It works best if you think of something that most people wouldn't be able to guess so easily. The author of this article, Tara Thomas, summarizes the top five technologies for event planners. The first technology that she mentions is smart phones. She writes that this is the most obvious technology that event planners can't live without. Planners can do things like set alarms, look up information, communicate instantly, and use social media to promote the event. The second technology that Thomas mentions is SaaS cloud applications. Software as a service allows planners to access all details and execution aspects of an event from any web enabled device, eliminating printed or emailed reports. Thirdly, Thomas talks about virtual events. Virtual events save the planner and the attendee valuable time, money, and resources. Thomas next talks about social media and viral marketing. Using sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to share event details is a great way to communicate to a very large group of people. The fifth and last technology that Thomas speaks of is Ipads and tablets. Through event management applications, planners have all of the information they could possibly need right at their fingertips. Ipads and tablets also make it possible to communicate in real time if needed.

I think this is a great article. I am a Marketing Manager but do events at my restaurant as well and even for me I need my smart phone at all times to look up stuff in emails or even have a remote log-in to my computer to check a contract if needed. Event planners really do need all of these technologies at all times and people may view it as rude to be on your phone at all times but in reality they are just doing their jobs to make your life easier and less complex.

"5 technologies event planners can't live without" was a unique read. The article begins with the number one technology the author designates as not being able to live without which are smartphones. Event planners are constantly in need to update their events, use the latest applications, set alarms for all events , look up phones number instantly by vendor and so on. What is then questioned is the systems in place before smartphones were introduced. Number two on the list is SaaS cloudapps better known as software as a service applications that are vastly on the rise. SaaS cloudapps enable meeting planners to access details and other aspects of events from any web device such as a smart phone or ipad. This is also valid with the ability to link event management systems to customer relationship management systems (CRM).Number three is Virtual events. The article presents many positives in hosting "webinars or live events" that include saving time, money and available resources. The meeting planner can fill "seats" easier and measure improvement for future events. Number four is social media and viral marketing. This is a major deal for event planners because not only they have the ability to market their events but attendees market for them: before, during and after. The article presents statistics about twitter, facebook and linkedin which support why social media and viral marketing are keys to success for event planners. Last but not least, listed as number five are Ipads and tablets. These devices simply allow event planners to have a bundle of information at their fingertips. In summary, event planners are constantly on the go and will always strive for perfection even during crunch time. Technology enhancements have allowed event planners to become more efficient and better resources for their clients.

This article list five technologies event planners cannot live without, including the smartphones, SaaS Cloud Apps, virtual events, social media and viral marketing, and iPads and tablets. With more and more people adopting smartphones, ipads and tablets, event planners should look into purchasing a mobile event app for their attendees to use at their event. This not only reduces paper waste, it also reduces the high costs involved in printing event guides and brochures for the event. It is essentially a virtual event guide that's available in the palm of the attendee's hands.

REPORT: STATE OF HOTEL INDUSTRY SIX MONTHS INTO COVID PANDEMIC | AHLA - 0 views

  • The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) today released an analysis on the economic and human struggle  of the hotel industry six months into the COVID-19 pandemic, with millions of employees still furloughed or laid off and travel demand lagging far behind normal levels.
  • Key findings of the report include: Four out of 10 hotel employees are still not working. Almost two-thirds (65%) of hotels remain at or below 50 percent occupancy, which is below the threshold at which most hotels can break even and pay debt. Consumer travel remains at all-time low, with only 33 percent of Americans reporting they have traveled overnight for leisure or vacation since March and just 38 percent saying they are likely to travel by the end of the year. Urban hotels are suffering the most and facing collapse with cripplingly low occupancies of 38 percent, significantly below the national average. COVID-19 has left hotels in major cities across the country struggling to stay in business, resulting in massive job loss and dramatically reducing state and local tax revenue for 2020 and beyond.
  • “While hotels have seen an uptick in demand during the summer compared to where we were in April, occupancy rates are nowhere near where they were a year ago. Thousands of hotels can’t afford to pay their mortgages and are facing the possibility of foreclosure and closing their doors permanently,” said Rogers.

