D#3 HW#1.1 Contrast - Basic Principles of Design - 0 views

    • Alex Portela

In the text book Basics of Design page 44 it specifically gives examples of contrasting with letters. Figure 3-6 uses thin lines for the work "thin" and a wider font for the word "wide". This website specifically gives an explanation of the text word uses.
  • contrast can work with any design element
  • Contrast in design is an accentuation of the differences between elements in a design

  • Change the fonts. The font size, font weight, or font family can all provide contrast to your text. Headlines provide a lot of contrast to surrounding text. Links provide great contrast in text. The color change and the addition of an underline work well to contrast from the surrounding text. Use different sized images and elements. If you have a section of text that is the primary focus of a page, you might make it large and all the

Contrast - Basic Principles of Design
  •
I like this article because it gives the general information about contrast for beginners like me. It is easy to read and the use of bullet points makes it easy to follow. This article is really useful because it relates to web design specifically rather than just design/art.
  •
This website explains the importance of using contrast beyond just color contrast. Using font, layout shapes, images etc one can use contrast without using only color
  •
A helpful site giving information and resources for contrast principles in design. A very nice guide. : )

The book describes on page 56 that there are a variety of contrast techniques. Color is a noticeable contrast but we learn that this is only part of many methods. This site gives a variety of different techniques like color, size, shape, and position.

This was my favorite page found on my search for content related to chapter three of basics of design. This site gives a great outline of what the design principle contrast is and how to properly use it in page design. It describes and shows examples of positional, shape, color, and size contrast. This was a wonderful site that supported and reinforced examples right out of the book. I really loved the great and creative sites that it had in it's examples and I felt inspired to aim for design of that quality.
  •
Summary: Contrast is usually kept simple, like color for the beginners but there are other elements to consider when it comes to contrast in any design. The first thing that most of learn in color contrast and the obvious of color is the white and black which is okay but there are other ways to use color to grab attention as the examples under color with explain. Next to color that grabs attention is size, the bigger the better as the writer explains because it shows that something is important and will draw the read to read the rest. Then we have shape contrast which gives a different feel to make other things notable cause no one likes to see a plain and boring design. Finally there is positional contrast that makes hierarchy standout by using different alignments. I found this website to the be the best because it touch on everything in the reading and gave examples to show what is meant on each topic.

Balance - Basic Principles of Design - 0 views

  • Balance is a visual interpretation of gravity in the design. Large, dense elements appear to be heavier while smaller elements appear to be lighter.
    • Delaney Hensley

This is explained in chapter four as the wieght of elements. Which is the main focus of balance.
  • Most Web pages are built on a grid system, and this creates a form of balance for the page right away.
    • Delaney Hensley

A grid is a good way to arrange parts of a whole in an equal way.
  • Centering is the easiest way to get a symmetrically balanced page.
    • Delaney Hensley

Centering the main focal point is important
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • To balance it asymmetrically, you might have a small element farther away from the centerline. If you think of your design as being on a teeter-totter or seesaw, a lighter element can balance a heavier one by being further away from the center of gravity.
    • Delaney Hensley

Light and dark are good ways to balance a page aswell as making things look closer or further. but mostly in art.
  • If the content of your design is also intended to be uncomfortable or make people think, a discordantly balanced design can work well.
    • Delaney Hensley

making something complicated and still balanced is pretty good effect depending on what you are trying to express.

Deadline #2. HW #2. Emphasis - Basic Principles of Design - 0 views

    • Alex Portela

This is another website example of how emphasis on a focal point can be crucial. One statement here is that some designers will try to highlight everything in one visual. This will cause it to look too busy and may lose interest.
  •
This website provides a definition of emphasis as well as describes the importance of using emphasis in your design. It makes a good point by saying that if everything is equally emphasized then the design can look too busy. I like that the author of the webpage gives tips on how to include emphasis in designs.

The main concept in CH1 identifies the importance of the design process through various steps. This site specifies web site building application and how to make it simple for the average viewer.
  • REST In simple terms, REST is a set of principles for structuring a web application and RESTful refers to an application that follows those rules. Within a RESTful MVC application, controllers are limited to a standard set of actions to perform: Index—displays a list of items of a particular type Show—displays the details of a specific item New—displays a form for creating a new item Create—saves an item to the database using the data from New Edit—displays a form for editing an item Update—updates an item in the database using the data from Edit Destroy—removes an item from the database

It groups all the sections of WordPress and underneath those has tips to help that section. There was stuff that I didn't even know that would help improve the blog. However I'm not sure if we will get that in depth with our WordPress blog but nonetheless it's a good resource to look over.
  •
This site gives a vast amount of information on all the options that are included in WordPress.  For an amateur to blogging and WordPress in particular this gives great overview.
  •
This article was another good one I found. Even though there are so many options it discuess but it breaks down into sections depending on what you are looking to change for your wordpress. The chunks the author chose to break these tips into are navigation, Design, Performance, Security, SEO, and other. Each section consists of 5 or more specific tips that fit into that category.

They have a main bullet point to look at, and then list and shortly describe different aspects of that bullet point. Also, it covers just about every aspect from design, to performance, to even security. It has a lot of great information!

  • Users don’t read, they scan.
  • users search for some fixed points or anchors which would guide them through the content of the page
  • the less intuitive is the navigation, the more willing are users to leave the web-site and search for alternatives
  • the web-page should be obvious and self-explanatory
  • The only element which is directly visible to the users is the word “free”
    • anonymous

I agree and think that these are very good guidelines. You don't really think about them when you are reading different instructions, but when I look back it makes sense. I don;t really ever read anything untill it catches my eye and looks interesting. ONce I start reading if its to wordy or boring I stop reading, I don't to have to think to hard.

This website lists "10 Principles Of Effective Web Design" that I believe are very useful. The images and information about where the users eyes fall and how to strategically organize your page are all helpful in designing not only blogs but any web page. These tips are very effective because they view everything from the users' perspective, saying things such as "users follow their intuition" or "users want to have control." I think that the aspects mentioned are good to take into account when design a site.

This site is a good resource because it gives good examples and explanations as well as other great links to use as resources of balance.

This was my favorite site found in my search for related content to chapter 4 of basics of design, and on the topic of balance. This site explains how important balance is in webdesign and how it make make a site look "good" and give it something extra. It talks about the different types of balance; formal. informal, and radial, and how to include them on your site or page. Lastly it explains that looking at examples can be a real help in learning to use balance in your design.

Gives ways of balancing in web design. In order to balance the web page, you use contrasts in light (light versus dark), large designs versus smaller, and etcetera.

D# 2 HW# 2 Emphasis in Web Design - 2 views

This page goes over similar material covered in Chp 2 with an emphasis :) in webs design. Brief but interesting.
  •
Trying to make everything on a Web page stand out means that nothing will stand out. Good designers learn to use emphasis wisely so that the important parts of the layout dominate without overwhelming and there is a visual hierarchy that leads the reader through the Web page.

I thought this website exemplified what chapter one of Basics Of Design was talking about, in terms of keeping design simple and appealing to the correct audience. The business cards are simple but creative way to promote one's business in the specific field of work they are in. They are very aware of what audience they are trying to speak to.
