Design Notes: Balance Symmetry - 0 views

  • You have already had to balance between unity and variety, and in the last project balance figure and ground.
    • Delaney Hensley

Balance ties together a piece as a whole.
  • Different colors, shapes sizes, etc. create different degrees of interest. It is the distribution of this interest that you need to control.
    • Delaney Hensley

Color is important but you can also create good balance with black and white shades.
  • desirable characteristic of a composition
    • Delaney Hensley

A general element but a very important element that ties together all of the pieces.

  • it makes for "good" shape relationship. Many people automatically gravitate to symmetry.
    • Delaney Hensley

"Shape relationship" is a good thing to think about to give ideas of how to create balance.
  • same weight on both sides
    • Delaney Hensley

      Balance is all about weight
  • left to right balance, which is the most important aspect of balance. But there is more to balance than that. Top to bottom balance is also important. Most images seem more stable if the bottom seems slightly heavier. If the top seems too heavy the composition can look precarious.
    • Delaney Hensley

Balance is important in all directions
  • Fine artists rarely use pure symmetry for this reason. It is more applicable to commercial designs.
    • Delaney Hensley

things dont need to be exactly symetrical to be balanced
  • One of the four colors can be used as a border.
    • Delaney Hensley

      Good example
  • Move all of the parts of the composition around like you did for the ambiguous figure/ground project, trying different combinations, proportions and relationships before you are satisfied. Try taking pieces off.
    • Delaney Hensley

move things around to find a good balanced composition.
  • When you are satisfied with the composition, measure, mark and carefully glue the image together
    • Delaney Hensley

      follow the steps

Balance - Basic Principles of Design - 0 views

  • Balance is a visual interpretation of gravity in the design. Large, dense elements appear to be heavier while smaller elements appear to be lighter.
    • Delaney Hensley

This is explained in chapter four as the wieght of elements. Which is the main focus of balance.
  • Most Web pages are built on a grid system, and this creates a form of balance for the page right away.
    • Delaney Hensley

A grid is a good way to arrange parts of a whole in an equal way.
  • Centering is the easiest way to get a symmetrically balanced page.
    • Delaney Hensley

Centering the main focal point is important
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • To balance it asymmetrically, you might have a small element farther away from the centerline. If you think of your design as being on a teeter-totter or seesaw, a lighter element can balance a heavier one by being further away from the center of gravity.
    • Delaney Hensley

Light and dark are good ways to balance a page aswell as making things look closer or further. but mostly in art.
  • If the content of your design is also intended to be uncomfortable or make people think, a discordantly balanced design can work well.
    • Delaney Hensley

making something complicated and still balanced is pretty good effect depending on what you are trying to express.

D#3 HW#1 Contrast and Meaning - 0 views

  • your grasp of these fundamentals determines your ability to communicate effectively. Without fundamentals, you will flounder when faced with complex design challenges or constraints.
    • Delaney Hensley

some fundamentals being the tips they have given us in the readings so far.
  • These basics of creative communication are consistent across art forms: painting, music, dance, acting, poetry, design, and all other artistic endeavors. I divide them into two categories: vocabulary and grammar.
    • Delaney Hensley

Contrast as well as other fundamentals are not only used in one media of communication it is used in all kinds of communication.
  • nce, angular lines and forms are generally indicative of strength, speed, and masculinity, while rounded lines and forms are generally associated with softness, slower tempo, and femininity.
    • Delaney Hensley

Different lines and textures convey different ideas and feelings.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • Moreover, most of the rules of language have exceptions, and some creative modes of communication make little or no reference to rules. Every language is lent nuance, style and character by the way that each individual uses it, and there are exceptions for every grammatical rule.
    • Delaney Hensley

Using funamentals to convey important information is communicating and in a way is like its own language.
  • which are used to define hierarchy, manipulate certain widely understood relationships, and exploit context to enhance or redefine those relationships…all in an effort to convey meaning. Contrast is important because the meaningful essence of any thing is defined by its value, properties, or quality relative to something else. That’s right: nothing has much meaning by itself, which is one reason why design is important.
    • Delaney Hensley

expressing the important information in something is best shown when contrasted. The more a title stands out the more impact it is going to have on the viewer and the easier they will remember that name.
  • contrast is closely tied to human perception and survival instincts, as we’ll examine later, and this makes contrast a powerful and essential tool for designers.
    • Delaney Hensley

it is human insticnt to be drawn to bold information
  • Furthermore, each component is but a piece of the overall project message and objective. With creative uses of contrast, you can influence user choices and compel specific actions.
    • Delaney Hensley

each piece of finished product has its own role, it is important to distinguish that role and convey it appropriately.