  • As a result of the sharp and sustained drop in travel demand, industry leaders say hotels are now facing the harsh reality of deciding whether to close their doors permanently.

Technology In The Front, Nothing In The Back? | By Kristin Carville - Hospitality Net - 0 views

  • In some cases, the reason is that hotels are unaware of the various technology available that can assist them in these areas. In other cases, it's because the attitude towards spending money and/or time on technology is still rather reserved.
  • However, these programs allow staff - from management to the room attendants - to know exactly what is happening in the hotel right at that exact moment, which is of vital importance.
  • The great news is that there are already technology solutions out there readily available to do these actions for hotels.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • Visualize supervisors finding out that a room is ready to be inspected the moment the housekeeper has finished cleaning it. Imagine being able to know exactly how long a housekeeper took to clean a room and whether the quality of work meets the hotel's standards. Perhaps, you want to be able to know exactly who is fulfilling a guest request when it comes in, and the status of progress? Or you want to find a guest's bags without having to visit all 5 rooms that are being used for storage? Or maybe you want to be able to track how your preventive maintenance is going.
  • One of the other great challenges that these programs can address is the collection of data, and the ability to produce factual reports on areas that have historically been based purely on anecdotal evidence. Whereas before, there would be rough estimates on how long each room would take to be cleaned, this information is now collected from the software and can be tabulated and reported however the hotel needs it. It also eliminates the need to go trawling back through overflowing filing cabinets to find out the frequency and cost of previous repairs - everything is now all collated together and much more easily accessible.
  • These days with the use of apps, barcodes, and QR codes, a simple luggage tag can be a valuable way to be able to record exactly where an item is and how it has moved around the hotel from storeroom to guest room
  • how hotels can deliver these experiences is changing, and hotels must move with the times and arm themselves with the tools of today to deliver this
  •
Many hotels are stuck with old ways of doing things such as giving housekeepers lists of rooms to clean on paper. Many of the essential functions of hotels such as housekeeping, keeping track of guest requests, and preventative maintenance have different apps or software that can be used to keep track of all of that information. Hotels generally are not the first to implement new technology that is available. If hotels did implement technology that is currently available or in development, many jobs in the hotel can be completed faster by utilizing the technology.

This article discusses the role and benefits of cloud-based event management software in planning and executing events. Software enables event managers to improve workflow, manage venues, and track various types of information in a timely and consistent manner. Software is especially useful in monitoring the progress of ticket sales and invitations, where event organizers can follow up on attendees that did not respond yet. It also helps prevent ticket duplication and enhances security by sending tickets with unique codes to attendees' e-mails. Event management software can also be integrated with social media platforms which boosts the promotion and the visibility of a given event and its ultimate success. Financially, such software leads to cost savings because it does not require investment in infrastructure. From operational standpoint, cloud-based software offers real-time, remote access and fest error resolution. This article helps me better understand improvements in operations that cloud-based software system brings in event management. I am also able to explore the vast field of using software technology. Before reading this article, I was not aware of the benefits of the cloud-based software system in event management. Now, I gained a better knowledge about advantages like accuracy of data for large events, to real-time tracking needs to manage ticket sales and event attendance, and permanent connection and access to various files and records. Such access is vital when an event manager is in charge of multiple events that are at different stages of preparation: some may be in planning stage and others may be in execution stage. The ability to fix errors quickly is a major benefit for event planners that are small businesses. For this reason, an individual wedding planner will probably have peace of mind by using such software.

  • The use of paper checks immensely increases a company’s exposure to payment fraud. In addition, manually processing checks is both costly and time consuming for business owners, accounting departments and vendors alike.
  • EAP is the most advanced and rapidly growing method of electronic payments in the U.S.
  • With EAP, a company’s payable process remains the same up to the point of printing the checks. Instead of hitting “print” to run off checks, accounting creates a digital batch file which is sent or linked to the bank.

