Thanks for this article. I've suffered the consequences of filtering at our NPO. Due to unreliable internet reception, when I've needed to download OKMOOC lecture videos (from You tube) to watch offline, I haven't been able to access the video. Most frustrating! My IT colleagues have assisted me in overcoming this, but it all takes time.

In the classroom, the MOOC material became a new form of textbook. The students found the video lectures easy to follow. They could watch each bite-sized two- to seven-minute video in its entirety and retain the information. The finger exercises following the video further reinforced their learning.

I would love to see things changing - the universities could be much more effective if they would select their students by having passed Basic MOOC modules. This would reduce basic lecturing and focus on quality.

The 30th Chaos Communication Congress (30C3) is an annual four-day conference on technology, society and utopia. The Congress offers lectures and workshops and various events on a multitude of topics including (but not limited to) information technology and generally a critical-creative attitude towards technology and the discussion about the effects of technological advances on society.

With these resources, you can create or participate in collaborative efforts to develop tools and methods for online education.

Colleges and universities aren't just teaching businesses about the value of technology, they're leading by example. With it, universities are able to use low-cost computers and anything from high-end cameras to consumer webcams to record every lecture in every classroom across campus. Interesting lecture on citizen science given at UBC. Professor Jennifer Preece gives several interesting examples of recent citizen science projects, and the research being done on citizen science. She also presents some of the roles computer scientists and librarians can have in citizen science projects.

While not exactly on topic, and newspapers are not generally considered Scholarly publishers, they do engage with the public, and frequently act as a liaison between journals/researchers and the public. In the past ten years or so, people have gotten used to accessing, for free, newspapers and television reports as a way to inform themselves. While this is good for the individual, it is not so good for the publisher. Many traditional news outlets have been struggling to find a way to generate revenue in a way that neither smacks of consumerism, nor excludes the average citizen from participating. IN the UK, the liberal-leaning newspaper The Guardian has begun selling 'memberships', and hosting events ranging from lectures to classes on things as diverse as photography and creative writing.