The pictures have very good contrast with black, white, and red in one picture, and the white on the dark part of the shadows that says "Queen" in the other picture. All of them show good contrast in colors some more obvious than others.
  •
This magazine has a lot of really neat examples of contrast like the ones that were touched on in chapter three. There is a lot of black and white used in the pictures and light and dark shades. the titles of the names are in very contrasting colors such as red on black and white, or white on darker colors. This seems like a very cool magazine for artists and designers to look through.

The apple name is widely known because they make it known. they have a lot of contrast in theirr advertisements and their products are all very sharp designs because of the contrasting color.
  • . In Apple's case, Apple is the corporate brand with iPod being the individual brand. Some companies brand a service or a component of a product "Intel inside".
    • Delaney Hensley

companies have the name of their specific product on their packaging as well as the name of the company. the specific name is usually bigger and bolder. For example; apples IPod product has Ipod writen lard on the packaging. along with the apple symbol and the company name smaller.

  • intensity of expression that gives impressiveness or importance to something
    • Delaney Hensley

intesity is a good word to describe what is emphasized. in art usually your eye goes to one impressive point that is more important than others.
  • Certainly emphasis does not make a work appealing to everyone, but without a focal point or emphasis you may be looking at a big pot of stew
    • Delaney Hensley

this is an example of "limiting the amount of content" writing can become a big confusing "pot of stew" like art.
  • placing it in off center to the left or right and either above or below the center line adds to the interest of the piece by giving the viewer introductory or supporting information
    • Delaney Hensley

placement of focalpoints is important because a persons eye likes to flow across art and other medias.

these pictures all have main points that your eye goes to first because they are emphasized with color or images.
  • Value brings out the differences among a foreground that is in your face, a midground that may serve as the focal area or simply support, and a background that may be miles away
    • Delaney Hensley

things in the foreground are emphasized by being bigger and the things in the backround are secondary objects.
  • Your eye goes to the brightest colors, but also to designs on an angle
    • Delaney Hensley

bright colors are a good way to emphasize important things. The eye is attracted to bright colors the quickest.
  • You can use color, shape, line, texture, value, space, and or form in a way that distinguished one element or area from the whole to focus the viewer through the piece.
    • Delaney Hensley

many elements can help distinguish important words or images. having dark colors with light colors is a good way to create a contrast.

Garden Design -- The Role Of Emphasis Plants In Creating A Composition > Dry Climate Ga... - 0 views

  • unity, diversity, simplicity, balance, scale and emphasis. This article focuses on the last of these elements – emphasis.
    • Delaney Hensley

emphasis is important in all types of design including floral design.
  • It can be powerful, such as in the case of a strong contrast, or gentle and subtle, such as where a group of low growing grasses emerge from a mass of prostrate ground covers.
    • Delaney Hensley

longer grass or flowers that show over a field of short grass are the primary point in landscape because many gardeners create emphasis on flowers because they are different colors and pretty:)
  • An emphasis plant can differ in some of its characteristics such as size and shape from the rest of the plants in the group
    • Delaney Hensley

like in an advertisement some words or images are emphasized by their size, color, or shape as described in chapter two. These are different ways to emphasize plants or other important things.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • In fact the less attributes in which the emphasis plant is different, the stronger the contrast is likely to be.
    • Delaney Hensley

(like accents and contrasts) if all words (or plants) are emphasized then the important things could get lost and nothing will be emphasized, or stand out more.
  • While color contrast, whether created by flowers, fruit or foliage, is an obvious factor determining the emphasis potential of a particular plant, I’ll give a few examples of plants whose shape and form make them ideal candidates for this role
    • Delaney Hensley

colorful images can create emphasis, like colorful flowers.
  • This term includes real grasses, that is plants belonging to the family Poaceae, (Graminae) and plants from other botanical families that have a grass like habit.
    • Delaney Hensley

each plant has their own role in different cultures and create their own contrasts.