  • In addition to reducing check fraud, enhancing cash flow and increasing revenue, the EAP/P-Card method is a simple, secure and seamless way of migrating away from manual accounts payable processes.

Ditching direct: It may be time to reconsider your GDS and OTA connections | PhocusWire - 1 views

  • Interactive television, the internet and the rise of online travel, suppliers push for direct business, direct connects, alternate accommodations, among other have all driven the market to predict the demise of the GDS.

  • As it turns, out the cost and effort of maintaining a direct connect to the GDS may have been more than hotels had bargained for.
  • Look-to-book ratios are skyrocketing
  • Travelers are said to visit 38 websites before making a choice, but a traveler coming to your brand.com likely know what they want and often make the booking right there because of brand loyalty or previous rate comparisons on 3rd party websites.
  • look-to-book ratios can exceed 25,000:1 on these indirect channels.
  • First, creating the infrastructure that can handle this traffic is not easy or cheap. Second, unless you have advanced cache functionality, all that traffic hit your CRS which can fail to meet the demand at peak traffic times.
  • Lost bookings and another hidden cost of your direct connect.
  • In 2017, GDS hotel reservations exceeded 68 million, a two million increase over the previous year,
  • the industry is still managing around amenity fields with character limitations where there’s just no room to fully describe that amenity, e.g., “GYM” vs. “Spacious recreation facility with state-of-the-art work out equipment.”
  • limitations mean that you need to be able to normalize and standardize the field values in order to successfully distribute.
  • it’s a labor-intensive and never-ending task without powerful and specialized software at your disposal.
  • never-ending task of monitoring and making sure your content is used as you intended it and is consistent across both GDS and other channels.
  • without consistency and the right change management processes, your personalization is likely to fail.
  • If you’re going to maintain a direct connect, knowing how it performs is critical to its success.
  • It is simply that, as always, the world evolves. With this evolution, we are seeing a renewed interest in technology provider approaches, as opposed to DIY.
  • there are many drivers behind this:  the realization of the costs and complexity of connectivity, the growth in shopping volumes, the requirements of personalization and the data necessary to manage that, and the desire of hotels to focus on what they do best.
  • Interactive television, the internet and the rise of online travel, suppliers push for direct business, direct connects, alternate accommodations, among other have all driven the market to predict the demise of the GDS.Yet, the GDS remains, and bookings are growing.
  •
GDS systems have been helping customers book hotel rooms, flights, and vacation packages for nearly two decades. This increases the convenience factor for the customer. Companies may be paying more to maintain a direct connection and may want to start reconsidering utilizing a GDS system. GDS systems do have limiting qualities such as character limitations within text fields, which can lead to unforeseen issues for companies looking to personalize filed values. Even though this issue may provide limitations for companies, the cost of maintaining connectivity, increased shopping volumes, and personalization issues are driving companies to ditch direct.

  • In this post, we will look at some of the outdated hotel management practices that make up a perfect recipe for disaster.
  • #1 – Manually handling operations
  • Manually handling operations is prone to errors, errors that can cost your hotel dearly. Your staff will have to keep doing mundane and unproductive jobs that don’t add any value. Plus, they will get no or little time to attend to your guests’ needs with a personal touch.
  • This is because most of the third-party solutions today are on the cloud and their integration with a server-based Hotel PMS will never be seamless oreasy. It would be a forced integration leading inconsistent data flow between them.
  • With such a flawed practice in place, you won’t be able to efficiently maintain records of your hotel business. You will be forced to sift through numerous files and pages to locate a single piece of information. It would not help you understand how your business fared over Christmas season last year, making it impossible to take measures to do better this season. Yes, we are talking about ‘Data’ here. Today, no hotel business can survive without having timely access to guest data and operational data.
  • #3 – Using an outdated server-based Hotel Property Management System
  • An on-premise system is expensive, you need to have dedicated servers and IT team to manage it.
  • software upgrades. Thus, your cost of software ownership will go up.
  • PMSs are quite high and you also need to spend extra to get your staff trained on the same.
  • #2 – Manual methods of record-keeping
  • Not only that, you can’t view your business data and hotel position from outside your office as you can’t access the Hotel PMS once you are out of your property. Plus, these Hotel PMSs are not mobile optimized.

