    A band director friend of mine told me about this site last summer.  There is a password, which is:  Grainger The Band Director Posthaven began with the Band Director Facebook page and the originator of the page, Brian Wis, wanted a place to share files with other band directors. This is a great resource in which band directors share files and other resources to assist the daily needs of a band director.  These files include posters, music (warm-ups, chorales, technique builders, curriculum guides, recruit tools and ideas, rubrics, music appreciation activities, band room rule/policies, how to deal with administrators, and more).  With the resources being submitted by band directors, this is a great source for new band directors and band directors at new schools.   I have used this site to find pitch tendency charts, scale sheets, and three excellent warm-ups.  You can spend hours upon hours searching this site.  Most of the files are PDFs which allows to open and print form any computer with a PDF reader.  There are some Microsoft Office documents which can be a problem.  Be mindful that some of the music repertoire may needs some adjustments for your ensembles needs or you have to add instruments to the instrumentation (missing Baritone TC, Oboe, Bassoon, or Baritone Sax parts)

The band I had one year was unprepared to play most Grade 4 Literature and I needed help choosing Grade 2 or 3 pieces. Wynn created this list of compositions that are on the GMEA LGPE required list. It is important to double check the most current LGPE list as the list is updated yearly. The compositions are written by composers whose works have been deemed to be "Contemporary Concert Band Standards" as they have the best mix of challenging the students as well as entertaining. Some of the composers include James Swearingen, Quincy Hilliard Robert W. Smith, David R. Holsinger, and James Curnow just to name a few. The site has changed a lot since I originally found it. You were able to click on the individual compositions to get more information about the piece such as key signature, meter, performance ranges for most of the instruments, technical issues that may occur (difficult rhythms or harmonies), background on the composer and historical perspective of the composition. Since the site's links do not work anymore, WynnLiterature is a great starting point to search for literature to play at the middle school level as well as the lower/developmental bands in high school.

The game I found which I liked in particular is called "Beethoven's Baseball". You get to pick your composer team, and then click on Beethoven to throw the "pitches", which are questions. The game keeps your score and is interactive. The website also has a "listen by composer" section, as well as other instructions for activities including making your own instrument.

    Hookpad is an interesting piece of software. While it does involve digital notation, it focuses more on notating chords and chord progressions and does so by providing the user options to use standard and non-standard notation. I love using Hookpad when my students are doing songwriting on the ukulele. It is easy for them to play the chords on the ukulele, then input them into Hookpad by selecting the chord symbols. They can then go in an add melodies as well.

You also have the ability to narrow your search down by grade level which makes it very easy when planning your program.

When searching for music, it will bring up all available arrangements, as well as show the grade level of the work (with the exception of older, out-of-print music). There are also links and articles for other music resources.

    J.W. Pepper is the easiest site I've used when choosing and purchasing sheet music. It is very helpful that most of the pieces allow you to hear a performance of the music you want to buy and you are able to see the scores for the pieces, this has helped me determine if my groups can play the piece before I buy it. I can see if the range is too high for trumpets, if there are a lot of string crossings for violins, etc.

    J.W. Pepper is a website to access many types of music scores. Creating an account is very easy, and there is no annual fee. I find many pieces that work for my all my varying ability ensembles through this site because it offers various arrangements of the same work. I can sometimes find a piece in SATB and 2-part. Prices of music keep rising, but they have great customer service and shipping is usually quick. Many selections on the website are accompanied by a recording of the piece, but not always in the voicing selected.

  • A very good song for teaching both Dos is The Balloon Song, which can be sung with real balloons and is always very popular!

  • Fixed Do ( used in a lot of the European countries ) where they actually use the sol-fa note names to identify notes rather than letter names (C-D-E etc.)  So this means the note names remain the same regardless of the key that is being played.

      An old professor told me fixed Do was helpful for producing musicians with perfect pitch, however that is not my goal when teaching solfege.
  • Movable Do  where Do is always the tonic. For example, in C major, C is do; in D major, D is do; in E-flat minor, E-flat is do, and so on. And the sol-fa syllables always stay the same when going from one key to the next regardless if there are sharps or flats.

      Moveable Do is helpful for sight-reading and pitch relation within scales.
  • The moveable method gets too complex for younger children, so I tend to use the fixed Do method, but just wanted to clarify the difference here.

Songs can be searched and categorized by: Origin, region, state, subject, song type, grade level, tonal center, scale, tone set, melodic range, melodic element, melodic motive, rhythmic element, meter, form, formal analysis and game type. Once you find a song you can see all of this detailed information as well as (in most cases) listen to the song, often sung by a child or group of children.

    This is a fun listening game in the form of Tetris. This game is designed to enhance the audiation skills in students by helping them identify instruments based on their unique sounds. There are three levels of difficulty for students to play. Each instrument that descends is accompanied by its innate musical sound. In the first level, students must match instruments according to their family. In the second level, students must match instruments with identical instruments. On the third level, the most challenging level, students must match instruments with identical instruments, but the icon of each instrument is blacked out. In other words, students must rely solely on their ears to hear and categorize each instrument's unique sound.
