There are many exciting things happening in the online video industry, but to my mind, none is more noteworthy than the radical transformation of YouTube. YouTube is shedding its scruffy adolescence and seeking to redefine what entertainment means in the online video era. In fact, with each passing day, it becomes more evident that YouTube is building a parallel universe to the traditional world of cable TV, targeting niches that have long been mined by a multitude of specialty channels. This theme will crystallize as 2012 unfolds.

"More video is uploaded to YouTube in one month than the 3 major US TV networks created in 60 years." Hunter Walk, YouTube Director of Product Management, Google in a tweet. Google told TechCrunch Monday that YouTube users now upload 60 hours of video every minute.

Netflix related traffic accounts for almost a third of all information downloaded in North America during peak usage periods, according to Sandvine, experts in analyzing Internet and broadband trends.   During the most recent period, Netflix's share of Internet traffic increased 44% from the last Sandvine report seven months ago, when Netflix represented approximately 20% of peak download traffic.  In the current report, Netflix traffic was responsible for 29.7% of all Internet related activity, surpassing even peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing technology BitTorrent. This makes Netflix traffic the single largest broadband consumer. When Netflix traffic is added to other real-time entertainment services, including Google's YouTube, the total consumption climbs to nearly half (49.2%) of all North American Internet traffic during peak periods.  The other applications rounding out the top five are BitTorrent (17%), HTTP (17%), YouTube (10%), and Flash Video (4%).  In comparison Facebook only consumed 2% and ITunes just over 3%.

Bizarre details about a YouTube film trailer that's continuing to fuel protests around the Middle East began to emerge late Wednesday evening. The 14-minute trailer for the film, titled "Innocence of Islam," angered many Muslims across the world because of its derogatory stance towards Islam and its depiction of the Prophet Mohammad as a barbarian and abuser of women. One indictator that something was amiss, for example, was that there was no record of a registered real estate broker named Sam Bacile in the state of California.