Why the U.S. is Terrible at Recycling Electronics | Digital Trends - 0 views

  • E-waste in the United States is out of control.
  • You may assume America has to at least be on par with the rest of the first world when finding a forever home for computers, phones, and printers, but you’d be wrong.
  • Those millions of old motherboards and TVs consoles rotting in landfills and warehouses aren’t just eyesores. They amount to a massive health hazard. While electronics waste comprises only 2-3 percent of America’s solid waste stream, the lead, cadmium, chromium, and other materials in aging circuitry account for 70 percent of the hazardous material in landfills, according to an EPA report.
  • ...31 more annotations...
  • Others go belly up, leaving behind millions of pounds of old gadgets piled in mountainous heaps atop land which has lead levels many times normal.
  • You’re probably not screaming into a paper bag about the $20 billion or so of gold that’s trashed in electronics every year worldwide. Precious metals come and go. But if you care about the soil that comprises the land of the brave, you should start thinking about what happened to last year’s smartphone (even if it’s just sitting in the garage).
  • This list of reasons isn’t exhaustive, but serves as a solid starting point for understanding the United States’ e-waste dilemma and what can be done.
  • U.S. e-waste recycling laws are often outdated or nonexistent
  • Only 25 states (plus Washington, D.C.) have legislation that addresses e-waste recycling. The other 25 don’t have comprehensive programs, and don’t report what happens to the electronics beyond occasional voluntary numbers, says Jason Linnell, head of the National Center for Electronics Recycling (NCER). Federal laws don’t explicitly address e-waste recycling.
  • The U.S. isn’t good at recycling
  • The current level and effectiveness of e-waste recycling depends on which state you live in and whether or not you trust locals to “do the right thing.” The hope for improvement sits with congressional reps, state lawmakers, manufacturers, and gadget freaks (yes, you).
  • Single-stream recycling hasn’t helped
  • Between 2005 and 2014, single stream recycling programs increased from 29 to 80 percent in American towns and cities. During that same time period, material contamination rates increased from 7 to 25 percent.
  • E-waste legislation regularly disappears in Congress
  • This is not the first Congressional session in which similar bills have been introduced and allowed to die like a first grade classroom goldfish on summer break. SEERA currently sits with the house’s Foreign Affairs Committee. Why is it so tough to pass e-waste legislation?
  • The U.S. is an environmental rogue
  • As of late 2018, 186 states and the European Union have ratified it and follow its legal framework. The United States has signed the Basel Convention, indicating an intent to ratify, but is the only developed nation that hasn’t actually done so, which
  • After the initial Basel Convention was adopted in 1989, many organizations said the treaty didn’t do enough to address the disposal of waste from first world countries into the developing world, and pressed for an update, which eventually became 1995’s Basel Ban Amendment. The tweak — which was attacked by many industrial powers, including the U.S., Canada, and Japan — needed three decades before it was accepted by enough countries to go into effect. In August 2019, Croatia became the 97th country to ratify it, which transformed the updated stipulations into international law in December 2019.
  • EPA regulations are incomplete
  • Federal attempts at regulation have stalled, been killed
  • U.S. pushes back against international efforts
