This article also explains the correlation between alcohol and drug use and abuse. With this in mind these effects with help me better understand alcohol abuse. This is great insight on negative effect of alcohol. There are the negative effects of marijuana but compared to the impaired non judgmental effects of alcohol the two do not compare. This is a great article because it helps me better understand the correlation between these drugs. Also it gives me more statistical information on how I should present facts and numbers.

Rowling's influence and Oprah's influence all in the same article. This shows me how relevant Oprah has been in the reading of our country. To be put in the same category as the writer of Harry Potter, she must be making a big effect. The article mentions Oprah as being "publishing's darling" and goes into talking about the Oprah effect. This article gives good background information on the effects Oprah has made in reading over the years.

In this prospective study home literacy is considered a multifaceted phenomenon consisting of a frequency or exposure facet (opportunity), an instruction quality facet, a parent-child cooperation facet, and a social-emotional quality facet. In a multiethnic, partly bilingual sample of 89 families with 4-year-old children, living in inner-city areas in the Netherlands, measures of home literacy were taken by means of interviews with the parents and observations of parent-child book reading interactions when the target children were ages 4, 5, and 6 years. At age 7, by the end of Grade 1, after nearly 1 year of formal reading instruction, vocabulary, word decoding, and reading comprehension were assessed using standard tests. Vocabulary at age 4 and an index of the predominant language used at home were also measured in order to be used as covariates. Correlational and multiple regression analyses supported the hypothesis that home literacy is multifaceted. Home literacy facets together predicted more variance in language and achievement measures at age 7 than each of them separately. Structural equations analysis also supported two additional hypotheses of the present research. First, the effects of background factors (SES, ethnicity, parents' own literacy practices) on language development and reading achievement in school were fully mediated by home literacy, home language, and early vocabulary. Second, even after controlling for the effects of early vocabulary and predominant home language, there remained statistically significant effects of home literacy, in particular, opportunity, instruction quality, and cooperation quality. This article describes a study taken of 176 college students to evaluate their patterns of marijuana use as well as its positive and negative effects. Its results found two types of users those that smoked casually and rarely bought product and those that smoked on a regular daily basis. There were both positive and negative effects reported but there were far greater positive reports than negative. The study also described indicators of dependence as well as the tendency of more regular problematic users to combine marijuana use with tobacco and alcohol. This article is helpful because it gives insight to the opinions of those people that actually use the drug being called into question. It addresses both positive and negative effects of use that gives readers a well rounded amount of information on both sides of the argument. It also sheds light how most people that smoke marijuana are at higher risk of using alcohol and tobacco.

I found this study to be extremely valuable to my research. This study examined the effects of high or low stress levels on men and women in their choice of healthy or unhealthy snacking. Results showed that stress levels do, in fact, effect human decision of food choice. Stressful men chose healthier snacks than when they were not stressed, but conversely, stressful women chose unhealthier snacks than when they were not stressed. This factor is extremely beneficial to my research as it may provide an explanation as to why humans make the food choices they do.

In this article it brings up a very good point on how if a teacher is absent, then it will effect the students in their classroom. Some teachers are better than others and that could also effect the students. This study shows that 5-6% are absent days while school is in session. When teachers do take off of work, its hard for the schools to find good substitutes and it then leads to a day of no learning for the students.

This article discusses early alcohol use and abuse among college students. They use surveys and other questioners to access use and abuse among college students. They discuss how early use of alcohol makes students more prone to alcoholism. They use statistical data collected by these surveys. Drug and alcohol use among college students is on the rise. This is a great article for me because I can use this statistical information against alcohol use and it more negative effects rather than marijuana negative effects. There is a lot more interesting statistical data I can use to show evidence of marijuana usage compared to alcohol use. Alcohol use compared to marijuana are a lot different alcohol in the long run is a lot worse for humans. Marijuana is a lot more laid back drug with no dependence.

this was a cool little study i found about how roommates of different race effect your experience at college. this shows brought my mind to think of different directions to take on my community study and how race could possibly effect the tensions and social relationships between two people in the group.

Using Financial Education Curriculum for Teens Today's American teenagers are regarded as "financially illiterate," and lacking sufficient knowledge of personal finance and an understanding of money. The authors examine the effectiveness of the Money Talks program implemented in several California schools. The Money Talks program was designed to inform students about financial subjects relevant to them. The study proved the program had a positive effect on students by administering a post-test and comparing it with one taken before the course

We sought to determine whether literacy mediates the relationship between education and glycemic control among diabetes patients. Methods: We measured educational attainment, literacy using the Short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (s-TOFHLA), and glycemic control (HbA1c) in 395 diabetes patients at a U.S. public hospital. We performed path analysis to compare two competing models to explain glycemic control. The direct effects model estimated how education was related to HbA1c; the mediational model estimated the strength of the direct relationship when the additional pathway from education to literacy to HbA1c was added. Results: Both the model with a direct effect of education on HbA1c and the model with literacy as a mediator were supported by good fit to observed data. The mediational model, however, was a significant improvement, with the additional path from literacy to HbA1c reducing the discrepancy from observed data (p<0.01). After including this path, the direct relationship between education and HbA1c fell to a non-significant threshold. Conclusions: In a low-income population with diabetes, literacy mediated the relationship between education and glycemic control. This finding has important implications for both education and health policy. (Abstract taken from JSTOR.)

Synder outlines an initiative by CPAs around the country to promote financial literacy and improve Americans' wellbeing. Examples of the programs include a one-day workshop for high school seniors to discuss subjects such as credit cards, owning a home and buying a car. The goal is to bring real world applications to teach students about financial literacy. The programs also aim to help military personnel and their families when a parent is deployed, or a unique situation arises that impacts their finances. The author effectively demonstrates how CPAs across the country are taking action to aid in the development of healthy financial habits. Unfortunately, there is no information regarding the effectiveness of these programs and more information is needed.

This survey was taken and it asked students how many times they used alcohol, marijuana or cocaine and how it affected their behavior socially. Demographics and social class plays roles in the different users in college. This article is great for me because it helps me better understand usage and its social behavioral effects on college students. This gives me information of the prevalence of marijuana use among college students and the rates of use. This is statistical data of 1,400 students helps me use and understand the information in my paper. With this information I can compare it to other articles and surveys taken.

This journal also has some prestigious Universities with different statistical information that gives me broader information on use and abuse of drugs.
