Study reviews the studies of IV vitamin C and cancer.  The authors discuss the mechanism of action of the high dose vitamin C.  The authors are correct in their conclusion that a large body of evidence is lacking and that the majority are case study.  However, to even discount these in the face of the safety and the reduction in side effects associated with chemotherapy by IV vitamin C would be unacceptable. To delay recommendation due to a full lack of understanding would be unacceptable as well.   No deaths have been reported due to IV vitamin C.  Contrast this with chemotherapy.  However, case studies have pointed to IV vitamin C as a positive tool to attach cancer.  

Just the abstract available here.  Cancer is proving to be very complex--no surprise here.  Antioxidant therapy can actually promote cancer progression as can tumor suppressor genes.  The issue is context of the environment and the tumor in that environment.   Vitamin C is antioxidant in serum, but pro oxidant in the cancer cell.  The result is a production of H2O2 and lysis of the cell.

Mouse study finds that estrogen signaling slows insulin resistance in animals fed High fat diet.  This mechanism of signaling occurs through the ER alpha pathway.

Animal study finds that Bisphenol A exposure in utero has profound different effects in male offspring versus female offspring.  In the male offspring there appears to be an up regulation of the HPA axis.  The opposite appears true in the female off spring.  Additionally, the receptors are effected differently as well.

ED in type II diabetics with low Testosterone is almost a given.

Incidence of Low Testosterone very high in men with Diabetes in Iran.  This was the case whether Total Testosterone, calculated free Testosterone, calculated Biologic Testosterone, or SHBG was used.

Study finds that low Testosterone (43% of men) in early fractures is more of an effect of the stress associated with the event than low T itself.  The authors of this study point to additional evaluation delayed from event to provide additional support to the low T diagnosis and therapy.

24 week study of 71 women post-hysterectomy finds no increase in cardiovascular biomarkers.  Several problems with this study.  First, there was a large drop out--24%.  Second and most important, the women were pretreated with estrogen prior to Testosterone therapies were initiated.  Other studies have proposed that this protects cardiovascular risk in women on Testosterone.  Previous studies show increasing endogenous Testosterone is associated with increasing cardiovascular disease in women.   This study would be much better if no estradiol was prescribed.  That would give an unbiased view of Testosterone in post-hysterectomy women.  Not much can be taken from this study. If you doctor doesn't know this, find another doctor.  Inherent bias in this study as ties to the manufacturer of the Testosterone was disclosed. This study point to the inherent flaws in so much of the medical literature today.  Most would read the headlines and read no further, but the "further" dispels the headline as flawed.

Beta glucans have both an innate and adaptive effect to enhance the environment in/and around tumor.  Beta glucans stimulate the immune system signaling to attack tumors.

Beta-glucans stimulate NK cells through TH1 stimulation.  This provides the immune enhancing effect that attacks cancer cells.

Study finds that maitake mushroom extract, MD-Fraction (a beta-glucan), has significant anti-tumor activity and anti-metastasis activity through NK activity, Antigen presenting cells, and through suppression of ICAM-1.

This was an in vitro study of Maitake mushrooms and prostate cancer.  They found that the beta-glucan stimulated apoptosis of the cancer cells.  The study also found that vitamin C potentiated this kill effect.

The D-Fraction from maitake mushrooms enhanced the cytotoxicity from NK cells through IL-12 signaling.

Calprotectin is a useful biomarker in IBD.  Colorectal cancer and GI infection can also increase fecal Calprotectin.