  • As a part of the 2003 Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive), the public was guaranteed free recycling services, and conveniently located collection centers. Around the same time, the EU also passed the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS), aka the “lead-free directive,” which restricts the use of several toxic materials in the manufacture of circuitry and electronic products.
  • In Japan, the Association for Electric Home Appliances requires consumers to help pay for the processing of their goods and manufacturers to set up recycling programs. Electronics recycling has been promoted as such a point of national pride — because Japan is both a huge consumer of gadgets and the country has few indigenous precious metals — that there’s serious talk of making the 2020 Tokyo Olympic metals out of recycled materials. An estimated 80,000 cell phones need to be pulled apart and picked over to complete the plan.
  • State-level e-cycling programs are uneven
  • Certified e-cycling programs are important, but also confusing
  • If you’re the compliance officer who has to make sure the company’s used servers don’t wind up getting tossed in an Indonesian landfill, and you won’t have to nervously answer questions in a “60 Minutes” exposé, you probably want to get that e-waste removed by a disposal team with one of these
  • That all sounds great until you listen to Puckett, who helped create the e-Stewards protocols. He’s one of several people who took part in the development of R2 for over two years and then refused to continue when the proposed guidelines seemed to be too tainted by lobbyists, including ones at the Institute of Scrap Recycling (ISRI), an organization that favors a free market approach over regulation. Puckett and 13 recyclers created e-Stewards, which describes itself as the “the cleanest, most globally responsible standard for e-waste recycling.” He points out that the R2 certification still allows recyclers to export to developing countries. E-Stewards’ doesn’t. R2 recyclers can drop toxic e-waste in landfills or incinerators in the event of “circumstances beyond their
  • Scrap recycling lobby doesn’t like regulations
  • The announcer proudly explains e-cycling is a vibrant industry that adds 20.6 billion to the U.S. economy and supports 45,000 jobs domestically, “safeguarding our environment,” along the way.
  • Can anything be done? Possibly
  • Recycling isn’t the only answer for fewer landfills filled with decaying circuits. Chris Wellise, Chief Sustainability Officer for Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), which installs and recovers tech, emphasizes the importance of designing products for longevity, disassembly, and reuse.
  • “On average, 85 percent of the environmental impacts can be addressed in the design phase,” estimates Wellise.
  • Similar challenges exist for smartphones. Review IFixit’s guide for repairability and you can expect the phones that are easy to disassemble are also easier to refurbish or scrap. In an unusual display of transparency, eco-minded electronics company Fairphone sells spare parts on its site and has visual cues printed on the pieces to help novices figure out where everything goes. In case you’re wondering, it’s possible to make a Fairphone work in America, but most of the company’s sales are in Europe.
  • In 2018, Apple gave birth to Daisy, a robot that can disassemble 200 of the company’s phones in an hour — 1.2 million a year. The company has an installation of the machine in Austin, Texas, and another in the Netherlands. Daisy’s supply chain of used products comes from the company’s in-store trade-in program and a partnership with Best Buy.
  • Pretty awe-inspiring, right? Keep in mind that Apple sold over 217 million phones just in 2018 and has moved 2.2 billion iPhone units since the product line launched in 2007. The two Daisy divisions aren’t even working at capacity. Apple is willing to license the robot technology so any company can use it to disassemble phones, but none have approached them yet.

