations. Additionally, agents can electronically sign documents using an identification badge reader.

The District of Columbia made the switch on July 25 to video visitation, a growing trend in the corrections field. To proponents, the video systems provide a more convenient, safer, thriftier alternative to in-person visits. Some jurisdictions even make money, by charging for the video visits. Critics, including prisoner advocates and corrections officers concerned with how prisoners fare once they are released, fear that the video visits allow less meaningful contact with family and could hurt inmates' morale.

Every so often a piece of technology can become a lever that lets people move the world, just a little bit. The Arduino is one of those levers. It started off as a project to give artists access to embedded micro-processors for interaction design projects, but I think it's going to end up in a museum as one of the building blocks of the modern world. It allows rapid, cheap, prototyping for embedded systems. It turns what used to be fairly tough hardware problems into simpler software problems.
