Testosterone and Visceral Fat in Midlife Women: The Study of Women's Health Across the ... - 0 views

  •
New study, SWAN study, finds that bioavailable Testosterone was "significantly positively related" to visceral fat.  As bioavailable Testosterone increases in post-menopausal women, visceral fat increases.  The authors conclude that Testosterone increases visceral fat accumulation.  This increased Testosterone is concluded to be from a decrease in SHBG as a result of falling Estradiol.

Meta-analysis of 27 studies finds hormone therapy reduces mortality in post-menopausal women < 60.  A more recent 2013 study from Yale supports this conclusion.  This study found a 28% reduction in mortality.

Review of data of Testosterone in post-menopausal women is seriously lacking--especially long-term safety data and this is worrisome as other data points to increased CVD and cancer with increasing Testosterone levels in women.

endogenous, not supplemented, estradiol positively correlated with inflammation, weight, insulin resistance, and increased homocysteine.  Likewise Testosterone positively correlated with increased weight, insulin resistance, yet negatively with HDL and SHBG.  This study looked at post-menopausal women.  The conclusion of this study was that endogenous estradiol and Testosterone are biomarkers for CVD risk.  If they are positively associated with an increased risk, then adding in extra E2 without opposition of Progesterone and Testosterone, then CVD risk is increased.

inflammation negatively associated with SHBG in post menopause women.  Interestingly, Estradiol was found to be positively associated.  The inflammatory cytokines evaluated were CRP and IL-6.

Birth control pills were found to reduce IGF-1 levels in the short term and long term.  Those that had used birth control pills had lower IGF-1 levels compared to those that had never used birth control pills.  This fits with the current knowledge that oral estrogen reduces HGH and IGF-1.  Those were in post-menopausal women, but this is in pre-menopaus women.  This has implications on health, weight, disease...

Only abstract available.  Meta-analysis of Testosterone therapy in post-menopausal women finds significant bias, some improvement in sexual function and cholesterol levels, yet safety and long-term data is significantly lacking.  Take this with studies on endogenous Testosterone in women, significant caution needs to be followed with Testosterone in women. Only abstract available here.

  • Although currently no drugs that specifically target mitochondrial biogenesis in HF are available, acceleration of this process through adenosine monophosphate–activated kinase (AMPK), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), and other pathways may represent a promising therapeutic approach
  • Mitochondrial biogenesis can be enhanced therapeutically with the use of adenosine monophosphate kinase (AMPK) agonists, stimulants of nitric oxide/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (NO/cGMP) pathway (including phosphodiesteraes type 5 inhibitors), or resveratrol
  • metformin, a commonly used antidiabetic drug that activates AMPK signaling
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • Recent evidence suggests that the eNOS/NO/cGMP pathway is an important activator of mitochondrial biogenesis
  • BH4 (tetrahydrobiopterin) supplementation can prevent eNOS uncoupling and was found to reduce left ventricular hypertrophy
  • folic acid is known to replenish reduced BH4 and has been shown to protect the heart through increased eNOS activity
  • Both folate deficiency and inhibition of BH4 synthesis were associated with reduced mitochondrial number and function
  • Resveratrol, a polyphenol compound responsible for the cardioprotective properties of red wine, was recently identified as a potent stimulator of mitochondrial biogenesis
  • epidemiological studies reveal a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease in premenopausal, but not post-menopausal, women compared with men
  • post-menopausal women

I would hypothesis that a change in the predominance of ER expression is one of ER beta to ER alpha: creating a more pro-inflammatory signal.
  • The majority of ROS in the heart appear to come from uncoupling of mitochondrial electron transport chain at the level of complexes I and III
  • Because the majority of ROS in HF comes from mitochondria, these organelles are the primary target of oxidative damage.
  • cardioprotective therapies such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and ATII receptor blockers were shown to possess antioxidant properties, although it is not known whether they target mitochondrial ROS directly or indirectly
  •

Neuroprotection of Sex Steroids - 0 views

great article on sex hormones and neuroprotection.  This article summarizes the research on estrogen, progesterone, and aromatase activity in in vitro and in vivo studies.  Additionally, the study reviews the androgenic neuroprotection in men.  Who has said that hormones are not needed post menopausal again?  Maybe, that is the sign that they need the neuroprotective effect of hormones.

Older men have Estradiol levels that are 3 x that of a post-menopausal women.  The bioavailable levels of Testosterone and Estradiol showed the greatest precipitous decline.