7 Steps to Securing Your Point-of-Sale System | PCMag - 0 views

  • Consider how the Target store hack in 2014 was one of the biggest point-of-sale (POS) system data breaches in United States history that exposed more than 70 million customer records to hackers, and cost the retailer's CEO and CIO their jobs. It was later revealed that the attack could have been avoided if Target had just implemented the auto-eradication feature within its FireEye anti-malware system.
  • the reality is that most POS attacks can be avoided.
  • be sure your company has a virtual private

  • network (VPN) in place to safeguard data that's traveling back and forth on your company's
  • network.
  • Most of the aforementioned attacks have been the result of malware applications loaded into
  • the POS system's memory.
  • important point to note here is that a second app must be running (in addition to the POS app),
  • This is why iOS has traditionally facilitated fewer attacks. Because iOS is only able to fully run one app at a time, these types of attacks rarely occur on Apple-made devices.
  • otherwise the attack can't occur.
  • Companies such as Verifone offer software that's designed to guarantee your customer's data is
  • never exposed to hackers.
  • These tools encrypt credit card information the second it's received on the POS device and once again when it's sent to the software's server. This means that the data is never vulnerable, regardless of where hackers might be installing malware.
  • install endpoint protection software on your device.
  • Employees can steal devices with POS software installed on them, or accidentally leave the device at the office or in a store, or lose the device. If devices are lost or stolen, anyone who then accesses the device and the software (especially if you didn't follow rule #2 above) will be able to view and steal customer records.
  • Systems that connect
  • to external networks are more susceptible to attacks from hackers
  • Consider keeping things internal and secure, use a corporate network to handle critical tasks like payment processing.
  • you'll want to comply with the Payment Card
  • Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) across all card readers, networks, routers, servers, online shopping carts, and even paper files. The PCI Security Standards Council suggests companies actively monitor and take inventory of IT assets and business processes in order to
  • detect any vulnerability.
  •
Even though this article is from 2019 it is still extremely relevant today. POS systems are found in most hospitality outlets and the chances for a security breach are high. I have often thought when I had my credit card to a waiter and they are gone for 10 minutes are they copying the number, is it being added to a database that can then be hacked? The importance of having the proper securities in place, the proper malware and security software is really important. Having had a catering company for 20 years I had to do PCI compliance tests every 6 months and for years I just handed it over to my IT to do the test. He would suggest things to make us safer and since it usually cost money I would shake it off. It wasnt until the credit card processing company i was using had a security breach that I realized how important these PCI rules were. It is something going forward I will always pay attention to!

How 9/11 changed air travel: more security, less privacy - 0 views

  • The worst terror attack on American soil led to increased and sometimes tension-filled security measures in airports across the world, aimed at preventing a repeat of that awful day.
  • The cataclysm has also contributed to other changes large and small that have reshaped the airline industry — and, for consumers, made air travel more stressful than ever.
  • Transportation Security Administration, a force of federal airport screeners that replaced the private companies that airlines were hiring to handle security.

  • The law required that all checked bags be screened, cockpit doors be reinforced, and more federal air marshals be put on flights.
  • Things that clearly could be wielded as weapons, like the box-cutters used by the 9/11 hijackers, were banned. After “shoe bomber” Richard Reid’s attempt to take down a flight from Paris to Miami in late 2001, footwear started coming off at security checkpoints.
  • Clear, which recently went public, plans to use PreCheck enrollment to boost membership in its own identity-verification product by bundling the two offerings
  • The long lines created by post-attack measures gave rise to the PreCheck and Global Entry “trusted-traveler programs” in which people who pay a fee and provide certain information about themselves pass through checkpoints without removing shoes and jackets or taking laptops out of their bag.
  • , PreCheck asks people about basic information like work history and where they have lived, and they give a fingerprint and agree to a criminal-records check.
  • Privacy advocates are particularly concerned about ideas that TSA has floated to also examine social media postings (the agency’s top official says that has been dropped), press reports about people, location data and information from data brokers including how applicants spend their money.
  • Each new requirement seemed to make checkpoint lines longer, forcing passengers to arrive at the airport earlier if they wanted to make their flights.
  • The TSA is testing the use of kiosks equipped with facial-recognition technology to check photo IDs and boarding passes rather than having an officer do it.
  • co
  • “TSA is an effective deterrent against most attacks,”
  • This summer, an average of nearly 2 million people per day have flowed through TSA checkpoints.
  • “They are there for my security. They aren’t there to hassle me,” Gathings said of TSA screeners and airport police.
  • Those incidents highlight a threat that TSA needs to worry about — people who work for airlines or airports and have security clearance that lets them avoid regular screening.
  • “All those folks that have a (security) badge, you’re right, many do have unescorted access throughout an airport, but they also go through a very rigorous vetting process before they are even hired,”
  •
After the terrorist attacks of 9/11 was when the TSA was created. Ever since this point in history security in airport sis a lot stricter and requires certain documentation to travel. Lines are longer, leaving travelers to arrive for their flights earlier. Overall, 9/11 heavily impacted the security world we live in today.
